The article studies the plot of the story of E.G. Swain “Indian Lampshade” in accordance with the four-phase model of the plot development of the literary text. Consistently distinguished four phases. Phase of isolation including a detailed description of the hero — priest Batchel in accordance with his value orientation and lifestyle. The partnership phase — the priest’s meeting with the evening guest and ghosts, which alternately appear in the mirror image as well as the situation of trying a new life behavior, which turns into a series of mystical trials for the hero. The phase of the encounter with death including the spectacle of death, the detection of objects that are evidence of a fatal crime as well as the behavior of the priest in the light of unraveling the secrets of the crime, which is very important for revealing the image of the protagonist and anticipating the final phase of the transformation of the hero in a new quality of life that takes place, first of all, psychologically. Analysis of the work of the English writer E.G. Swain on the basis of classic plot schemes allows us to confirm the thesis that the genre of the Gothic story arises on the basis of already mastered material and represents “the condensation of large forms”, in this case the Gothic novel.

Background: Hemochromatosis is a genetic condition of iron overload caused by deficiency of hepcidin. In a previous stage of this study, patients with suspected hemochromatosis had their quality of life (QL) measured. We observed that QL scores differed among genotypic groups of patients. In this reported final phase of the study, the aims were to compare QL scores after a treatment period of approximately 3 years and to analyze a possible association of the serum ferritin values with QL scores. Methods: Sixty-five patients were enrolled in this final phase and divided into group 1 (patients that showed primary iron overload and homozygous genotype for the HFE p.Cys282Tyr mutation) and group 2 (other kinds of genotypes). Short Form 36 (SF-36) was performed and consisted of eight domains with a physical and also a mental component. Results: Both groups had a significant decrease in serum ferritin concentrations: group 1 had a variation from 1844 ± 1313 ng/mL to 281 ± 294 ng/mL, and group 2 had a variation from 1216 ± 631 ng/mL to 236 ± 174 ng/mL. Group 1 had a smaller mean value for these six SF-36 domains compared with group 2, indicating a worse QL. Conclusions: In this final stage, six domains demonstrated a difference among genotypic groups (role emotional and mental health, adding to the four of the initial phase), reassuring the impact of the identified genotype on the QL of hemochromatosis patients. Furthermore, despite that both patient groups demonstrated similar and significant decreases in serum ferritin values, no association was found between the decrease in this biological parameter and the SF-36 domains.

Reports from abroad on the American condition have a special place in the canon of social commentary. There is Lord Bryce's American Commonwealth (1888), Gunnar Myrdal's American Dilemma: The Negro Problem and Modern Democracy (1944), Werner Sombart's Why Is There No Socialism in the United States? (1906) and, of course—the standard setter—Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America in 1835. What makes these works touchstones is not just the quality of the analysis or the fame of their authors but the privileged status they have come to enjoy as works of external reflection and criticism. For a people prone to ignore the rest of the world or see abroad only a mirror image of themselves, Americans have always had a surprisingly soft spot for the foreign observer willing to discourse on what makes their nation unique.

AbstractIntroduction: Every person needs to define their own parameters of values and quality of life as there is a range of life circumstances and objective or subjective factors which force individuals to make decisions and select from available solutions depending on their personalities and other determinants. Currently, these notions have been broadly discussed and the authors of the presented study believe, that in the context of value orientation and life quality, there are new interactions, correlations and new truth to be revealed. Methods: The presented research aimed to find out about the respondents’ perception of their quality of life and value orientation using WHOQOLBREF 1996 questionnaire and Vonkomer’s HO-PO-MO questionnaire and unrevealing the relations between them. The research sample consisted of 300 in their middle-adulthood involved in external university study programs. Results: The results presented in this study indicate that from the aspect of the subjective perception of the quality of life by individuals, external factors such as age or place of residence are not decisive. The most important finding of the research is that, as well as value orientation focusing on the values of knowledge, education and economic aspects leads to a better quality of life; a better quality of life is determined by a value orientation focused on the fields of knowledge, education and economic values.Discussion: The attention of professionals from various fields of science and their research activities is given mostly to the relatively small population of young generation, the process of the creation of their value orientation and thus, their subjective quality of life. The presented study is focused on productive generation of middle-aged adults involved in tertiary education, which has experienced several massive changes in the society and received primary and secondary education in an educational context different from the present situation.Limitations: The conducted research into the respondents’ quality of life is limited by the applied methods as it focuses on four basic areas of quality of life and quantitative methods are used. The advantages of this approach lie in exactly defined fields and quantitative data which enable comparison. One of its shortcomings is that it does not find out anything about the qualitative, dynamic aspects of the respondents’ reflections about their own quality of life. Conclusion: The findings show that quality of mental life correlates with educational value orientation as well as quality of social relationships with social value orientation. It can be stated that, as well as value orientation focusing on the values of knowledge, education and economic aspects leads to a better quality of life; a better quality of life is determined by a value orientation focused on the fields of knowledge, education and economic values.

Research contains data analysis obtained through two questionnaires – questionnaire WHOQOL-BREF 1996 about quality of life and a questionnaire for the detection of value orientation, attitude to the values and motivation to achievements (Values-Attitudes-Motiovation). According to obtained data statistic analysis of perceived quality of life by the respondents in general didn't significantly prove any differences between the arithmetic averages of individual groups and areas. None of the factors of value orientation shows negative data correlation with the factors of quality of life. By contrast, positive data correlation appeared in the evaluation of physical quality of life, mental quality of life, or in perception of social quality of life. Total score of quality of life shows positive correlation with educational and economic value orientation. Important findings are that respondents who subjectively see their quality of life as high have their values oriented towards educational and economic area. Since the correlation calculations do not show the direction of this relation, a reverse interpretation is also possible - the respondents with value oriented towards education, knowledge and economical relations, experiencea higher quality of their lives.

Therapeutic futility in intensive care units (ICUs) is still little discussed among nursing professionals responsible for implementing prescribed procedures, which they might disagree on. Therefore, interviews were carried out with ICU nurses to understand how they are coping with the implementation of futile treatments. Based on the analysis of collected data, the following categories emerged: Therapeutic futility: what is it?; Therapeutic futility extends suffering; Therapeutic futility with healing as a priority; Coping with therapeutic futility: humanized care? The study indicates the need to evaluate therapeutic measures provided to terminal patients with a view to improving their quality of life in this final phase. When healing is no longer possible, care is necessary with a view to respecting the sick person's integrity because care is the essence of the nursing profession.
