The high pressures on Pterocarpus erinaceus Poir. severely affect its natural stands in West Africa. The measures taken to reverse this trend are still inefficient due to plantlets production constraints. This study aims to understand the importance of growing substrates on seedlings growth in nursery. Composite soil samples were collected at 20 cm depth from 4 seed trees in 5 different sites in Togo (West Africa). Two batches were made for each site, one of which was sterilized by autoclave and the other has received no treatment. Three growing parameters (length of stem, number of buds and number of leaves) of the plantlets obtained from sterilized seeds were measured during 20 weeks in the nursery. Results show for each site a significantly better growing rate of seedlings on unsterilized substrates, compared to sterilized substrates. At the end of the experiment, plantlets were 8.75 ± 2.32 cm mean height on sterilized substrates when they reach 19.20 ± 5.00 cm on unsterilized substrates. The mean number of buds and leaves per plantlet varies from 2.23 ± 1.71 buds and 3.00 ± 1.86 leaves to 10.73 ± 3.28 buds and 11.09 ± 2.48 leaves at the same date, respectively on sterilized and unsterilized substrates. The low growing rate on sterilized substrates should be linked to the low capacity of plantlets in mobilizing phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen without microorganisms. Negative impacts of sterilization were highlighted on seedlings by necrosis of buds and leaves from the 7th week of growth, demonstrating a positive effect of soil microorganisms on the proper development of the seedlings.

African kino tree (Pterocarpus erinaceus) plants are widely used species in afforestation programs but germination of seed and rate of seedling growth are major drawback. This study was therefore carried out to compare the effect of decomposed organic matter on the seedling growth rate of Pterocarpus erinaceus. The experiment was conducted in the screen house of Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria for a period of six months. Seedlings of P. erinaceus were subjected to four treatments. Decomposed kitchen waste (KW), decomposed fruit waste (FrW), decomposed fish waste (FW) and decomposed White leadtree (Leucaena leucocephala (LL)) leaves and control (CN). The experiment was laid out using a Completely Randomized Design. Each treatment was replicated seven times. Results showed that there was significant difference (P≤0.05) among the height of P. erinaceus seedlings subjected to different fertilizer applications. The mean seedlings height ranged from 11.55 to 18.34 cm with the highest mean height from seedlings subjected to LL while seedlings without fertilizer application had the least mean height. There was no significant difference (P≤0.05) among the collar diameter of P. erinaceus seedlings subjected to different fertilizer applications. The mean seedlings collar diameter ranged from 1.27 to 1.94 mm with the highest mean collar diameter from seedlings subjected to FW while seedlings without fertilizer application (CN) had the least mean collar diameter. Results also indicated no significant difference (P≤0.05) among the number of leaves of P. erinaceus seedlings subjected to different fertilizer applications. The mean seedlings number of leaves ranged from 12 to 16 with the highest mean number of leaves from seedlings subjected to LL, KW and FW while seedlings without fertilizer application had the least mean number of leaves. It is recommended that application of decomposed organic matter for proper growth of Pterocarpus erinaceus seedlings should be encouraged and properly disseminated to farmers.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) represents an advantageous solution for the treatment and valorization of organic waste and wastewater. To be suitable for energy purposes, biogas generated in AD must be subjected to proper upgrading treatments aimed at the removal of carbon dioxide and other undesirable gases. Pressurized anaerobic digestion (PDA) has gained increasing interest in recent years, as it allows the generation of a high-quality biogas with a low CO2 content. However, high pressures can cause some negative impacts on the AD process, which could be accentuated by feedstock characteristics. Until now, few studies have focused on the application of PAD to the treatment of real waste. The present work investigated, for the first time, the performance of the pressurized anaerobic digestion of raw compost leachate. The study was conducted in a lab-scale pressurized CSTR reactor, working in semi-continuous mode. Operating pressures from the atmospheric value to 4 bar were tested at organic loading rate (OLR) values of 20 and 30 kgCOD/m3d. In response to the rise in operating pressure, for both OLR values tested, a decrease of CO2 content in biogas was observed, whereas the CH4 fraction increased to values around 75% at 4 bar. Despite this positive effect, the pressure growth caused a decline in COD removal from 88 to 62% in tests with OLR = 20 kgCOD/m3d. At OLR = 30 kgCOD/m3d, an overload condition was observed, which induced abatements of about 56%, regardless of the applied pressure. With both OLR values, biogas productions and specific methane yields decreased largely when the pressure was brought from atmospheric value to just 1 bar. The values went from 0.33 to 0.27 LCH4/gCODremoved at 20kgCOD/m3d, and from 0.27 to 0.18 LCH4/gCODremoved at 30 kgCOD/m3d. Therefore, as the pressure increased, although there was an enhanced biogas quality, the overall amount of methane was lowered. The pressured conditions did not cause substantial modification in the characteristics of digestates.

Urban development in coastal areas is intense and leads to the increase of sewage outfall and other negative impacts as consequences. Thus, stringent regulations establishing limits to the microbiological contamination of water and seafood are needed. The objective of this study is to evaluate the usefulness of Enterococci and Thermotolerant Coliform densities in the flesh of mussels Perna perna as an alternative tool for monitoring the microbiological quality of coastal waters. The study also considers allometric relations applied to clearance rates to understand rates of bacterial concentration. Bacterial loads obtained in mussels' flesh were from 50 to 4,300 times greater than in the water sampled in the vicinity of the mussels and some were considered inappropriate for consumption even when the water presented no restrictions. The mean clearance rate obtained for Enterococci retention was 317.7 ml h-1 and this rate (CR) is related to the mussels' size (L) by the equation CR = 28.3229L1.6421. The results showed that bacterial densities in the mussels' tissues may reflect chronic contamination of the environment and that clearance rates are important for taking the best decision in situations where, for example, it is desired to introduce mussels for aquaculture and the evaluation of the water concerned is required.

Abstract The objective was to test the effect on the immune status by feeding a combination of chicory-plantain and Se-yeast in lactating ewes subjected to intramammary infection (IMI) with 2×107CFU of Strep uberis in both glands. For the purpose we enrolled 28 Polypay lactating sheep from a prior study where they were randomly allocated to receive chicory (CS) or grass (GC) silage and either 3.6 mg of Se/day as Se-yeast (DiaMune, Diamond V) (Y) or isoenergetic-isonitrogenous alfalfa meal (C) for 2 months. For the present study, ewes were kept on the original dietary regiment except the CT group received a chicory-plantain silage(50% each). Blood was collected prior to and for 10 days after IMI for a complete blood count(VetScan HM5), leukocytes migration, and rectal temperature (RT). Data were analyzed using GLIMMIX (SAS)with time, silage type, and Se and their interactions as the fixed effects and ewe as random effect with significance declared at P ≤ 0.05. RT was lower in chicory vs. grass before IMI and Se limited the RT increase after IMI. Total WBC levels tended (P = 0.06) to increase in animals fed with Se after IMI, which was driven by a larger number of lymphocytes. Hematocrit, red blood cells, and hemoglobin were strongly decreased by IMI. The mean cell volume was overall larger in ewes fed with chicory-plantain silage while mean cell hemoglobin was larger in animal fed with grass silage. The platelet distribution width was affected by silage*Se interaction due to a positive effect by Se in grass-fed but negative in chicory-plantain-fed ewes. Migration of neutrophils was larger in animals fed with chicory-plantain before IMI but similar between groups after IMI. Overall, these findings indicate that Se supplementation can increase lymphocytes with no effect on neutrophils while activity of neutrophils is positively affected by feeding chicory-plantain silage.

Purpose. The black iris-lens diaphragm (ILD) can be used in the treatment of traumatic aniridia and aphakia. The aim of our study was to show postoperative functional and anatomic results and complications in a small case series. Methods. We retrospectively analyzed the files of 16 patients managed with a black ILD or a sole iris diaphragm in the period 1994–2007. Four of them were female and 12 were male. The mean age of the group was 50±17 years. At the time of the implantation, all of the eyes had already undergone primary surgical repair. Results. The preoperative best-corrected visual acuity in half of the patients was ≥0.1 and remained stable after the first postoperative year. During the follow-up years, one eye developed a subluxation of the implant and one eye an anterior chamber hemorrhage. At the same time, out of 8 eyes carrying a silicone tamponade in the vitreous cavity, silicone oil entered the anterior chamber in 3 cases. In one case, enucleation was undertaken due to phthisis. Conclusions. In the case of severely traumatized eyes with aniridia and aphakia, the implantation of a black ILD can have a positive effect on functional and anatomic stabilization.

In recent years, Mizoram has made immense progress in various sectors and initiated developmental programmes for its economic growth. An important contributing factor to this development and growth is the transport connectivity projects. Although connectivity projects can boost economic growth, its negative effects cannot be neglected. In view of this, the present research studies the impacts of Champhai – Zokhawthar road construction on the air quality and noise quality of the region. This comparative study of the impact on the quality of air and noise pollution in the pre-construction phase and construction phase provide a clear-cut example of the negative impacts caused by road construction and provide a fresh outlook for formulation of improved management plans. Air quality assessment was carried out using High Volume Air Sampler and the following parameters were monitored – suspended particulate matter (SPM), respirable suspended particulate matter (RSPM), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and sulphur dioxide (SO2). The results indicate that mean SPM concentration was increased by 22.82 µg/m3; RSPM concentration by 14.67 µg/m3; NO2 concentration by 4.08 µg/m3; and SO2 concentration was increased by 0.06 µg/m3 from the pre-construction phase to construction phase. Noise quality assessment was carried out at three sites – Zotlang, Melbuk and Zokhawthar by using Lutron SL-4001 Sound Level Meter and Leq, Lmax and Lmin were recorded and calculated. The mean noise level at Zotlang wasincreased by 8.72 dB (A) and at Melbuk the mean noise level was increased by 9.35 dB (A). However, at Zokhawthar, there was a decrease in mean noise level by 0.13 dB (A). From the present study, it is evident that road construction poses a threat to the air quality and noise quality of the study area and improved measuresneed to betaken to curb its negative impacts

Field experiment was carried out during 2010 rainy season to find the effect of seeding rate on the growth and yield of okra (Abelmuschus esculentus) in Zuru Northern Guinea Savannah. Zuru is located in Zuru Local government area of Kebbi State (Latitude 11o 251 to 11o 551 North and Longitude 4o 51 to 5o 251 East of the equator). The experiment consisted of three treatments that is planting okra at one plant per stand (S1), two plants per stand (S2) and three plants per stand (S3). The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) and the treatments replicated three time. The result of the experiment has shown that plant height and number of leaves/plant at 3, 6 and 9 weeks after planting (    WAP) were significantly influenced by seeding rate (P<0.05). At 3, 6 and 9 WAP tallest plants were obtained from okra plants planted at three plants/stand (27.83, 54.0 and 77.0cm) respectively followed by okra planted at two plant/stand (24.77, 50.67 and 74.33 leave/plant respectively ). However, more number of leaves/plant were obtained from okra plant at one plant/stand (9.67, 24.67 and 48.0 leaves/plant respectively) followed by okra planted at two plants/stand (8.33, 18.33 and 36.33 leaves/plant respectively). Seeding rate had significant influence on time of 50 percent flowering with one plant/stand first attaining 50 percent flowering stage just within 36.33 days followed by okra planted at two plants/stand (38 days). The mean fresh fruit yield of okra was also significantly influenced by seeding rate with the highest yield of fresh fruits obtained from three plants/stand (83.34/ha) followed by okra planted at two plants/stand (55.56/ha). However, the result of the findings recommends that, okra should be planted at two plants/stand for medium sized and marketable okra fresh fruits since at three plants/stand leads to the production of undersized fresh fruits which do not often attract customers. At one plant/stand, there seemed to be early fruiting and bigger sized fresh fruits but low total yield due to underutilization of land resource/space. Planting at one plant/stand should therefore be avoided
