Abstract Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) has definitely emerged as a powerful technique for total element determination and as a sensitive and selective detector in hyphenated methods for speciation analyses of elements in foods. In this review, the analytical challenges of elemental analysis of food and agricultural matrixes are discussed and several applications are examined. Selected examples illustrate the analytical approaches being used so far to address specific issues in various areas of food and nutrition research. The applications discussed include studies on dietary intake, element metabolism in man, transfer of elements through the food chain, effects of food processing and domestic preparation, and authenticity and origin assessment. The use of ICP-MS in the field of analytical quality assurance, food control, evaluation of food contact materials, and radionuclide contamination is also examined. Finally, the hyphenated techniques with ICP-MS detection used for elemental speciation in food are reviewed, and an overview of the main applications currently in the literature is presented. Throughout, recent trends and analytical developments likely to have a major impact on food-related areas are highlighted.

The aim of this paper is to evaluate using ICP/MS (inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry method ) the small amount of heavy metal existing in temporary teeth of children from area with high environmental risk regarding heavy metals, and to correlate this amount with the state of degradation of such teeth, taking into account that teeth are biological archive.

Galangal (Alpinia galanga(Linn.) Swartz.) is a popular spice in Thailand. Heavy metals, deriving from environmental pollution, might be contaminated in galangal rhizomes. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was a new and fast technique for ultratrace elemental analysis. The aim of this study was to validate a method for the determination of aluminium (Al), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), mercury (Hg), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) in galangal rhizomes according to the European standards (EU) using nitric acid digestion followed by ICP-MS. The parameters evaluated in the validation were recovery, repeatability and within-laboratory reproducibility, limit of detection (LOD), and limit of quantification (LOQ). This method was used to analyze the concentrations of 11 heavy metals in 15 samples of galangal rhizomes collected in Nakhon Pathom province. The metal concentrations varied considerably in the different sample sources. The concentration of heavy metals in the galangal samples arranged in increasing order was Hg < Cd < As < Cr < Pb < Ni < Cu < Zn < Fe < Mn < Al. An acid digestion and ICP-MS method was applicable to determination of 11 heavy metals in galangal rhizomes, based on the recovery analysis, cost, and time taken

Objective: The objective of this study was to determine heavy metals using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and phytochemical constituents of methanol extract of Caesalpinia bonducella seed kernel using gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Methods: In GC-MS investigation, 95% methanol extract of C. bonducella seed kernel was performed on JEOL GC MATE ΙΙ, column HP 5 MS, and Quadruple, double-focusing mass analyzer. Determination of heavy metals from C. bonducella powder was performed using Thermo scientific I CAP Q instrument, for plant powder digestion Anton Paar Microwave model: Multiwave 300 was used. Antimicrobial activity was evaluated using microdilutions broth method. Results: GC-MS analysis of methanol extract of C. bonducella seed kernel has shown 11 different phytoconstituents. ICP-MS analysis has shown the concentration of ten heavy metals in C. bonducella seed kernel as follows: Cr 1.5 ppm, Fe 72.72 ppm, Co 0.33 ppm, Ni 0.03 ppm, Cu 10.73 ppm, Zn 18.44 ppm, As 0.03 ppm, Cd 0.02 ppm, and Pb 0.58 ppm. Conclusion: Result showed that the plant is safe to use from toxic heavy metals such as As, Cd, and Pb. It is suitable to check frequently the heavy metal content in the plant used in traditional medicines before given to patients.

The aim of this study was to determine heavy metals levels in some varieties of tea from the Romanian market. For this purpose, 15 samples of tea of the following assortments were analyzed: green tea, black tea, herb tea and fruit tea. Determination of heavy metals traces was achieved with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The quantities of Pb, Hg and Cd from analyzed tea samples were compared with the permissible dose in accordance with the Notice of Scientific Panel on Contaminants in the Food Chain of European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
