A highly crystallized monoclinic-scheelite type BiVO4 powders were successfully synthesized by solvothermal method. The as-synthesized BiVO4 powders were characterized by XRD, FE-SEM, Raman spectroscopy, UV-vis DRS spectroscopy and TA-PL. From the XRD data and Raman spectra, the monoclinic-scheelite phase BiVO4 sample can be obtained at higher solvothermal synthesis temperature more than 140 oC. The preparation conditions such as, the Bi/V molar ratio and synthesis temperature, have significantly effects on the morphologies of the BiVO4 samples. BVO2 sample shows the highest PL peak, which has the highest formation rate of OH radicals and the highest photocatalytic activity. This result suggests that the formation rate of OH radicals shows a good correlation with the photocatalytic activity.

Flower-like Bi2WO6 were successfully synthesized using the solvothermal method at different temperatures and characterized by XRD, FE-SEM, and DRS. We also investigated the photocatalytic activity of Bi2WO6 for the decomposition of rhodamine B under visible light irradiation. From XRD and SEM results, the reaction temperature has significant effects on the morphologies of the samples. From DRS results, Bi2WO6 samples displayed the absorption spectrum up to the visible region and then they showed the high photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation, as a comparison with TiO2-P25.

The p-n junction photocatalysts, p-CuO (at. 0-25%)/n-ZnO nanocomposite were prepared through hydrothermal method without using any organic solvent or surfactant. The as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy, and UV-vis spectroscopy. The results demonstrated that the CuO/ZnO nanocomposite presented a two-dimensional morphology composed of sheet-like ZnO nanostructures adorned with CuO nanoparticles. The photocatalytic activity of CuO/ZnO with different Cu/Zn molar rations and pure ZnO synthesized by the identical synthetic route were evaluated by degrading methylene blue (MB) dye under UV-visible light irradiation. The CuO/ZnO with Cu/Zn molar ratio of 4% exhibits the highest photocatalytic activity compared that of the other photocatalysts under the identical conditions. It is mainly attributed to the increased charge separation rate in the nanocomposite and the extended photo-responding range.

A BiOCl/TiO2/diatomite (BTD) composite was synthesized via a modified sol–gel method and precipitation/calcination method for application as a photocatalyst and shows promise for degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater upon visible-light irradiation. In the composite, diatomite was used as a carrier to support a layer of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles and bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) nanosheets. The results show that TiO2 nanoparticles and BiOCl nanosheets uniformly cover the surface of diatomite and bring TiO2 and BiOCl into close proximity. Rhodamine B was used as the target degradation product and visible light (λ > 400 nm) was used as the light source for the evaluation of the photocatalytic properties of the prepared BTD composite. The results show that the catalytic performance of the BTD composite under visible-light irradiation is much higher than that of TiO2 or BiOCl alone. When the molar ratio of BiOCl to TiO2 is 1:1 and the calcination temperature is 400 °C, the composite was found to exhibit the best catalytic effect. Through the study of the photocatalytic mechanism, it is shown that the strong visible-light photocatalytic activity of the BTD composite results mainly from the quick migration of photoelectrons from the conduction band of TiO2/diatomite to the surface of BiOCl, which promotes the separation effect and reduces the recombination rate of the photoelectron–hole pair. Due to the excellent catalytic performance, the BTD composite shows great potential for wide application in the field of sewage treatment driven by solar energy.

Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions singly activated Gd2O2S hollow spheres have been successfully synthesized via solvothermal method by using Gd (NO3)3, Eu (NO3)3, Tb (NO3)3 and thiourea as raw materials. Detailed characterization of the as-prepared samples were obtained by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electronic microscope (TEM) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The results demonstrate that at 220 oC for 24 h, the molar ratio of thiourea/Gd3+ has no significant impact on the phase composition of Gd2O2S products. With the reaction time increased from 6 h to 24 h, the morphology of Gd2O2S samples changed from ellipsoidal to near-spheroidal structure, but still remained hollow structure. PL results show that the strongest emission peaks for Gd2O2S:Eu3+ and Gd2O2S:Tb3+ samples were centered at 625 nm and 545 nm, corresponding to the 5D0→7F2 transition of Eu3+ ions and 5D4→7F5 transition of Tb3+ ions, respectively. The quenching concentrations for Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions were 12% and 6%, which can be attributed to the exchange interaction for Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions, respectively.

Tungsten trioxide (WO3) is known as a visible light responsive photocatalyst, but its photocatalytic activity is relatively low, as compared to that of anatase titanium dioxide (TiO2). To enhance the activity, high specific surface areas are necessary. In this study, WO3particles with a hierarchical architecture, which was assemblies of spherical particles 20 – 30 nm in diameter, were synthesized by the solvothermal method. The hierarchical WO3particles had high specific surface areas and their photocatalytic activity was found to be 2.5 times higher than that of the commercial WO3.

TiO2hollow microspheres were synthesized by a facile solvothermal method. The prepared samples were characterized by the XRD, SEM, TEM, BET and UV-vis. The results showed that the TiO2hollow microspheres offered an enhanced photocatalytic activity due to the multiple reflections of the UV light within the inner hollow structure.

Abstract The present work mainly aimed to synthesize different weight percentages (0.25-1.00 wt%) of Manganese (Mn2+) and Magnesium (Mg2+) bimetal ions doped TiO2 nanomaterial assisted with different weight percentages (5-15 wt%) of Gemini Surfactant (GS) using sol-gel method. The bimetal doped and undoped TiO2 photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), UV-Visible Diffused Reflectance Spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analyzer, and Photoluminescence Spectroscopy. Characterization results evinced that Mn2+/Mg2+ bimetal ions doping and encapsulation of GS on TiO2 nanoparticles promote the formation of mesoporous multi-particle anatase TiO2 nanocatalysts with a narrowed band gap, less particle size, and high surface area. The surface elemental composition of the 0.25 wt% Mn2+& 1.00 wt% Mg2+ bimetal doped TiO2 in presence of 10 wt% of Gemini surfactant (after calcination) revealed the presence of both the metal dopants Mn2+ and Mg2+ along with the Ti and O and their chemical interactions were further confirmed by FT-IR results. The photocatalytic activity of these catalysts was assessed by the degradation of Methyl Red (MR) using visible light irradiation. To understand the effect of different reaction parameters on the photocatalytic activity of the nanocatalysts such as the dopant concentration, GS concentration, catalyst dosage, solution pH, and initial dye concentrations were investigated and optimized to achieve the best performance. The photoluminescence results conclude that OH radicals are the crucial reactive species responsible for oxidative photocatalytic degradation of MR.
