Background: While investigating the real-time impedance at acupuncture points (acupoints), it was found that regular sinusoidal waves were present that corresponded to the pulsing of certain organs, such as respiration and duodenal waves, the stomach’s slow waves, and also the heart’s beating.Methods: This study investigated such respiration waves at lung-related acupoints to clarify their relation to the respiration pacesetter mechanism. The impedance at key acupoints was monitored in real time while the patients’ breathing slowed after exercise.Results: In all 7 patients studied, the respiration and heart-beat waves matched the rates in the corresponding organs at rest, and did not vary markedly due to exercise. In 3 of the 7 patients, their post-exercise respiration rate exactly matched that of their duodenal waves, but then dropped, stepwise, back to their usual respiration rate. In the other 4 patients, their post-exercise respiration rate did not reach that of their duodenal waves, so this pattern was not triggered.Conclusion: The results suggested that as well as the brainstem respiration pacesetter, there was also a separate “pace signal” present which remained constant and seemed to define the respiration rate when at rest. It is currently unknown what mechanism causes the respiration rate to increase due to exercise. But these results suggest that the brainstem pacesetter is sometimes guided by the duodenal pace signal instead of the lung pace signal, which may explain how the pacesetter is able to jump to a higher rate, even though its chemoreceptor inputs may be unchanged.

The interactivity of an immersive environment comes up from the relationship that is established between the user and the system. This relationship results in a set of data exchanges between human and technological actors. The real-time biofeedback devices allow to collect in real time the biodata generated by the user during the exhibition. The analysis, processing and conversion of these biodata into multimodal data allows to relate the stimuli with the emotions they trigger. This work describes an adaptive model for biofeedback data flows management used in the design of interactive immersive systems. The use of an affective algorithm allows to identify the types of emotions felt by the user and the respective intensities. The mapping between stimuli and emotions creates a set of biodata that can be used as elements of interaction that will readjust the stimuli generated by the system. The real-time interaction generated by the evolution of the user’s emotional state and the stimuli generated by the system allows him to adapt attitudes and behaviors to the situations he faces.

Top-down vs. bottom-up approaches to ethical behavior are discussed, followed by an overview of some of the ways in which traditional ethics has informed robotics. Two macro-trends are then identified, one involving the evolution of moral consciousness in man and machine, the other involving the fading away of the boundary between the real and the virtual.

Abstract. Real-time, single-particle fluorescence instruments used to detect atmospheric bioaerosol particles are increasingly common, yet no standard fluorescence calibration method exists for this technique. This gap limits the utility of these instruments as quantitative tools and complicates comparisons between different measurement campaigns. To address this need, we have developed a method to produce size-selected particles with a known mass of fluorophore, which we use to calibrate the fluorescence detection of a Wideband Integrated Bioaerosol Sensor (WIBS-4A). We use mixed tryptophan–ammonium sulfate particles to calibrate one detector (FL1; excitation  =  280 nm, emission  =  310–400 nm) and pure quinine particles to calibrate the other (FL2; excitation  =  280 nm, emission  =  420–650 nm). The relationship between fluorescence and mass for the mixed tryptophan–ammonium sulfate particles is linear, while that for the pure quinine particles is nonlinear, likely indicating that not all of the quinine mass contributes to the observed fluorescence. Nonetheless, both materials produce a repeatable response between observed fluorescence and particle mass. This procedure allows users to set the detector gains to achieve a known absolute response, calculate the limits of detection for a given instrument, improve the repeatability of the instrumental setup, and facilitate intercomparisons between different instruments. We recommend calibration of single-particle fluorescence instruments using these methods.

To speak of ‘atheism’ in the context of early modern England immediately invites confusion, and it is for this reason that I shall place the word in inverted commas throughout this paper. On the one hand, I intend to deal with what a twentieth-century reader might expect ‘atheism’ to imply, namely overt hostility to religion. On the other, I want to consider at some length the profuse writings on ‘atheism’ that survive from the period: in these, as we shall see, the word if often used to describe a much broader range of phenomena, in a manner typical of a genre which often appears frustratingly heightened and rhetorical. Some might argue that this juxtaposition displays—and will encourage—muddled thought. But, on the contrary, I think that it is precisely from such a combination that we stand to learn most. Not only are we likely to discover how contemporaries experienced and responded to the threat of irreligion in the society of their day. In addition, by re-examining the relationship between the real and the exaggerated in their perceptions of such heterodoxy, we may be able to draw broader conclusions about early modern thought.

'Eliamani's Homestead' was shot as a result of long-term anthropological research in Tanzania and the translations were created in close cooperation with the Maasai research participants. Originally recorded for research purposes for a project on the relationship between images of and interactions with ‘the other’, the 20-minute single-shot includes jerky camera movements, but was left uncut and without voiceover in order to give the viewer a real-time experience of 'being there'. Within anthropology, the documentary invites to reflect on parallels between anthropology and tourism, and spurs debates regarding reflexivity. It addresses elements of the 'observer paradox' through the almost complete invisibility of the researcher’s camera, which stands in stark contrast with the obtrusive tourist cameras. That is, until Eliamani looks straight into the lens and dismissively comments upon the researcher’s camera too, making researcher and the documentary’s public part of the voyeuristic 'problem' as well. Outside anthropology, it invokes debates about how we see and interact with 'the other' in (cultural) tourism as well as in wider contexts. It thus addresses the question whether and how audiovisual data segments could be used to share anthropological knowledge inside and outside the discipline and academia.

Ethernet is the most promising solution to reduce complexity and enhance the band- width in the next generation in-car networks. Dedicated Ethernet protocols enable the real-time aspects in such networks. One promising candidate is the IEEE 802.1Q Time- Sensitive Networking protocol suite. Common Ethernet technologies, however, increases the vulnerability of the car infrastructure as they widen the attack surface for many com- ponents. In this paper proposes an IEEE 802.1Qci based algorithm that on the one hand, protects against DoS attacks by metering incoming Ethernet frames. On the other hand, it adapts to the behavior of the Credit Based Shaping algorithm, which was standardized for Audio/Video Bridging, the predecessor of Time-Sensitive Networking. A simulation of this proposed Credit Based Metering algorithm evaluates the concept.

This chapter examines four major issues in International Political Economy (IPE). The first concerns power and the relationship between politics and economics, and more specifically whether politics is in charge of economics or whether it is the other way around. The second issue deals with development and underdevelopment in developing countries. The third is about the nature and extent of economic globalization, and currently takes places in a context of increasing inequality between and inside countries. The fourth and final issue concerns how to study the real world from an IPE perspective and it pits the hard science American School against the more qualitative and normative British School.

A way of remembering the sanctity of the other may inform and guide Christianity towards a more robust dialogical perspective with others.  This essay will widen the question for the Christian community by exploring how Judaism remembers those who have been wronged.  The methodology is phenomenological in so far as the essay explores the phenomenon of return (teshuva) through the thought of Emmanuel Levinas in dialogue with Abraham Joshua Heschel.  When Christianity regards Judaism as a living tradition, instead of a relic, atonement and forgiveness rises to the broader horizon of being ethically relevant in an interreligious context.  The real-time teaching (talmud) from righteousness (tzedakah) in Judaism opens opportunities for dialogue with otherness.  This exploration of what forgiveness and atonement may mean in a post-Shoah world for Jews and Christians may only contribute to how dialoguing with otherness is a necessary form of return (teshuva) for all interreligious dialogues.
