Selected Papers from iFAN 2010

The 2010 International Symposium on Intelligent Systems (iFAN2010) was held at Tokyo Metropolitan University, Tokyo, Japan, in September 2010, in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of the 2010 Intelligent System Symposium (FAN2010). These two symposiums provided a fine opportunity for researchers to exchange ideas on basic theories and applications on intelligent systems and iFAN2010 was the first international symposium in the history of the FAN symposium. From more than 200 papers of FAN2010 and iFAN2010, papers of top quality were invited to this special issue. From 17 papers submitted, 13 outstanding papers have been selected for this special issue after fair and peer review process. As these two symposiums covered a wide variety of intelligence-related issues, this special issue also consists of various topics from basic theories such as machine learning, adaptive control, and optimization, to application-oriented studies such as medical image processing, human support systems, and land mine detection. This issue is expected to contribute much to research on intelligent systems. As the Editors of this special issue, we thank the contributors and reviewers for their time and cooperation. We look forward to actively participating to the next FAN2011, to be held at Kobe University, Hyogo, Japan, in September 2011, which we hope will be as successful and fruitful as the 2010 symposium.

The 10th International Symposium on Advanced Intelligent Systems 2009 (ISIS2009) held on August 17-19, 2009, at the Bumin Campus of Dong-A University (http://www.donga.ac.kr/) in Busan, Korea, was sponsored by the Korean Institute of Intelligent System Society (KIIS) and cosponsored technically by the Japan Society for Fuzzy Theory and Intelligent Informatics (SOFT) and the Taiwanese Association for Artificial Intelligence (TAAI). The international symposium focused on state-of-art accomplishments, innovations, and potential directions in intelligent systems. It also marked an epoch of innovation and the dissemination of research into many interesting fields. Its broad theme covered the latest in technical fields, including artificial intelligence, intelligent systems, Ambient Intelligence (AmI), bioinformatics, information technology, and their wide-ranging applications, from basic theoretical work to practical engineering applications. The 80 featured papers were presented by 120 participants. With so many papers submitted to JACIII, this special issue consists of just two strictly selected papers. The first, deals with emerging research trends in robotics, proposing a new trajectory generation using the univariate Dynamic Encoding Algorithm for Searches (uDEAS) in the turning of a biped walking robot. The second paper, presenting the latest findings in AmI, details a newly designed and implemented robust capacitive sensor with parasitic parameter modeling over a range of high 200 KHz frequencies based on an Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) algorithm. I would like to thank Mr. Kunihiko Uchida, Mr. Shinya Wakai, Ms. Reiko Ohta, and Mr. Shinji Isokawa as editorial staff of Fuji Technology Press for editing these complex manuscripts into their final form. - Thirty years of the history of psychology in Italy, since about the mid 1950s to the 1980s, are reviewed, with a discussion on the major trends, academic schools, and leading figures. This paper originally appeared in the special issue for the 20th anniversary of the journal Psicoterapia e Scienze Umane (1986, 20 [3]: 59-73). Paolo Bozzi, typical expression of a Mittel-European culture, was not only professor of psychology but also violinist, composer, musicologist, and philosopher of physics.

This article provides an introduction to the 20th Anniversary Special Issue of the Journal of Classical Sociology. It begins with some brief observations on the key developments that have shaped the disciplinary core of sociology over the past decades. It goes on to reflect on the role of classical sociology in Europe and beyond, drawing attention to its continuing presence in British and Anglo-American intellectual circles. Far from existing in a bubble of academic ivory towers, the paradigms emerging from disputes in the social sciences in general and in sociology in particular are profoundly shaped by wider historical trends – notably those influenced by different forms of collective action, as illustrated in the impact of social movements on the university sector in the late 1960s. In light of recent calls for ‘the decolonization of academia’, we ask to what extent sociology can, and should, strive to go beyond the hegemony of the ‘Western’ canon. Having given a succinct overview of the 20-year history of JCS, we elucidate the different formats of the material published in the journal, stressing the importance of editorial flexibility. On a more substantive note, we point out that the thematic scope of the work published in JCS has been wide-ranging and inclusive – not only because of its editors’ broad conception of ‘classics’ and ‘classicality’, but also because of the interdisciplinary spirit permeating the journal. This commitment, as we explain, manifests itself in the wide range of thinkers and topics discussed – from a multiplicity of perspectives – in the journal. We also grapple with noteworthy challenges posed by the academic publishing industry in the early 21st century, including the difficulties arising from peer-review processes. Finally, we express our gratitude to those who have contributed to this 20th Anniversary Special Issue and emphasize the journal’s commitment to defending the legacy of classical sociology.

This special issue of journal covers a broad field ranging from intelligent systems to robotics. These papers were selected among the papers that were presented at the Joint 4th International Symposium on Advanced Intelligent Systems and 2nd International Conference on Soft Computing and Intelligent Systems which was held in Jeju, Korea on September 25-28, 2003. In the above symposium, there was a wide spectrum of intelligent systems and related topics, including sessions: intelligent systems, intelligent control, fuzzy sets, fuzzy systems, neural networks, robotics, genetic algorithms, image processing, soft computing, artificial life, etc. Many interesting results were presented at the symposium. Among these various papers, this special issue offers a selection of sixteen papers that contribute to advances of intelligent systems in various aspects. The topics that the selected papers deal with are fuzzy controller for the mobile robot control, neural networks and their application to image processing, intelligent control for a robot, intelligent system for probe detection, fuzzy image processing, genetic algorithms, fuzzy clustering for incomplete categorical data, predictive fuzzy controller for an electric four-wheeled vehicle. As guest editors of this special issue, we would like to express our thanks to authors for their contribution, the anonymous referees for their review, and Prof. Kaoru Hirota for his giving the opportunity to publish this special issue.

The article discusses the history of the development of the problem of using artificial intelligence systems in education and pedagogic. Two directions of its development are shown: “Computational Pedagogic” and “Educational Data Mining”, in which poorly studied aspects of the internal mechanisms of functioning of artificial intelligence systems in this field of activity are revealed. The main task is a problem of interface of a kernel of the system with blocks of pedagogical and thematic databases, as well as with the blocks of pedagogical diagnostics of a student and a teacher. The role of the pedagogical diagnosis as evident reflection of the complex influence of factors and reasons is shown. It provides the intelligent system with operative and reliable information on how various reasons intertwine in the interaction, which of them are dangerous at present, where recession of characteristics of efficiency is planned. All components of the teaching and educational system are subject to diagnosis; without it, it is impossible to own any pedagogical situation optimum. The means in obtaining information about students, as well as the “mechanisms” of work of intelligent systems based on innovative ideas of advanced pedagogical experience in diagnostics of the professionalism of a teacher, are considered. Ways of realization of skill of the teacher on the basis of the ideas developed by the American scientists are shown. Among them, the approaches of researchers D. Rajonz and U. Bronfenbrenner who put at the forefront the teacher’s attitude towards students, their views, intellectual and emotional characteristics are allocated. An assessment of the teacher’s work according to N. Flanders’s system, in the form of the so-called “The Interaction Analysis”, through the mechanism of fixing such elements as: the verbal behavior of the teacher, events at the lesson and their sequence is also proposed. A system for assessing the professionalism of a teacher according to B. O. Smith and M. O. Meux is examined — through the study of the logic of teaching, using logical operations at the lesson. Samples of forms of external communication of the intellectual system with the learning environment are given. It is indicated that the conclusion of the found productive solutions can have the most acceptable and comfortable form both for students and for the teacher in the form of three approaches. The first shows that artificial intelligence in this area can be represented in the form of robotized being in the shape of a person; the second indicates that it is enough to confine oneself only to specially organized input-output systems for targeted transmission of effective methodological recommendations and instructions to both students and teachers; the third demonstrates that life will force one to come up with completely new hybrid forms of interaction between both sides in the form of interactive educational environments, to some extent resembling the educational spaces of virtual reality.

Here I survey a sample of the essays and reviews on the sciences of the long eighteenth century published in this journal since it was founded in 1969. The connecting thread is some historiographic reflections on the role that disciplines—in both the sciences we study and the fields we practice—have played in the development of the history of science over the past half century. I argue that, as far as disciplines are concerned, we now find ourselves a bit closer to a situation described in our studies of the long eighteenth century than we were fifty years ago. This should both favor our understanding of that period and, hopefully, make the historical studies that explore it more relevant to present-day developments and science policy.
