This second special issue from the Joint 5th International Conference on Soft Computing and Intelligent Systems and the 11th International Symposium on Advanced Intelligent Systems (SCIS & ISIS) 2010 presents 11 progressive papers covering topics from Fuzzy c-Means, clustering, evolutionary algorithms, and self-organizing maps to optimization, spiral phenomena, matroids, multirobot systems, and reinforcement learning. This wide range of research interests reflects current trends in the SCIS & ISIS conference series. As such, they demonstrate how near-future research interests are gradually moving toward exciting new directions. We thank the authors and reviewers for taking time out from their busy schedules to make this publication possible. We are especially grateful to Prof. Toshio Fukuda of Nagoya University and to Prof. Kaoru Hirota of the Tokyo Institute of Technology for giving us the opportunity to guest-edit JACIII. This third special issue on papers from SCIS&ISIS 2006 draws its contents from a highly successful conference attracting 526 participants from 31 countries and 464 original papers, including 297 in 60 organized sessions. The invaluable contributions by the session organizers made this conference attractive and worthwhile in soft computing and advanced intelligent systems research. Having chaired the conference's organized session committee, I wish to express my gratitude for their assistance. Some 42 selected papers have already been published in Volumes 1 and 2 of this special issue (Vol.11, Nos.6 and 7). The present volume introduces 22 papers from organized sessions in extended form after preliminary selection and review by session organizers, chairs, and international SCIS&ISIS 2006 program committees. These papers cover fields related to intelligent systems, ranging from theoretical to practical issues such as self-organizing maps, neural networks, fuzzy clustering, fuzzy control, intelligent robots, secure smart spaces, data mining, and intelligent communication systems. The guest editors believe that readers will be inspired by these highly interesting papers, which contain clues to exploring new and seminal ideas for that next step in research. I thank all of the authors and reviewers for the time and effort they put into this special issue. I am grateful to Prof. Toshio Fukuda of Nagoya University and to Prof. Kaoru Hirota of the Tokyo Institute of Technology for the opportunity to take part in this work.

Welcome to this special issue of the Journal of Advanced Computational Intelligence and Intelligent Informatics (JACIII). I am pleased to introduce 41 selected papers presented at the 3rd International Conference on Soft Computing and Intelligent Systems (SCIS) and the 7th International Symposium on Advanced Intelligent Systems (ISIS) held on September 17-21, 2008, at Nagoya University in Nagoya, Japan. This conference featured 401 original papers in presentations attended by some 500 participants. SCIS & ISIS is a biennial international joint conference in the field of soft computing and intelligent systems, including branches of research ranging from fuzzy systems, neural networks, and evolutionary computation to multiagent systems, artificial intelligence, and robotics. This current issue presents 20 papers covering most of the conference topics including fuzzy theory, self-organizing maps, robotics, computer vision, and optimization algorithms. I would like to thank the authors and reviewers and SCIS & ISIS 2008 for making this special issue possible. SCIS & ISIS is a biennial international joint conference in the field of soft computing and intelligent systems, including branches of researches from fuzzy systems, neural networks, evolutionary computation, multi-agent systems, artificial intelligence or robotics. SCIS & ISIS 2006 falls on the 3rd International Conference on Soft Computing and Intelligent Systems (SCIS) and the 7th International Symposium on Advanced Intelligent Systems (ISIS) held at Tokyo Institute of Technology, in Tokyo, Japan, on September 20-24, 2006. In this conference, 464 original papers were accepted for presentation and the number of attendees was 526. After preliminary selection and review made by the session chairs and the International Program Committees of SCIS & ISIS 2006, we have selected more than 50 papers to be published in extended form in the Special Issue of the Journal of Advanced Computational Intelligence and Intelligent Informatics. The accepted papers are published as the special issues in Vol.11, No.6, 7, and 8 in 2007. This current issue presents 23 papers and covers most of the topics of the conference including fuzzy theories, self-organizing maps, and the optimization of neural networks. The learning and search methods in computational intelligence and real-world applications to image processing, robotics and manufacturing systems are highlighted in this current issue. I would like to thank all the authors and reviewers for their contribution to make this special issue possible. As mentioned in the editorial for the special issue on selected papers from SCIS & ISIS 2006 (No.1) by Dr. Naoyuki Kubota, the 3rd International Conference on Soft Computing and Intelligent Systems (SCIS) and the 7th International Symposium on Advanced Intelligent Systems (ISIS) have been highly successful with 464 original papers accepted for presentation and participants numbering 526. We have selected approximately 50 quality papers to be published in extended form in the Special Issue of the Journal of Advanced Computational Intelligence and Intelligent Informatics, following publication of the first volume (Vol.11, No.6) comprising 23 papers. Increasing longevity, along with an aging population in Europe, has caused serious concerns about diet-related chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and certain cancers. As recently noted during the coronavirus pandemic, regular exercise and a robust immune system complemented by adequate consumption of fruit and vegetables are recommended due to their known health benefits. Although the volume of fresh vegetable consumption in the EU is barely growing, demand for diversified, nutritious, and exotic vegetables has been increasing. Therefore, the European market for fresh Asian vegetables is expected to expand across the EU member states, and the introduction of new vegetables has enormous potential. We conducted this review to address the high number and wide range of Asian vegetable species with a commercial potential for introduction into the current European vegetable market. Many of them have not received any attention yet. Four Asian vegetables: (1) Korean ginseng sprout, (2) Korean cabbage, (3) Coastal hog fennel and (4) Japanese (Chinese or Korean) angelica tree, are further discussed. All of these vegetables possess several health benefits, are increasingly in demand, are easy to cultivate, and align with current trends of the European vegetable market, e.g., vegetables having a unique taste, higher value, are decorative and small. Introducing Asian vegetables will enhance the diversity of nutritious horticultural products in Europe, associated with all their respective consumption benefits. Future research on the Asian vegetable market within Europe is needed. In addition, experimental studies of Asian vegetables under practical conditions for their production in different European environments are required. Economic, social, and ecological aspects also ought to be considered.

<div>Low-power wide area (LPWA) technologies are strongly recommended as the underlying</div><div>networks for Internet of Things (IoT) applications. They offer attractive features, including wide-range</div><div>coverage, long battery life, and low data rates. This paper reviews the current trends in this technology,</div><div>with an emphasis on the services it provides and the challenges it faces. The industrial paradigms for LPWA</div><div>implementation are presented. Compared with other work in the field, this paper focuses on the need for</div><div>integration among different LPWA technologies and recommends the appropriate LPWA solutions for a</div><div>wide range of IoT application and service use cases. Opportunities created by these technologies in the</div><div>market are also analyzed. The latest research efforts to investigate and improve the operation of LPWA</div><div>networks are also compared and classified to enable researchers to quickly get up to speed on the current</div><div>status of this technology. Finally, challenges facing LPWA are identified and directions for future research</div><div>are recommended.</div>

The 8th International Symposium on Advanced Intelligent Systems (ISIS 2007), a biennial joint conference between Korea and Japan, focuses on artificial intelligence, intelligent systems, information technology, and their applications. ISIS 2007, held on September 5-8 at Soraksan National Park under the auspices of the Korea Fuzzy Logic and Intelligent Systems Society (KFIS), was attended by 265 researchers, engineers, and other professionals and featured 206 presentations. Of more than 20 papers preliminarily selected and reviewed by the ISIS 2007 International Program Committees, 7 were chosen for the special issue of the Journal of Advanced Computational Intelligence and Intelligent Informatics, centering on advanced intelligent systems including robotics, pattern recognition, data mining, and decision-making systems. The content and conclusions presented in these fine papers should prove both interesting and informative to specialists and generalists alike. I thank the authors and reviewers for their painstaking contributions to this special issue and Prof. Kaoru Hirota of the Tokyo Institute of Technology for inviting me to guest-edit this work.

AbstractNeuropathic pain and fibromyalgia are prevalent diseases which have major consequences on healthcare resources and the individual. From the clinical point of view neuropathic pains represent a heterogeneous group of aetiologically different diseases ranging from cancer to diabetes. Patients with fibromyalgia also display clinical features common in neuropathic pain suggesting that there might be some overlap. The mechanisms responsible for symptoms and signs in both diseases are still unknown. Recently, there have been numerous reports of various pharmacological treatments of neuropathic pain and fibromyalgia with often disappointing results. Most of the studies were of short duration, had high attrition rates, and displayed other methodological problems. Some compounds had high rates of adverse effects which makes it often difficult for the patients to tolerate the treatment, especially in the long-term. At present, the best options for medication treatment are tricyclic antidepressants in lower dosage than usual in psychiatric disorders and a wide range of anticonvulsants. Opioids are sometimes recommended but have been found to have minor efficacy. Recently, there have been more controlled trials, which are reported here if they had been published between 2002 and 2004. Various compounds have been tested in different studies. Treatment of fibromyalgia, which has many features in common with depressive symptoms, became the focus of interest. New promising studies with dual serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (duloxetine and milnacipram) and a newer antiepileptic drug (pregabalin) are in progress. Future research will have to apply new approaches (eg, using a mechanism based classification of neuropathic pain and carrying out studies in populations with the same symptom but not necessarily the same disease) in order to find effective treatments for these common and often debilitating diseases.
