Data of the study of microphytobenthos of Crimean coastal waters of the Sea of Azov during 2005–2006, 2008–2011 and 2014 at 17 stations in the Sivash Gulf (East and West), Kamysh-Burunskaya Bay (Kerch) and bays of Kazantip Cape are given. Totally 200 taxa of microalgae belonging to 77 genera were found. Of these, 78 species – saprobity indicators, related to cyanobacteria (17 %) and diatoms (83 %), from 39 genera, for which bioindicative characteristics of organic water pollution are known, are used for the analysis of different ecotopes and regions. A leading place in microalgae flora belongs to a group of betamesosaprobionts (31 species) – indicators of moderate organic pollution, or of the III class of water quality with index of saprobity S = 2.0. The second place belongs to a group of oligosaprobionts (10 species), or of the II class of water quality, which is typical for natural clean waters with S = 1.0. According to the indicator of microalgae, there are no negative changes in the water quality in the regions. This indicates that anthropogenic impacts do not exceed the self-restoring potential of the marine ecosystems. However, the presence of the IV class of water quality indicators (17–21 %) in benthic communities indicates a constant flow of organic substances, which are gradually utilized by the living component of coastal ecosystems. The comparative data of the ratio of the Sea of Azov indicator microalgae species with those of other seas of moderate latitudes are discussed.

AbstractBioindication of organic pollution and seawater quality was carried out for the first time in the western part of the Sea of Azov on the basis of species composition and quantitative characteristics of microphytobenthos. A total of 229 algal samples were collected at 17 sites over the period of 2005-2014 on three different substrates in three areas under study: Sivash Gulf, the Kerch Strait and Cape Kazantip. In total, 200 taxa of algae were found, which belong to six taxonomic divisions with a predominance of diatoms. Among those, 108 taxa are indicators of substrate, water temperature, salinity, water pH, trophic state, the type of nutrition and organic pollution of water. It has been shown that the most active self-purification of water takes place in communities on stony substrates. The largest number of algae species (50%) occurs in the cleanest waters of the Kazantip Nature Reserve (Water Quality Classes I–II). The species composition of organic pollution indicators in Sivash Gulf corresponds to waters of Classes III–IV, which are more polluted than those of the Kerch Strait and Cape Kazantip. All the studied areas of the Sea of Azov are cleaner compared to some waters of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Sea of Japan.

As the result of the monitoring of the Klokovsky stream in s. Plekhanovo of Tula region in the sewage water of "Tulaelectroprivod" the individual living organisms (unicellular green algae and protozoa) were detected. The biological researches allow to revealing the a-mesosaprobic level of organic pollution of surface waters and sediments. The chemical analysis didn´t found inorganic pollutants, in particular heavy metals. Based on biotesting, the acute toxicity of surface water and sediments of the Klokovsky stream and fecal waters was found, caused by the presence of organic substances which are not detected by chemical methods. The research has shown that the surface water in the studied water flow is highly polluted and highly toxic. This ecosystem of the stream is close to destruction, as the trophic links and mechanisms of self-purification are disturbed. The atypical accumulation of organic matter is observed and there are a large number of bacteria, including pathogenic to humans. Thus, the Klokovsky stream and its coastal zone represent an area of intense ecological environment which may influence on human health. The danger is in contact with pathogenic microorganisms and organic substances in garden crops with irrigation water from this stream. There is a threat of the use in food of fish caught in the mouth areas of this watercourse. The consequences of such anthropogenic impacts affect the quality of drinking water. There is the possibility of contamination of the aquifer surface water streams by filtering them through the alluvial deposits of riverbed.

The relevance of the problem consists in the need to achieve a "good status" of water in the rivers of Ukraine according to the objectives of the Water Framework Directive. The aim of the work is to identify the main trends of water quality changes over time and along the length of Siverskyi Donets River based on data of the hydrochemical observations for the period from 1985 to 2015 inclusive. To establish the water quality we used integral assessments based on hydrochemical indicators such as pollution coefficient, water pollution index, generalized index of water state in accordance with the water quality standards for fishery. The article shows that use of mandatory (priority) chemical indicators in the calculations of the pollution coefficient and the water pollution index does not reflect a real degree of water pollution, since it does not take into account a significant amount of pollutants. It was discovered that major pollutants in the main river include suspended substances, chromium, nitrite nitrogen, phenols, sulfates. For the right-bank tributaries of Siversky Donets (illustrated by the example of the Kryvyi Torets River) originating from Donetsk Upland heavy metals (chromium, copper, zinc) pollution is typical. The degree of pollution based on the coefficient of pollution for average multi-year period is deemed as catastrophic, and based on the index of water pollution it is labelled with IV (contaminated) and V (very contaminated) quality classes indicating a violation of the ecosystem stability. Based on the generalized index, the water is also classified as "contaminated". The calculations based on various integral indicators of water quality revealed that pollution of the Siversky Donets River increases downstream. This is due to growing anthropogenic impact (municipal and industrial waters of large cities, discharge of mine and open pit waters into surface waterways, withdrawal of the runoff for its redirection to canals and water conduits, presence of diffuse sources of pollution by biogenic and organic substances). The beginning of the 21st century saw a trend towards improvement established in the chronological course of integral indicators of water quality which was associated with decrease production volumes. According to the generalized index of water state the water quality of the main river gradually changes from “contaminated” and “very contaminated” to “moderately contaminated”, but contamination by heavy metals, biogenic and organic substances remains high.

Introduction. The paper explores the long-term spatial and temporal variability of the chemical composition and water quality in the Kuban River. Methods. To study the variability of the chemical composition of river water, we analyzed data from systematic observations over the concentrations of major ions, biogenic and organic substances, petroleum products and heavy metals from 2010 to 2017. To describe the variability of water quality, we used such indicators as water quality class, water pollution level, and characteristic pollutants. Results. It is shown that the spatial change in the chemical composition is uneven — a number of components in the water have low concentrations in the upper reaches, increasing in the lower part of the river. Others are characterized by high concentrations in the middle reaches, followed by a decrease towards the mouth. Over time, the change in the concentrations of chlorides, sulfates, organic substances and petroleum products increases. As for the content of nitrates, a slight decrease was detected in its variability. For the remaining chemicals, there were no clear trends. We established that in most cases the water in the Kuban River can be classified as polluted and very polluted (water quality class 3). We also found that the nature of river water pollution regarding a number of components is stable. Conclusion. In modern conditions of sharp climate changes and anthropogenic impact, the identified features of the chemical composition and trends in water quality variability of the Kuban River are of great practical importance and can be used in the development of environmentally sound recommendations for improving water quality and the state of water ecosystems in the river basin.

An attempt was made to evaluate the suitability of using mollusc populations from the family Cardiidae as a biological indicator to monitor ecological water quality in the north-western part of the Sea of Azov. It is known that some qualitative indices of mollusc populations reflect large-scale changes occurring in benthos communities of the region. In this research, the monitoring of aquatic organisms was carried out using such indices as population density, age distribution dynamics, characteristics of behaviour, etc. Temporal and spatial dynamics of these indices allow the detection of changes in environmental factors which in their turn determine basic and crucial functions of water bodies. Among other molluscs, representatives of the family Cardiidae stand out for their ability of rapid occupation of new locations (due to the presence of a pelagic larval stage), and their adult individuals are rather tolerant to fluctuations in salinity and other factors. The aim of this research was to reveal the variability range for basic qualitative characteristics of bivalve populations in the north-western part of the Sea of Azov and to estimate if these molluscs are suitable to be bioindicators of the environmental status of the region.

Heavy metals (HM) are among the most hazardous soil pollutants. The intensity of accumulation and distribution of HM in soils directly depends on the ecological conditions of pedogenesis and its buffering properties. At the same time, a significant accumulation of HM in the soil as a result of anthropogenic impacts reduces the buffering capacity of the soil and its resistance to pollution. The purpose of this work was to assess the buffering capacity of soils to HM pollution in the Don River delta and the coast of the Taganrog Bay of the Sea of Azov undergoing the great anthropogenic impact. The buffer capacity of experimental soils was carried out using the Il’in’s method (1995), based on the calculation of the inactivation ability of soils: organic matter, clay fraction (particle size < 0.01 mm), carbonates, sesquioxides, and pH. The content of HM was compared with soil Clarke and the maximum permissible concentration of HM in soils accepted in the Russian Federation. It was found that the experimental soils could be ordered by buffer capacity value as following (in decreasing order): haplic chernozem ≥ alluvial-meadow light loamy ≥ solonchak > alluvial-meadow sandy and sandy loamy > sandy primitive soil ≥ stratified alluvial soil. As a result of laboratory cultivation of bottom sediment samples taken during six expeditions at oceanographic stations of the coastal waters of the Black and Azov Seas located along the coast of Crimea in different seasons of 2019‒2020, preliminary results on the distribution of cyanobacteria in the benthos of these areas were obtained. The development of cultivated forms of cyanobacteria was observed in 65 Black Sea samples at 54 stations and in all samples from the Sea of Azov. In the benthos of the Black and Azov Seas areas, representatives of 11 and 10 genera of cyanobacteria were identified, respectively, belonging to four orders: Synechococcales (Synechococcus, Rhabdoderma, Aphanocapsa, Merismopedia, Leptolyngbya), Chroococcales (Microcystis, Chroococcus), Oscillatoriales (including Spirulina), Nostocales (Anabaena, Nostoc, Scytonema). Representatives of the genus Microcystis were the most common in the bottom sediments of the Black Sea coast of Crimea, whereas in the Sea of Azov they were Microcystis and Oscillatoriales. Cyanobacteria with a deep violet color were often found, which indicates the predominance of phycoerythrin in the pigment complex of these cyanobacteria. The maximum number of cultivated forms of cyanobacteria in the bottom sediments of the Black Sea during the entire study period was registered in the euphotic zone, and the lowest – in the 100–1000 m zone. 40 batch cultures were obtained, from which new strains of cyanobacteria are be isolated. In the future, the research results can be used to monitor the ecological state of the coastal waters, while the isolated cyanobacteria strains can also be used for genetic, biotechnological, medical and other research.
