Age and growth of the deep water mud shrimp Solenocera melantho (De Man, 1907) was estimated using von Bertalanffy growth model employing modal progression analysis, Ford-Walford method for L∞ and K and t0 by Gulland’s method as well as ELEFAN I (FiSAT II software version 1.2.2) method. The growth parameters estimated by the former method were: L∞= 107.9 mm, K = 2.61 y-1, t0 = 0.1344, φ’ = 4.4825 for males and L∞ = 116.4 mm, K = 3.69 y-1, t0 = 0.1346, φ’ = 4.6997 for females and by the latter method were : L∞ = 106.1 mm, K = 2.17 y-1, t0 = -0.05, φ’ = 4.3879 for males and L∞ = 116.8 mm, K = 2.1 y-1, t0 = -0.05, φ’ = 4.4571 for females. The longevity estimated for both males and females of S. melantho was about 36 months. The females were observed to grow faster than the males.

AbstractDue to poorly mineralizing structures, ageing deep-water elasmobranchs requires nonconventional techniques. The aim of the present study was to develop a reliable ageing technique using the vertebral centrum to provide information about the age and growth parameters in the Goblin Shark, Mitsukurina owstoni (Jordan, 1898). One vertebral centrum from an individual measuring 315.2 cm in total length was analysed. A minimum age of 27 years was estimated. By incorporating priors based on the growth of deep-water sharks and an additional likelihood on L∞ using data on large male Goblin Sharks, a Bayesian von Bertalanffy growth model was estimated with a male L∞ of 364 cm total length, weigh 215 kg at L∞, grow slowly with a k equal to 0.049, mature at 16.5 years, and live up to 55 years. Our results are essential to provide useful life history information, with the aim of elucidating the cryptic ecology and biology of this deep-water shark.

Short Communication: Age and growth of elongated mudskipper, Pseudapocryptes elongatus (Cuvier, 1816) from Sundarbans, India. Biodiversitas 20: 85-90. The estimation of age and mathematical expression of fish growth is complex and debated subject in fishery sciences. Growth parameters of elongated mudskipper, Pseudapocryptes elongatus were estimated based on the length frequency data using FiSAT II software (several tools such as Powell-Wetherall method, ELEFAN and von Bertalanffy growth estimates). Samples were collected from Sundarbans mangroves using gill and cast nets and by hand picking. The length-frequency (LFQ) of P.elongatus was recorded from January 2014 to December 2015 and the above tools estimated the growth parameters (L∞, K and t0) from the progression of LFQ modes through time. L∞ and K values of males were 220.50 mm and 1.3 yr-1, respectively and similarly, L∞ and K values of females were 221.05 mm and 1.21 yr-1, respectively. The t0 values estimated for males and females were-0.1915 years and-0.1661 years, respectively. The estimated growth performance index (Φ) values for males and females of P. elongatus were 4.394 and 4.503, respectively. The lifespan of both the sexes was found to be 4+ years.


<em>Abstract.</em>—The red snapper, <em>Lutjanus campechanus</em>, is one of the most economically important fish species in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM). Concerns over the declines in red snapper landings during the 1980s in the GOM exposed the paucity of information regarding the species’ age, growth, and population dynamics, all fundamental in fisheries management. This paper reviews the history of red snapper age and growth research in the GOM demonstrating an evolution of fisheries aging and validation techniques. These refinements in aging over time have also impacted management of the red snapper stock in the GOM. Also discussed are efforts to standardize aging techniques throughout the GOM in an effort to improve data accuracy. A number of studies have used the von Bertalanffy growth model to describe a pattern of rapid growth followed by slower growth after the age of ten years for red snapper in the GOM. Additional applications of the von Bertalanffy growth model have also been applied to corroborate red snapper age estimates derived from sectioned otoliths and to discern demographic differences in red snapper growth throughout the GOM.

Age and growth of C. porosus was estimated from seasonally formed marks in vertebrae of 504 specimens (30.0–101.0 cm total length), and from length–frequency data from 1128 individuals (29.4–120.5 cm). Estimated von Bertalanffy growth parameters were: from observed length-at-age, L∞ 125.1 cm, K 0.101 year-1 and t0 –2.89 year; from back-calculated lengths, L∞ 136.4 cm, K 0.077 year-1, t0 –3.27 year; and from length–frequency analysis, L∞ 131.0, K 0.080 and t0 –3.40. Growth did not differ significantly between sexes. Males and females were mature at 71.0 and 70.0 cm, respectively, corresponding to 6 years old. The largest shark aged from vertebrae was a 12-year-old female (101.0 cm). Growth rates calculated from mean observed lengths were 7.0 cm year-1 for the first four years and 4.0 cm year-1 after maturity. Lee’s phenomenon was not apparent. The annulus forms from September to January. Parameters derived from back-calculated lengths were considered to best describe growth. Like most carcharhinids, C. porosus follows the general pattern of K-selected species, exhibiting slow growth, late maturity and low fecundity. Resumo. A idade e o crescimento de C. porosus foram estimados a partir de marcas sazonais em vértebras de 504 indivíduos (30.0–101.0 cm comprimento total) e através de distribuição de freqÜências de comprimentos de 1128 indivíduos (29.4–120.5 cm). Os parâmetros de von Bertalanffy obtidos com comprimentos observados na captura foram: L∞ 125.1 cm, K 0.101 ano –1 e t0 –2.89 anos; com comprimentos retrocalculados: L∞ 136.4 cm, K 0.077 ano-1, t0 –3.27 anos, e da distribuição de freqÜências de comprimentos obteve-se: L∞ 131.0 cm, K 0.080 ano-1 e t0 –3.40. O crescimento não difere entre sexos. Machos e fêmeas são maduras com 71 e 70 cm, respectivamente, correspondendo a idade de 6 anos. O maior espécime cuja idade foi estimada das vértebras tinha 12 anos (101.0 cm). As taxas de crescimento calculadas dos comprimentos médios observados foram 7.0 cm ano-1 para os primeiros quatro anos e 4.0 cm ano-1 após a maturidade. O fenômeno de Lee não ocorreu. O anel se forma entre setembro e janeiro. Os parâmetros obtidos do retroclculo descreveram melhor o crescimento. Como muitos carcharhinideos, C. porosus segue o padrão das espécies da seleção K, exibindo crescimento lento, maturidade tardia e baixa fecundidade.

Growth models estimate life history parameters (e.g., growth rates and asymptotic size) that are used in the management of fisheries stocks. Traditionally in fisheries science, it was common to fit one growth model—the von Bertalanffy growth model—to size-at-age data. However, in recent years, fisheries science has seen an increase in the number of growth models available and the evaluation of multiple growth models for a given species or study. We reviewed n = 196 peer-reviewed age and growth studies and n = 50 NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) regional stock assessments to examine trends in the use of growth models and model selection in fisheries over time. Our results indicate that the total number of age and growth studies increased annually since 1988 with a slight proportional increase in the use of multi-model frameworks. Information theoretic approaches are replacing goodness-of-fit and a priori model selection in fisheries studies; however, this trend is not reflected in NOAA stock assessments, which almost exclusively rely on the von Bertalanffy growth model. Covariates such as system (e.g., marine or fresh), location of study, diet, family, maximum age, and range of age data used in model fitting did not contribute to which model was ultimately the best fitting, suggesting that there are no large-scale patterns of specific growth models being applied to species with common life histories or other attributes. Given the importance and ubiquity of growth modeling to fisheries science, a historical and contemporary understanding of the practice is critical to evaluate improvements that have been made and future challenges.

The Coad barb, Capoeta coadi Alwan, Zareian and Esmaeili, 2016, is a newly described endemic fish in Beheshtabad River, Tigris basin of Iran and little is known about its life-history. Life history characteristics were examined in 426 specimens collected monthly from Beheshtabad River (central Iran) during May 2013 to May 2014. The sex ratio was 1M:0.7F. Based on scale and opercular readings, the maximum ages of the population were 8+ years for females and 7+ for males. The most frequent age groups were 3+ and 4+ in males and females, respectively. Size varied from 8.94 to 42.95 cm in fork length and weight between 10.3 and 1255.5 g. Length–weight relationship implied that the growth was negatively allometric for both sexes. The von Bertalanffy growth model was estimated as Lt =35.97[1‑e‑0.205( t+0.586)] and Lt = 49.31[1‑e ‑0.162( t‑0.208)] for males and females, respectively. The growth performance index was estimated as 5.58 and 5.97 for males and females, respectively, indicating a faster growth rate for females.

The large scale barb, Capoeta aculeata is a little known species native to Iran. Its age and growth were studied in 377 specimens collected monthly from the Gizehrud River in Lorestan Province (Tigris basin) during May 2014–May 2015. Sex ratio was 1M:2.1F. The maximum age of both female and male specimens was 6+ years. The most common age group of both male and female fish was 4+. The fork length ranged from 12.2 to 20.8 cm (17.4 ± 1.2SD) and weight from 32 to 188 g (93.6 ± 21.8SD). The estimated length-weight relationship of male specimens was W = 0.0161FL3.012, (r2 = 0.82) and that of female specimens W = 0.0248FL2.87, (r2 = 0.79). This relationship showed that growth of both Capoeta aculeata sexes was isometric. The estimated von Bertalanffy growth model for males was Lt= 20.9[1-e-0.57(t+0.2)] and for females Lt = 20.3[1-e-0.56(t-0.8)]. The growth performance index was estimated at 5.4 and 5.5 for males and females, respectively, indicating a similar growth rate for both sexes.

AbstractAge and growth parameters were estimated for the deep-sea cardinalfish (Epigonus crassicaudus) from sagittal otoliths collected between 2012 and 2015 onboard commercial fishing vessels from the South-east Pacific off Chile between 33°04′S and 41°46′S. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters (VBGP) were estimated from assumed annual otolith growth zone counts. The verification of the first annulus of sagittal otoliths was determined by examining in detail daily micro-increments. These data helped inform the interpretation of the annual growth zones from transverse otolith sections. The von Bertalanffy growth model estimated to length-at-age data were asymptotic length (L∞) of 34.1 cm fork length (FL), a growth coefficient (k) of 0.1 cm/year and a t-zero (t0) of −0.85. The maximum ages observed were 67 and 65 years for female and male fish, respectively.

Population dynamic and stock assessment aspects of Selaroides leptolepis species in Tomini Bay have not been entirely reported. This study aimed to determine the fishing mortality rate and exploitation status of S. leptolepis in Tomini Bay by calculating Von Bertalanffy growth model parameters (L∞, K, t0) then plotting them into Pauly's empirical equation. The sampling was conducted monthly from April to September 2020 at Gorontalo City Fishing Port. Samples were collected randomly from five commercial fishing vessels shortly after the fishermen landed their catch at the fishing port. All fish samples were confirmed to be obtained by the fishermen from Tomini waters. The growth parameters of the samples were analyzed using FiSAT II based on Von Bertalanffy mathematical model. While the mortality and exploitation values were calculated manually using Pauly's equation. The study showed that the growth parameter values of S. leptolepis in Tomini Bay were 245.47 mm, 0.49/year, and -3.04/year for males, while 227.80 mm, 0.63/year, and -2.72/year for females separately for L∞, K, and t0. The total, natural, and fishing mortality rates were 3.06/year, 0.61/year, and 2.45/year for males and 0.99/year, 0.74/year, and 0.25/year for females. The analysis results showed that the female's natural mortality (M) was higher than the male. In contrast, the fishing mortality (F) and total mortality (Z) of male fish exceed the female. The exploitation value of males (E=0.80) was greater than that of females (E=0.26).

Age and length data of 291 franciscana dolphins (Pontoporia blainvillei) incidentally captured on the coast of Rio Grande do Sul State (RS), southern Brazil, were used to fit growth curves using Gompertz and Von Bertalanffy growth models. A small sample of franciscanas (N = 35) from Buenos Aires Province (BA), Argentina, were used to see if there are apparent growth differences between the populations. Male and female franciscana samples from both areas were primarily (78–85%) <4 years of age. The Von Bertalanffy growth model with a data set that excluded animals <1 year of age provided the best fit to data. Based on this model, dolphins from the RS population reached asymptotic length at 136.0 cm and 158.4 cm, for males and females, respectively. No remarkable differences were observed in the growth trajectories of males and females between the RS and BA populations.
