Age determination and growth of the smalltail shark, Carcharhinus porosus, from northern Brazil

Age and growth of C. porosus was estimated from seasonally formed marks in vertebrae of 504 specimens (30.0–101.0 cm total length), and from length–frequency data from 1128 individuals (29.4–120.5 cm). Estimated von Bertalanffy growth parameters were: from observed length-at-age, L∞ 125.1 cm, K 0.101 year-1 and t0 –2.89 year; from back-calculated lengths, L∞ 136.4 cm, K 0.077 year-1, t0 –3.27 year; and from length–frequency analysis, L∞ 131.0, K 0.080 and t0 –3.40. Growth did not differ significantly between sexes. Males and females were mature at 71.0 and 70.0 cm, respectively, corresponding to 6 years old. The largest shark aged from vertebrae was a 12-year-old female (101.0 cm). Growth rates calculated from mean observed lengths were 7.0 cm year-1 for the first four years and 4.0 cm year-1 after maturity. Lee’s phenomenon was not apparent. The annulus forms from September to January. Parameters derived from back-calculated lengths were considered to best describe growth. Like most carcharhinids, C. porosus follows the general pattern of K-selected species, exhibiting slow growth, late maturity and low fecundity. Resumo. A idade e o crescimento de C. porosus foram estimados a partir de marcas sazonais em vértebras de 504 indivíduos (30.0–101.0 cm comprimento total) e através de distribuição de freqÜências de comprimentos de 1128 indivíduos (29.4–120.5 cm). Os parâmetros de von Bertalanffy obtidos com comprimentos observados na captura foram: L∞ 125.1 cm, K 0.101 ano –1 e t0 –2.89 anos; com comprimentos retrocalculados: L∞ 136.4 cm, K 0.077 ano-1, t0 –3.27 anos, e da distribuição de freqÜências de comprimentos obteve-se: L∞ 131.0 cm, K 0.080 ano-1 e t0 –3.40. O crescimento não difere entre sexos. Machos e fêmeas são maduras com 71 e 70 cm, respectivamente, correspondendo a idade de 6 anos. O maior espécime cuja idade foi estimada das vértebras tinha 12 anos (101.0 cm). As taxas de crescimento calculadas dos comprimentos médios observados foram 7.0 cm ano-1 para os primeiros quatro anos e 4.0 cm ano-1 após a maturidade. O fenômeno de Lee não ocorreu. O anel se forma entre setembro e janeiro. Os parâmetros obtidos do retroclculo descreveram melhor o crescimento. Como muitos carcharhinideos, C. porosus segue o padrão das espécies da seleção K, exibindo crescimento lento, maturidade tardia e baixa fecundidade.

Short Communication: Age and growth of elongated mudskipper, Pseudapocryptes elongatus (Cuvier, 1816) from Sundarbans, India. Biodiversitas 20: 85-90. The estimation of age and mathematical expression of fish growth is complex and debated subject in fishery sciences. Growth parameters of elongated mudskipper, Pseudapocryptes elongatus were estimated based on the length frequency data using FiSAT II software (several tools such as Powell-Wetherall method, ELEFAN and von Bertalanffy growth estimates). Samples were collected from Sundarbans mangroves using gill and cast nets and by hand picking. The length-frequency (LFQ) of P.elongatus was recorded from January 2014 to December 2015 and the above tools estimated the growth parameters (L∞, K and t0) from the progression of LFQ modes through time. L∞ and K values of males were 220.50 mm and 1.3 yr-1, respectively and similarly, L∞ and K values of females were 221.05 mm and 1.21 yr-1, respectively. The t0 values estimated for males and females were-0.1915 years and-0.1661 years, respectively. The estimated growth performance index (Φ) values for males and females of P. elongatus were 4.394 and 4.503, respectively. The lifespan of both the sexes was found to be 4+ years.

Age and growth of the daggernose shark, Isogomphodon oxyrhynchus, from northern Brazil were determined from 105 vertebral sections stained with alizarin red-S representing 46 males, 52 females and 7 specimens of unknown sex (58.4 to 141 cm-TL) and verified with length–frequency analysis of 1135 specimens (632 females and 503 males, 58–160 cm ). Marginal increments did not show significant differences throughout the year, and it was assumed that one band is formed annually. Different tests provided varying results for growth curve comparisons between sexes; the curves were similar, despite biological differences. von Bertalanffy growth parameters estimated from back-calculated mean lengths, observed mean lengths-at-age and length–frequency analysis were of the same magnitude. Parameters generated from observed length-at-age were chosen for describing growth for the species: L• 171.4 cm, k 0.12 year –1 and t0 –2.612 years. The largest female aged from vertebrae was 12 years old, whereas the largest male was aged at 7 years. Neonates, ~42.3 cm, showed one band in the vertebrae, formed at birth, or soon thereafter. Males are mature at 103 cm or 5–6 years and females at 115 cm or 6–7 years. Resumo. A idade e o crescimento do cação quati, Isogomphodon oxyrhynchus, do norte do Brasil foi determinada usando 105 vértebras seccionadas e coradas com alizarina vermelha-S de 46 machos, 52 fêmeas e 7 exemplares de sexo indeterminado (58,4–141 cm-CT). Análise de distribuição de frequência de comprimentos de 1135 indivíduos (632 femeas e 503 machos, 58–160 cm) foi utilizada como método de verificação. Os incrementos marginais não mostraram diferenças significativas ao longo do ano, assumindo-se que uma banda é formada anualmente. Com diferentes testes, usados para comparar curvas de crescimento entre os sexos, obteve-se resultados conflitantes; o crescimento foi considerado idêntico entre os sexos, apesar das diferenças biológicas entre machos e fêmeas. Os parâmetros de von Bertalanffy estimados do retrocálculo, comprimentos médios observados e da análise de comprimentos foram semelhantes, tendo sido escolhidos para descrever o crescimento da espécie: L• 8171,4 cm; k 0,12 year –1 et 0 –2,612 years. Amaior fêmea cuja idade foi estimada pelas vértebras tinha 12 anos enquanto o maior macho tinha 7 anos. Recém-nascidos de 42,3 cm apresentavam uma banda nas vertebras, formada ao nascer, ou logo depois do nascimento. Machos estão maduros em 103 cm ou 5–6 anos e fêmeas em 115 cm ou 6–7 anos.

Age determination of gemfish by counting hyaline zones in otoliths was validated by following the progression of modes in length–frequency distributions and the progression of strong and weak year classes in age–frequency distributions. Length–frequency and otolith samples were examined from four areas (west Northland, east Northland and Bay of Plenty, Wairarapa coast, and the Stewart- Snares shelf). Age–frequency distributions and von Bertalanffy growth parameters were calculated and compared between areas. Two gemfish stocks are indicated on the basis of patterns of year class strengths, trends in commercial landings and likely spawning areas; one off the east and north of the North Island, and another off the west and south of the South Island. Estimates of natural mortality are presented for the two stocks.

The age and growth of Carcharhinus tilstoni and C. sorrah, the two most abundant shark species in commercial gill-net catches off northern Australia, were investigated by the examination of vertebral rings. Corroborating evidence for age and growth estimates was obtained from length-frequency distributions and tag-recapture data. To aid validation of these estimates, tetracycline was injected into sharks at the time of tagging. Growth is relatively rapid in the first year of life: vertebral ageing indicated 17 cm growth in total length (TL) for C. tilstoni and about 20 cm for C. sorrah during the first year after birth. By the time the sharks are 5 years old, growth has declined to 8-10 cm per year in C. tilsoni and 5 cm per year or less in C. sorrah. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters for C. tilstoni are L∞ = 194.2, K = 0.14, t0 = -2.8 for females, and L∞ = 165.4, K = 0.19, t0 = -2.6 for males; for C. sorrah the parameters are L∞ = 123.9, K = 0.34, t0 = -1.9 for females, and L∞ = 98.4, K = 1.17, t0 = -0.6 for males. The greatest recorded ages for C. tilstoni were 12 years for females and 8 years for males, and for C. sorrah, 7 years for females and 5 years for males. Sexual maturity is reached early: at 3 to 4 years in C. tilstoni and 2 to 3 years in female C. sorrah.

This study was carried out on age and growth of hilsa shad, Tenualosa ilisha in river Tentulia in Bhola district using monthly samples from January to December 2009 by checking annual rings or growth checks on hard parts. Age and growth of T. ilisha got progressed by direct fit of length frequency data both to standard and to modified von Bertalanffy growth models with ELEFAN I procedure where the predicted maximum total length were (TL∞) 41.88 cm for male and 52.40 cm for female. Powell-Wetherall procedure gave an initial asymptotic total length (TL∞) for both male and female 40.42 cm, 50.61 cm respectively. The values of Z/K were 3.362 for male and 2.626 for female. The growth co-efficient (K) was obtained as 1.40 year-1 for male and 1.00 year-1 for female. The von Bertalanffy growth equations in terms of body weight (BW) for both male and female were BWt=799.26[1-exp{-1.40(t+0.002)}]3 and BWt=1717.82[1-exp{-0.99(t+0.013)}]3 respectively. The length-weight relationship for both sexes were BW=0.0101 TL 3.02 for male and BW=0.0086 TL 3.08 for female. The value of coefficient of determination (R2) was estimated for both male and female species were 0.969 and 0.968.

Mark-recapture experiments, conducted near Groote Eylandt in the western Gulf of Carpentaria during 1984, were used to examine movements and growth of blue endeavour prawns, Metapenaeus endeavouri. The mean distance moved by tagged animals was only 12.7 (s.e.�1.0) km, but a few were recaptured > 100 km from their release sites. The mean time at liberty was 36.8 (�1.6) days, the maximum being 155 days. The distance and speed of movements were not related to the size or sex of tagged prawns. Nonuniform recapture patterns corresponded largely with fishing effort. Recaptures per unit effort (R/f analyses), used to account for nonuniform fishing effort, indicated that there was no directionality in movements. Thus, tagged specimens of M. endeavouri dispersed slowly across suitable adult habitat, with limited intermixing of adults from stocks around Groote Eylandt. Estimates of the von Bertalanffy growth parameters L∞ and K for each sex were obtained for data from summer and winter releases. The fit of the von Bertalanffy model to summer data was limited by the small number of recaptures. The fit of the model to winter data was improved by removing early recaptures, and these estimates are presented as the primary descriptors of growth in M. endeavouri. Parameter estimates did not differ significantly between seasons, but L∞ differed between sexes and K differed between sexes in winter. Predicted growth corresponded to the progression of modes in length-frequency data from commercial catches.

The present study provides novel information on carapace width-weight (CWR) relationship and growth parameters of the mud crab Scylla olivacea (Herbst, 1796) inhabiting the Pichavaram mangroves, east coast of India based on length frequency data sets during June 2010 to May 2012. CWR revealed linear regression between carapace width and weight in both sexes, and overall CWR exponent (b) values acquired for males and females are 3.035 (r2 = 0.962) and 2.925 (r2 = 0.933) respectively. The growth parameters, CW∞, K and to derived for males and females were 148.05, 0.762 year−1 and −0.637 and 138.80 mm, 0.856 year−1 and −0.681 respectively. The growth of S. olivacea was assessed through various methods in such a way that the outcome of one method functions as a rider, check and control over the other.

Rig (Mustelus lenticulatus) specimens were aged by counting growth bands in whole vertebrae that were illuminated laterally with fibre-optic lights. Bands were counted by two readers who used information on the diameter of the vertebrae of new-born young and 1-year-old juveniles to identify the inner bands. The greatest estimated age was 12.1 years for a female of 137 cm total length, but few rig were more than 8 years old. For west coast South Island (WCSI) rig, there was no significant difference in growth rates of males and females. After pooling both sexes, there was no significant difference in growth rates between WCSI and east coast South Island (ECSI) rig. The combined WCSI and ECSI von Bertalanffy growth curve was Lt = 147.2 (1 – e −0.119[t + 2.35]). This curve agreed well with growth curves derived from length–frequency data, but validation of the ageing technique is still required. WCSI males mature at ~85 cm and 5–6 years, and females at ~100 cm and 7–8 years. ECSI rig probably mature at similar lengths and ages. Tagged rig have been recaptured after nearly 14 years at liberty. Longevity probably exceeds 15 years, and may exceed 20 years.

Age and growth of the deep water mud shrimp Solenocera melantho (De Man, 1907) was estimated using von Bertalanffy growth model employing modal progression analysis, Ford-Walford method for L∞ and K and t0 by Gulland’s method as well as ELEFAN I (FiSAT II software version 1.2.2) method. The growth parameters estimated by the former method were: L∞= 107.9 mm, K = 2.61 y-1, t0 = 0.1344, φ’ = 4.4825 for males and L∞ = 116.4 mm, K = 3.69 y-1, t0 = 0.1346, φ’ = 4.6997 for females and by the latter method were : L∞ = 106.1 mm, K = 2.17 y-1, t0 = -0.05, φ’ = 4.3879 for males and L∞ = 116.8 mm, K = 2.1 y-1, t0 = -0.05, φ’ = 4.4571 for females. The longevity estimated for both males and females of S. melantho was about 36 months. The females were observed to grow faster than the males.

Age and growth of the sandbar shark (Carcharhinus plumbeus) was determined from rings in the vertebrae of 475 individuals, tagging data from 220 sharks at liberty for up to 17 yr, and length–frequency data from 2594 individuals. The oldest male sandbar aged in this study was 15 yr old and 154 cm fork length (FL); the oldest female was 21 yr old and 204 cm FL. The sexes grew at similar rates, 5.2–7.3 cm/yr. Females reached a larger adult size. Age to maturity was estimated at 13 yr in males and 12 yr in females. Tag returns indicated that sandbar sharks may live for over 30 yr. von Bertalanffy parameters for males are L∞ = 257, K = 0.0501, t0 = −4.5 and for females are L∞ = 299, K = 0.040, t0 = −4.9.
