We identified the key genes controlling the late maturation of the Japonica cultivar Isehikari, which was found at Ise Jingu Shrine and matures 6 days later than Koshihikari. We conducted a genetics-based approach through this study. First, the latest mature plants, which flowered later than Isehikari, were segregated in the F2 and F3 generations of Koshihikari×Isehikari. Next, the linkage relationship of a single late-maturing gene with the SSR markers on the long arm of chromosome 3 was inferred by using late-maturing homozygous F2 segregants. Moreover, genetic analyses of late maturity were conducted through the process of six times of continuous backcross with Koshihikari as a recurrent parent by using the late-maturing homozygous F3 line as a nonrecurrent parent, thus developing a late-maturing isogenic Koshihikari (BC6F2). As a result, we elucidated a single late-maturing gene with incomplete dominance that caused the 14-day maturation delay of Koshihikari. The whole-genome sequencing was conducted on both of Koshihikari and the late-maturing isogenic Koshihikari. Then, the SNP call was conducted as the reference genome of Koshihikari. Finally, a single SNP was identified in the key gene Hd16 of the late-maturing isogenic Koshihikari.

Abstract Main conclusion A comprehensive understanding of LMA from the underlying molecular aspects to the end-use quality effects will greatly benefit the global wheat industry and those whose livelihoods depend upon it. Abstract Late-maturity α-amylase (LMA) leads to the expression and protein accumulation of high pI α-amylases during late grain development. This α-amylase is maintained through harvest and leads to an unacceptable low falling number (FN), the wheat industry’s standard measure for predicting end-use quality. Unfortunately, low FN leads to significant financial losses for growers. As a result, wheat researchers are working to understand and eliminate LMA from wheat breeding programs, with research aims that include unraveling the genetic, biochemical, and physiological mechanisms that lead to LMA expression. In addition, cereal chemists and quality scientists are working to determine if and how LMA-affected grain impacts end-use quality. This review is a comprehensive overview of studies focused on LMA and includes open questions and future directions.

<p>This study provides the first comprehensive description of the demographics of lucifer dogfish (Etmopterus lucifer) from the Chatham Rise, New Zealand during January 2012. Lucifer dogfish is a non-QMS species commonly taken as bycatch in New Zealand deepwater trawl fisheries, where it has low commercial value and is usually discarded. Sexual maturity of females was determined by assessing the condition of the ovary and uterus, and the width of the uterus and oviducal gland. Male maturity was assessed by determining clasper and testes condition, inner clasper length, testes length, and testes weight. A sample of lucifer dogfish was aged by counting growth bands on the internal section of the dorsal fin spine (n = 97), assuming annual deposition of bands. Intra- and inter-reader bias in age estimates was estimated, but count precision was high within (CV = 12.71 %) and between reader age estimates (11.98 %). A number of growth models were fitted to the length-at-age data, including the traditional and modified Von Bertalanffy growth formula (VBGF) and four cases of the Schnute growth model. Selection of the best growth model was based on the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC). The fourth case of the Schnute growth model best represented growth. Lucifer dogfish had an estimated age and length at maturity of 10.4 years and 34.0 cm respectively for males, and 13.0 years and 41.0 cm for females. The oldest observed fish were 17 and 14 years for males and females respectively. The total mortality estimates were in the range of 0.14 to 0.35 yr ⁻¹. Lucifer dogfish fed primarily upon mesopelagic fishes, with Hector’s lanternfish (Lampanyctodes hectoris) identified as being the most common prey. Lucifer dogfish had late maturity relative to its longevity. Although sampling of the population was likely to be incomplete, and biases in age estimates may have occurred, these observed life history characteristics indicate that productivity will be low, and as a consequence, the precautionary approach should be applied, as the potential impact of commercial fishing on this species is high.</p>

The existing spring forms of wheat-rye amphiploids are characterized by late maturity due to the long duration of the interphase period “germination–heading”. The manifestation of this trait is influenced by Vrn-1 genes. Their dominant alleles also determine the spring type of development. The results of studying the interphase period “germination–heading” of spring octaploid and hexaploid forms of triticale created for use in research and breeding programs under the conditions of forest-steppe of Western Siberia are given in this article. The interphase period of the primary forms 8xVrnA1, 8xVrnB1 and 8xVrnD1 obtained by artificial doubling of the chromosome number of the wheat-rye hybrids made by pollination of three lines of the soft wheat ‘Triple Dirk’ – donors of different dominant Vrn-1 genes – by a winter rye variety ‘Korotkostebel’naya 69’ was determined under the field conditions in the nursery of octaploid (8x) triticale. In the nursery of hexaploid triticale, this trait was studied in the populations of hybrids obtained by hybridization of these three primary forms of octaploid triticale with the hexaploid winter triticale variety ‘Sears 57’. In the offspring of crossing 8хVrnD1× ‘Sears 57’, spring genotypes of 6x triticale bearing Vrn-D1 were selected. This fact was determined by PСR. It means that the genetic material from the chromosome of the fifth homeologous group of the D genome of the bread wheat is included in the plant genotypes. This genome is absent in the winter 6x triticale ‘Sears 57’. The grain content of spikes of the created hexaploid forms of triticale is superiour to that of the maternal octaploid triticale forms. It was shown that plants of the hybrid populations 8xVrnA1× ‘Sears 57’ and 8xVrnD1× ‘Sears 57’ carrying the dominant alleles Vrn-A1a and Vrn-D1a, respectively, have a shorter duration of the “germination–heading” interphase period than the initial parental forms of primary 8x triticale. The short interphase period of “germination–heading” of the 6x triticale is a valuable breading trait for the creation of early maturing and productive genotypes of triticale.

An olive breeding program was started in Tunisia in 1993 in order mainly to improve the fatty acid composition of the local cultivar ‘Chemlali Sfax’. ‘Zeitoun Ennour’ is a new cultivar obtained from a cross between ‘Chemlali Sfax’ and the local dual-purpose use cultivar ‘Chemchali Gafsa’. The morphological study of this cultivar showed that eleven characters dealing with fruit and endocarp differed from ‘Chemlali Sfax’, mainly regarding to their respective weights. This new cultivar had the same sensitivity to Verticillium dahliae Kleb and earlier bearing than the original variety. Its olive production was considered as high as for ‘Chemlali Sfax’ but with partial self-compatibility and late maturity. The new cultivar realized a net improvement in comparison with the original cultivar particularly regarding its fatty acid composition with very high oleic acid content (>75 %) and low palmitic and linoleic acid contents (<10 %). The new cultivar was recently released and will be available for growers as soon as possible.

MicroRNAs fine-tune plant growth and resistance against multiple biotic and abiotic stresses. The trade-off between biomass and resistance can penalize crop yield. In this study, we have shown that rice miR530 regulates blast disease resistance, yield, and growth period. While the overexpression of miR530 results in compromised blast disease resistance, reduced grain yield, and late maturity, blocking miR530 using a target mimic (MIM530) leads to enhanced resistance, increased grain yield, and early maturity. Further study revealed that the accumulation of miR530 was decreased in both leaves and panicles along with the increase of age. Such expression patterns were accordant with the enhanced resistance from seedlings to adult plants, and the grain development from panicle formation to fully-filled seeds. Divergence analysis of miR530 precursor with upstream 1,000-bp promoter sequence in 11 rice species revealed that miR530 was diverse in Oryza sativa japonica and O. sativa indica group, which was consistent with the different accumulation of miR530 in japonica accessions and indica accessions. Altogether, our results indicate that miR530 coordinates rice resistance, yield, and maturity, thus providing a potential regulatory module for breeding programs aiming to improve yield and disease resistance.
