In internet market, content providers (CPs) continue to play a primordial role in the process of accessing different types of data. Competition in this area is fierce; customers are looking for providers that offer them good content (credibility of content and quality of service) with a reasonable price. In this work, the authors analyze this competition between CPs and the economic influence of their strategies on the market. The authors formulate their problem as a non-cooperative game among multiple CPs for the same market. Through a detailed analysis, the researchers prove uniqueness of a pure Nash Equilibrium (NE). Furthermore, a fully distributed algorithm to converge on the NE point is presented. In order to quantify how efficient the NE point is, a detailed analysis of the Price of Anarchy (PoA) is adopted to ensure the performance of the system at equilibrium. Finally, an extensive numerical study is provided to describe the interactions between CPs and to point out the importance of quality of service (QoS) and credibility of content in the market.

High performance heat exchangers represent nowadays the key of success to go on with the trend of miniaturizing electronic components as requested by the industry. This numerical study, based on Bejan’s Constructal theory, analyzes the thermal behavior of heat removing fin modules, comparing their performances when operating with different types of fluids. In particular, the simulations involve air and water (as representative of gases and liquids), to understand the actual benefits of employing a less heat conductive fluid involving smaller pressure losses or vice versa. The analysis parameters typical of a Constructal description (such as conductance or Overall Performance Coefficient) show that significantly improved performances may be achieved when using water, even if an unavoidable increase in pressure losses affects the liquid-refrigerated case. Considering the overall performance: if the parameter called Relevance tends to 0, air prevails; if it tends to 1, water prevails; if its value is about 0.5, water prevails in most of the case studies.

This paper presents an experimental assessment of the Tip Excitation Technique (TET) introduced in a companion paper. The aim of the technique is to measure the rotational compliance of attached plane structures. Following the guidelines established on the basis of a numerical study in the companion paper, experimental measurements were performed on a rectangular plate and results were compared with numerical simulations. The investigation focuses on the general performance of the technique, on the different types of excitation used and on other factors necessary to ensure accurate results. In addition, an error analysis is conducted to demonstrate the sensitivity of the results to biased measurement quantities. It is concluded that the proposed technique can be used in the low to middle frequency range, where relatively strong modal behavior is involved.

Centrifugal blood pumps have to be considered from both mechanical and biomechanical aspects. While, evaluations of mechanical factors, such as performance curve, are straightforward, biomechanical parameters, such as hemolysis indices, are still indistinct. Hence, different mathematical models and computational methods have been employed for the evaluation of hemolysis indices. This article aims to investigate four different types of centrifugal blood pumps from both mechanical and biomechanical aspects. The pumps are cone-type impeller (Type-A), channel-type impeller with shroud (Type-B), open impeller without shroud (Type-C) and shrouded impeller-type (Type-D). The CFD simulations are conducted using standard k-ε turbulence model in multiple reference frame (MRF) method. Various values for rotational speed and flow rate are studied. The streamlines clearly show the effects of impeller geometry on flow patterns. It is also demonstrated that in all of the models, the areas of the recirculation have high value of von Mises stress. In addition, the effect of the volute in the Type-D on the pressure distribution and streamline smoothness is clearly observed. In another part, the modified index of hemolysis (MIH) calculated based on Eulerian approach is investigated for three predefined conditions of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), ventricular assist device (VAD), and full-load. The results reveal that the Type-A and Type-D have the highest and lowest MIH values, respectively in all of the predefined conditions. In addition, all of the pumps generate lower amount of hemolysis when they are operated in VAD condition.

Abstract In this contribution, a combined experimental and numerical study to assess the cracking resistance of cement-based materials subjected to desiccation is outlined. Experimentally, the tendency to hygral cracking is determined by means of mortar ring specimens exposed to drying atmosphere. A numerical model based on the nonlinear theory of diffusion and nonlinear fracture mechanics is developed. The relevant hygral and mechanical parameters and laws needed for the model have been determined by means of adequate experiments analyzed by inverse analyses. The hygro-mechanical behaviour of two different types of mortar is studied. Numerical results have been compared to experimental findings. Furthermore, a parametric study has been carried out with the aim to characterize the relevant material parameters influencing shrinkage cracking. It can be concluded that a combination of experimental and numerical methods can play a decisive role in optimizing mortars or concretes with respect to predefined and required material properties. In this way, the durability of concrete structures can be significantly enhanced.

We studied numerically impingement of vertical liquid jets of moderate Reynolds number for both Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquids to clarify the structure formation of circular hydraulic jump and the phenomenon of jet buckling. First, we have studied the hydraulic jump characteristics and governing parameters for a laminar water jet. Moreover, different types of hydraulic jump have been investigated by varying the height of a circular wall around the bed in flow downstream. The results show that a circular hydraulic jump has two kinds of steady states which can be reached by changing wall height. Next, we studied the impingement of a non-Newtonian liquid jet on a solid surface. In this case, we observe that instead of having a significant hydraulic jump, jet buckling phenomenon happens. The results were used in order to achieve a better understanding of the jet buckling phenomenon and the conditions in which this phenomenon happens.
