Abstract Background: Hypertriglyceridemia-induced acute pancreatitis during pregnancy (HTG-APP) is a rare but severe disease with high maternal-fetal mortality risk, which constitutes a systemic inflammatory process accompanied by thrombosis and bleeding disorders. However, the role of mean platelet volume (MPV) in HTG-APP remains unclear.Methods: In the retrospective study, we collected 45 patients with HTG-APP as the HTG-APP group and 49 pregnant females with hypertriglyceridemia as the control group. MPV and other relevant variables at onset and remission were collected and compared. Results: MPV were significantly higher in the HTG-APP group than in the control group (P < 0.001), and lower in remission than on onset (P = 0.002). According to the severity of acute pancreatitis, all subjects were classified into mild AP (MAP), moderately severe AP (MSAP), and severe AP (SAP) groups. There was a significant difference in MPV on onset among the three groups (P = 0.048), and the SAP patients had the highest levels of MPV. In addition, only in the SAP group, MPV was lower in remission than on onset (P = 0.010). Logistic regression analyses revealed that MPV was significantly associated with SAP (odds ratio = 2.077, 95% confdence interval, 1.038-4.154; P = 0.039). Conclusions: These results may indicate an important role of mean platelet volume in evaluating the severity of HTG-APP.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic role of mean platelet volume (MPV) for acute appendicitis. Methods: Patient files were retrospectively observed. MPV of 311 patients with pathological diagnosis of acute appendicitis were compared with the MPV of 314 healthy children (blood samples were taken for elective operations). SPSS (IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 20.0. Armonk, NY: IBM Corp.) was used to evaluate the results. Results: 188 of acute appendicitis were male (%60.5). Mean age of acute appendicitis group was 10.22±3.83. MPV of children with the diagnosis of acute appendicitis (8.37±0.83fL) and the control group (10.55±0.83fL). MPV values were statistically different between the acute appendicitis and control group (p<0,001). Conclusion: MPV may be used as a marker for the diagnosis of acute appendicitis, but it is not a specific biomarker for appendicitis.

AbstractObjective:This study aimed to determine whether there was any relationship between tinnitus and mean platelet volume.Methods:This retrospective study was conducted between January 2013 and January 2014 in Ankara Atatürk Hospital and Ondokuz Mayıs University Hospital, Turkey, on a study group of 86 patients with tinnitus and a control group of 84 healthy subjects. Mean platelet volume was recorded and comparisons were made between the two groups.Results:Mean (± standard deviation) platelet volume was 7.67 ± 0.83 μm3 in the study group and 7.28 ± 0.56 μm3 in the control group. There was a statistically significant difference in mean platelet volume between the tinnitus patients and the healthy subjects (p < 0.05).Conclusion:The clinical findings indicated that tinnitus patients had a higher mean platelet volume than the healthy control subjects; however, the pathophysiological mechanism remains unclear.

<p>OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine whether it is possible to differentiate submucosal fibroids before interventional procedures based on mean platelet volume (MPV), in reproductive-age patients presenting with endometrial thickening and abnormal uterine bleeding.<br />STUDY DESIGN: This study included 581 reproductive-age women who underwent diagnostic procedures (curettage or operative hysteroscopy) and were subsequently divided into two groups based on clinico-pathological findings. The first group included those with benign endometrial pathology (control group, n=438), and the second group consisted of those with submucosal leiomyomas (n=143). The demographic characteristics and complete blood count (CBC) data of these patients were collected retrospectively, and comparisons were made between groups.<br />RESULTS: No statistically significant difference was found between the groups according to demographic features and CBC parameters such as hemoglobin levels and white blood count (p&gt;0,05). Platelet counts were significantly higher and MPV values were significantly lower in submucosal leiomyoma patients compared with the control subjects (p&lt;0,05).<br />CONCLUSIONS: MPV may be a useful predictive marker when differentiating submucosal leiomyoma from other benign causes of abnormal uterine bleeding. The ability to predict the possibility of the presence of submucosal leiomyoma before surgery can assist in determining the most appropriate type of invasive procedure.</p>

Introduction. Acute appendicitis is the leading cause of abdominal pain in children requiring emergency surgical intervention. The aim of this study is to investigate the diagnostic value of MPV in early diagnosis of acute appendicitis cases in pediatric age group.Methods. This study was performed retrospectively. Three hundred five patients operated on with the diagnosis of appendicitis and pathologically found to be acute appendicitis were classified as Group 1 and 305 healthy children were classified as control Group 2.Results. One hundred ninety-seven of 305 cases in Group 1 are males (64.6%), in Group 2, 151 of 305 cases are males (49.5%). The mean MPV in Group 1 was7.9±0.9(fL), and whereas in Group 2 was7.7±0.8(fL). There was no statistically significant difference regarding MPV values (P>0.05).Conclusion. In our study we detected that mean platelet volume has no diagnostic value in pediatric acute appendicitis cases.

Objective. To determine whether mean platelet volume (MPV) is an indicator of disease severity in ocular Behçet’s Disease (BD).Materials and Methods. The study population was 30 newly diagnosed ocular BD patients who presented with active uveitis. These patients had no past history of smoking, drug use, or systemic diseases including diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and renal disease. A control group consisting of 34 healthy individuals was included for comparison. MPV measurements were performed serially upon presentation with active uveitis and at one and three month thereafter in BD group whereas only at presentation in the controls.Results. Upon presentation with active uveitis, the mean MPV levels were 7.88 ± 1.14 femtoliters (fL) for BD group. During the posttreatment follow-up period at first and third months, BD patients demonstrated a mean MPV level of 7.71 ± 1.12 fL and 7.65 ± 1.04 fL, respectively. The mean MPV value of control group, was 8.39 ± 0.66 fL at presentation. Fluctuations in MPV values were not significant in the BD group, while there was a significant difference between the initial measurements of the BD and control groups.Conclusion. MPV measurement in ocular BD is not a predictive laboratory test to determine the clinical improvement in early stages following classical immunosuppressive treatment.

Introduction and Objectives: In this study, we aimed to investigate whether platelet count (PLT) and platelet indices included mean platelet volume (MPV), platecrit (PCT), platelet distribution width  (PDW) values can be used as diagnostic markers in cranial meningiomas. Materials and Methods: The study included results of 29 patient and 47 healthy contributors. Based on pathologies, the patients were divided into two groups. The first group included meningioma patients and the second one included healthy individuals. Healthy contributors named control group. Platelet count and platelet indices were determined using Sysmex XN 550 haematology analyzer. The preoperative platelet count (PLT) and platelet indices included mean platelet volume (MPV), platecrit (PCT), platelet distribution width  (PDW) values were recorded from the routine laboratory tests. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in PLT between the meningioma and healthy groups (p = 0.217). There was a statistically significant difference in PCT between the meningioma group and the healthy group (p = 0.002). There was a statistically significant difference in PDW between meningioma group and healthy group (p = 0.001). In terms of MPV, there was a statistically significant difference between meningioma group and the healthy group (p = 0.001) Conclusion: Platelet count and indices are easily available in the routine blood tests. Despite the retrospective design and small sample size, our findings suggest that altered MPV, PDW and PCT levels might serve as potential biomarkers for the diagnosis of meningiomas.

Background: Acute pulmonary embolism (PE) is the third most fatal cardiovascular disease. PE is frequently misdiagnosed due to its clinical presentation’s heterogeneity and the inexistence of biomarkers for its immediate diagnosis. Mean platelet volume (MPV) has shown a potential role as a biomarker in acute PE. In this analysis, we aimed to systematically compare the MPV in patients with and without definite diagnosis of PE, in emergency departments. Methods: Embase, PubMed and Medline were searched for relevant publications, in English. The main inclusion criteria were studies which compared MPV in patients with acute PEA versus a control group. Results: Thirteen studies consisting of a total number of 2428 participants were included. Of the participants included, 1316 were patients with confirmed acute PE, and 1112 were assigned to the control group. MPV was significantly higher in patients with acute PE than in controls (RR: 0.84, 95% CI: 0.76 – 0.92; P < .00001). There was a significant heterogeneity in the data. Conclusions: This analysis showed higher MPV to be associated with acute PE immediate diagnosis. These data show promise for the use of MPV as a readily available biomarker for the diagnosis of acute PE at the emergency department.
