Abstract Along with the accelerated process of urbanization, the contradiction between social development and environment become increasingly conspicuous. Herein, we access the transport and fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by a newly proposed multiple land-use fugacity (MLUF) model to provide comprehensive understanding of PAHs distribution in an urban and suburban areas. PAHs behave differently towards distinct soil types and land covers within the soil phase. We suggest and implement the MLUF model to estimate the PAHs distribution in diverse land types. Moreover, we introduce a multivariate interpretation and systematic model calibration framework to validate the MLUF model adaptability in different land-use area. Accordingly, the organic film on impervious surfaces holds the highest PAHs concentration than other compartments, also soil and sediment phases keep most of PAHs. The potential cancer risk of PAHs in different land-usecompartments follow the order of urban green space > agricultural area > forest and semi-nature area. Besides, the dynamic MLUF model is developed and implemented to the period of COVID-19 pandemic for quantitively estimating the dynamic variations of the PAHs concentration. Finally, we can realize the better scientific understanding of the typical PAHs environmental pollutants transfer phenomena and distribution fates in urban and suburban areas.

Land use/cover greatly affect the quality of an area. Therefore, many regional planners need assistance byother fields, such as geoinformatics, computer science, environment, and others. Although prediction and forecasting have been widely studied, in regardto real conditions (geospatial)itstill needmoredevelopment, especially thoseinvolving a combination of regional types, such as urban and suburban areas. This study uses a remote sensing base and geographic information system in predicting land in the city and district of Bekasi, West Java, Indonesia. With two scenarios compared (business as usual and vegetation conservation), the model that has been created and validated (with an AUC accuracy result of 0.828) is used to predict land use change until 2030. Scenarios with vegetation conservation are able to keep green areas to switch to land types others, such as buildings and industry

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have been associated with environmental pollutants. The scope of this study is to assess any potential relation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), their hydroxylated derivatives, and trace elements with heart failure via their direct determination in human serum of Greek citizens residing in different areas. Therefore, we analyzed 131 samples including cases (heart failure patients) and controls (healthy donors), and the respective demographic data were collected. Significantly higher concentrations (p < 0.05) were observed in cases’ serum regarding most of the examined PAHs and their derivatives with phenanthrene, fluorene, and fluoranthene being the most abundant (median of >50 μg L−1). Among the examined trace elements, As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Ni, and Pb were measured at statistically higher concentrations (p < 0.05) in cases’ samples, with only Cr being significantly higher in controls. The potential impact of environmental factors such as smoking and area of residence has been evaluated. Specific PAHs and trace elements could be possibly related with heart failure development. Atmospheric degradation and smoking habit appeared to have a significant impact on the analytes’ serum concentrations. PCA–logistic regression analysis could possibly reveal common mechanisms among the analytes enhancing the hypothesis that they may pose a significant risk for CVD development.

The aim of the research was to determine the effectiveness of removing micro-organic pollutants, including PAHs, using the modified Fenton method. The tested material was pretreated coke wastewater, in which the initial chemical oxygen demand (COD) value and initial polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) concentration were determined. The samples were then subjected to an oxidation procedure. Before the process, the pH was adjusted to 3.5–3.8. Next, the following doses of sodium carbonate—hydrogen peroxide (2/3): 1.2 g/L, 1.5 g/L and 2 g/L, and a constant dose of iron sulphate were added. The next step was exposing the samples to UV light for 6 min and separating the organic matrix from the samples of wastewater. After the tests, the final value of the COD and the final PAHs concentration were determined. The average content of organic pollutants in pretreated coke wastewater determined by the COD index was 538 mg/L, and after the oxidation process, the COD index decreased in the range from 9 to 29%. The efficiency of the degradation of the sum of 16 PAHs was varied and was in the range of 94–97.6%. The research results show that sodium carbonate—hydrogen peroxide (2/3) can be used for the degradation of organic pollutants, such as PAHs, in the modified Fenton process.

In this study, land use capabilities, land types and other soil properties of Kırşehir province were classified and analyzed. In the study, 1/25.000 scale digital soil maps obtained from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (Turkey) were used. Numerical data were classified using Arc GIS 10.3.1 software, which is one of the GIS software. As a result of the research; In general, It was observed that IV. class lands were formed in the Kirsehir province IV.class lands were found to be 1658.3 km2 and it was determined that they cover 25% of the total area. It is seen that soil insufficiency is high in Kırşehir province due to slope and erosion damage. Soil insufficiency due to slope and erosion damage was found to be 3520.7 km2 and it was determined that 54% of the total area was exposed to this effect. It has been observed that the land type is generally composed of steppe, bare rocks and rubble. It was determined that the area formed by bare, rocks and debris is 1128.5 km2. It has been determined that the stony soil areas are 1094.2 km2. As a result of the study, classified map outputs related to land uses and some soil properties were obtained. It will be inevitable that this research will provide important database bases for other studies to be carried out in this region in the future.

The countryside around major Slovak cities is undergoing significant transformation. The construction of shopping centres, administrative buildings, logistical sites, residential areas and changes in the agricultural use of land are causing vast changes in land use (land cover). The objective of this paper is to examine changes in the spatial structure of land use in the hinterland of 11 Slovak cities, with more than 50 thousand inhabitants, during the period from 2000 to 2008. On the basis of a detailed comparison of data obtained from the Aggregated Areas of Land Types database (Úhrnné hodnoty druhov pozemkov) we analyzed changes in land use in 847 municipalities within the Functional Urban Regions of Bratislava, Košice, Prešov, Nitra, Žilina, Banská Bystrica, Trnava, Trenčín, Poprad and Prievidza. The results of the research confirmed significantly differentiated changes in land use. Whereas in the capital of Bratislava changes in land use are primarily caused by suburbanization, creating a relatively compact suburban zone, changes in land use were recorded only in selected sites in the rest of these major Slovak cities.

The evaluation of the possible negative effect of pyrochars on soils based on the analysis of the content of lipid fraction and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) of organic matter was evaluated. Eight species of pyrochar were obtained from the crop and wood residues (linden, willow, corn, millet) by two pyrolysis regimes: low-temperature pyrolysis (<400°C) and high-temperature pyrolysis (400–600°C). The largest amount of lipid fraction (from 0.54 to 2.78%) and PAHs were found in pyrochars obtained at a low pyrolysis temperature. The total content of PAHs in the studied samples ranged from 8.49 to 603.21 μg/kg. According to the PAHs content, pyrochar was the most adverse for application to the soil, obtained from the residues of millet of low-temperature pyrolysis, however, at a high pyrolysis temperature, the safest product with the lowest PAHs concentration and a significant amount of lipid fraction was formed. Using an incubation experiment by measuring substrate-induced respiration in soil-pyrochar mixtures, it was shown that the application of this meliorant can also increase the emission of carbon dioxide from soils in a short time. The results of the experiments showed that it is necessary to precisely control the conditions of pyrolysis and carefully select the material for pyrochar in order to obtain the products with most favourable amounts of lipid fraction and PAHs content.
