Abstract Detecting the development height of water flowing fractured zone in the roof of coal seam is of great significance for the roof safety of working face with developed sandstone and thick loose layer. This paper analyzes the influence of the induced polarization effect of electrode on the traditional single-mode parallel electrical method. In order to avoid this interference, the dual-mode parallel electrical method is applied to monitor the roof deformation and failure of a coal mine in Ordos Basin. The monitoring results show that: under the influence of mining, the change of geoelectric field of coal seam roof is dynamic, the apparent resistivity of initial mining fracture is high, the apparent resistivity of surrounding rock water filling mining fracture is low, and the apparent resistivity of fracture water flowing to goaf is high again. According to the characteristics of geoelectric field, the maximum height of water flowing fracture zone is 122 M; The average mining coal thickness of the working face is 11 m, and the fracture / mining thickness ratio is 11.1. The results of plastic zone show that the maximum height of water flowing fractured zone above the working face is 122 m, which is consistent with the test results. The vertical stress response characteristics of roof monitoring points are zonal. Under the influence of mining, the loose layer near the surface above the working face is cracked. The edge type ground fissures exist for a long time, and there are a series of geological problems such as soil erosion, ground subsidence.

The height of the water-conducting fractured zone (WCFZ) is a basic parameter related to water protection in coal mines and is also crucial for aquifer protection and mine safety. In order to accurately detect the height and shape and reveal the formation mechanism of the WCFZ, which is caused by middle-deep coal seam mining in a sandy region, the 112201 coalface at the 1# coal mine of Xiaobaodang was taken as a case study. Filed measurements including fluid leakage, borehole TV, and similar simulation were adopted to analyze the regularity of the WCFZ in this area. The detection results of field measurements showed that the maximum height of the WCFZ was 177.07 m in a borehole near the open-off cut, and the ratio of the height of the water-conducting fractured zone divided by the mining thickness was 30.53. The WCFZ acquired an inward-convergent saddle shape, which was inclined to the goaf. The saddle bridge was located at the boundary of the goaf, and the saddle ridge was located at the center of the goaf. Also, through analyzing the results of similar simulations, we found that, in the process of mining, separation cracks and the beam structure were the main forms of overburden disturbance transmitting upward and ahead of mining, respectively. The main cause of the increase in height of the WCFZ was the connection of the separation cracks and vertical cracks caused by fractures of beam structures. The development of the WCFZ was divided into five stages: incubation stage, development stage, rapidly increasing stage, slowly increasing stage, and stable stage. Moreover, the duration of each stage was related to the lithology and mining technology. This research can provide significant theoretical insights for the prediction of the WCFZ, enabling the prevention of water hazards on mine roofs and assisting with water resources protection.

Rib spalling disaster at the coal mining faces severely restricted the safe and efficient output of coal resources. In order to solve this problem, based on the analysis of the current status of rib spalling in the three-soft coal seam 1508 Working Face of Heyang Coal Mine, a mechanical model of sliding-type rib spalling was established and the main influencing factors that affect rib spalling are given. The mechanism of grouting technology to prevent and control rib spalling has been theoretically analyzed. A similarity simulation experiment is used to analyze the change law of roof stress under the condition of three-soft coal seam mining. The optimal grouting pressure is determined by a numerical simulation experiment. And, silicate-modified polymer grouting reinforcement materials (SMPGMs) are used in field experiments. After twice grouting operations in the 1508 Working Face, the coal wall was changed from the original soft and extremely easy rib spalling to a straight coal wall and the amount of rib spalling has been reduced by 57.45% and 48.43, respectively. And, the mining height has increased by 0.16 m and 0.23 m, respectively. The experimental results show that the rib spalling disaster of the three-soft coal seam has been effectively controlled.

The water inrush of a working face is the main hidden danger to the safe mining of underwater coal seams. It is known that the development of water-flowing fractured zones in overlying strata is the basic path which causes water inrushes in working faces. In the engineering background of the underwater mining in the Longkou Mining Area, the analysis model and judgment method of crack propagation were created on the basis of the Mohr–Coulomb criterion. Fish language was used to couple the extension model into the FLAC3d software, in order to simulate the mining process of the underwater coal seam, as well as to analyze the initiation evolutionary characteristics and seepage laws of the fractured zones in the overlying strata during the advancing processes of the working face. The results showed that, during the coal seam mining process, the mining fractured zones which had been caused by the compression-shear and tension-shear were mainly concentrated in the overlying strata of the working face. Also, the open-off cut and mining working face were the key sections of the water inrush in the rock mass. The condition of the water disaster was the formation of a water inrush channel. The possible water inrush channels in underwater coal mining are mainly composed of water-flowing fractured zones which are formed during the excavation processes. The numerical simulation results were validated through the practical engineering of field observations on the height of water-flowing fractured zone, which displayed a favorable adaptability.

The mine pressure behavior characters of shallow buried coal seam differed from both shallow seam mining and general depth seam. Mine pressure observation and numerical analysis were applied to research mine pressure behavior laws in fully mechanized face of shallow buried coal seam with thick bedrock and thin alluvium. It showed that the ground subsidence level phenomenon did not appear obviously although with obvious dynamic loading of fully mechanized face during the pressure period. The appearance was due to non-synchronized fracture from two key layers in the overlying rock layers and their interaction, which leaded to roof breaking initially and caving rocks with the form of an arch. Due to the periodic breaking and caving characteristics appearing as fully cut-down and arch alternately, the periodic pressure of shallow buried coal seam face showed as different size. The conclusion could be a reference for similar working face control.

For fault displacement on the influence of the water flowing fractured zone, using the methods of numerical simulation analysis, the research simulated the coal seam mining of mid-hard superincumbent stratum. Through the simulations of the influence to water flowing fractured zone of different fault displacements, the study concluded that: with the increase of fault throw, the increase of the height of water flowing fractured zone is not big, in general, the increase value is bigger 2.44 ~ 7.32% than no fault existence in the coal seam mining.

The water burst of roof on working face has been one of the significant geotechnical engineering problems that needs to be urgently resolved. The coupling effects of seepage and damage on the amount and intensity of water inrush from the roof are critically important. In this paper, the seepage-damage coupling mathematical model of the aquifer in the working face is studied, and the seepage-damage coupling mechanics model at different stages of the aquifer is established. Under the coupling of permeability and damage, the water-soil characteristics of the aquifer in the 101163 working face of Mindong were numerically simulated by establishing the constitutive relation between vertical stress and permeability coefficient. The numerical results show that the stress concentration factor of the mining stress field gradually increases with the coal seam mining. The water-flowing fractured zone of the overburden is close to the communication of the quaternary aquifer. When the coal seam is excavated 250–300 m. Three free surfaces appear in the groundwater pressure field, and a large falling funnel is formed to establish a deep flow S-well well flow model. The research on the mining stress field and seepage field is carried out in combination with the Jakob formula. It is found that two sectors with reduced permeability of the fan surface are formed in front of the work. The variation law of the apocalyptic permeability infiltration under different mining distances, different coal seam thicknesses, different water pressures, and different roof management modes is studied systematically. The research indicates that the seepage flow under the condition of seepage infiltration of the lower aquifer should be between 50% and 100% of the traditional calculation method. The research results can help to deepen the understanding of the process of water inrush under the coupling of stress and seepage.

In the process of coal mining, the surface subsidence under ultrathick loose layer is abnormal (subsidence coefficient greater than 1.0), which will cause great damage to the surface ecological environment. The fracture propagation and stress evolution of bedrock are of great significance to the prevention of surface subsidence. Taking the 1305 working face of a mine as the background, this paper study the process of crack propagation and stress evolution of bedrock under the influence of ultrathick loose layer by methods of on-site measurement, similar simulation, and numerical simulation. During the research process, the physical model was verified by the measured data. Then, the numerical model was verified by the crack propagation angle and subsidence of bedrock, which were obtained in a similar simulation. Based on the verified numerical model, it was obtained that after the coal seam was mined out, the bedrock above the mined-out area was mainly damaged by tension, while the strata on both sides of the crack expansion angle were mainly damaged by shear and tension. During coal seam mining, for bedrock the process of fracture expansion, subsidence, and stress evolution all could be divided into four stages. This research provides a basis for the control of surface subsidence.

The height of the fractured zone caused by coal mining is extremely significant for safely mining under water, water conservation, and gas treatment. At present, the common prediction methods of overburden fractured zone height are only applicable to thin and medium-thick coal seams, not suitable for thick and extra-thick coal seams. In order to determine the overburden fractured zone distribution characteristics of extra-thick seam mining, failure process analysis method of overlying strata was proposed based on key strata theory. This method was applied to 15 m coal seam of Tongxin coal mine, and fractured zone height was determined to be 174 m for 8100 panel. EH4 electromagnetic image system and borehole televiewer survey were also conducted to verify the theory results. The distribution of the electrical conductivity showed that the failure height was 150–170 m. Observation through the borehole televiewer showed that the fractured zone height was 171 m. The results of the two field test methods showed that the fractured zone height was 150–171 m, and it was consistent with the theory calculation results. Therefore, this failure process analysis method of overlying strata can be safely used for other coal mines.
