Abstract In this research, we sought to better understand important trends and developments in the teaching of quantitative and research methods courses in graduate public affairs programs. We were specifically interested in the following areas related to the teaching of quantitative and research methods: the impact of new technologies on curriculum delivery; the content of courses related to statistical analysis and research design; and the importance of numeracy, ethics, and data visualization. We surveyed quantitative and research methods instructors in graduate public affairs programs using the same survey instrument at two intervals eight years apart and analyzed results from each period side-by-side. Findings indicate some stark differences in the content and delivery of these courses. Given the timing of the second survey – Spring 2021 – findings are considered within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background: Similar to teaching certificate programs, which have been incorporated in many pharmacy residencies to improve teaching skills, resident research certificate programs could provide residents with more exposure to biostatistics and research design. However, few research certificate programs have been described. Objective: To assess the impact of a research certificate program on residents’ attitude toward, confidence in, and knowledge of research. Methods: A resident research certificate program was created for the 2018-2019 residency class at our institution, which included 33 pharmacy residents (15 postgraduate year-1 [PGY1] and 18 PGY2 residents). The program consisted of 7 sessions aimed at providing residents with research training. To earn a certificate, participants were required to attend 6 or more sessions and achieve a score greater than or equal to 70% on a postassessment. An optional questionnaire assessing attitude, confidence, and knowledge was also administered at baseline and following the certificate program. Results: Of the 33 residents participating in the research certificate program, 21 (9 PGY1 and 12 PGY2) residents completed both the baseline and follow-up questionnaire and were included in the analysis. All items assessing attitude and 3 of 6 items assessing confidence improved significantly following the certificate program when compared to baseline ( P < .05 for all). Median knowledge scores were no different on the baseline versus follow-up questionnaire ( P = .54). Conclusions: After completing a research certificate program, resident knowledge scores did not differ from baseline, but attitudes toward research and confidence appeared to improve. Research certificate programs could be an avenue for providing pharmacy residents with increased exposure to and comfort with biostatistics and research design.

The subject of the research is the impact of digital technologies on the insurance market in terms of internetization, digitalization and individualization of the insurance business. The purpose of the research was to analyze the digital insurance concept and the process of digitalization of the insurance market based on the Russian and foreign insurers’ practices in the promotion of digital technologies, including the use of general scientific approaches and research methods. Among the results of the research were the definitions of the «digital insurance» and «digitalization of insurance activities» concepts as well as the formulation of problems and prospects for further use of digital technologies in the insurance market. The paper concludes that the introduction of new technologies in the digital economy will influence the insurance technology without changing its economic substance. Moreover, the digitalization of insurance activities will be followed by significant innovations improving the effectiveness of the former, development of new insurance programs, convergence of commercial and mutual insurance and things alike.

Research design is a critical topic that is central to research studies in science, social science, and many other disciplines. After identifying the research topic and formulating questions, selecting the appropriate design is perhaps the most important decision a researcher makes. Currently, there is a plethora of literature presenting multiple approaches to the formulation of research design. Although the existence of multiple approaches is a powerful source in the development of a research design, new public administration (PA) researchers and students may see it as a source of confusion because there is a lack of clarity in the literature about the approaches to research design, research methods, and research methodology in the social sciences. The purpose of this research paper is to lessen the confusion over research design and offer a better understanding of these approaches. The comparison analysis obtained in this research can provide guidance for PA researchers, students and practitioners when considering the research design most appropriate for their study. To achieve the research purpose, a comparison analysis was conducted to study the differences in research design perspectives and approaches. Three dominant works related to research design, by Earl R. Babbie, Elizabethann O’Sullivan et al., and John W. Creswell, were selected as representative of the wide array of approaches in the PA literature. In identifying similarities and differences across the scholars’ approaches, the analysis includes: (a) definitions of and steps in research design, and (b) the perspectives on research methods and research methodology. The analysis showed that research design approaches are convergent and divergent and that it is necessary for PA researchers and students to be knowledgeable about the various research design approaches before selecting a specific design for their research. An example scenario was provided to show the impact of different perspectives on research design in the PA literature.

This chapter describes the methodological challenges involved in answering the question whether constitutional rights matter. While there is no easy way to overcome these challenges, the approach of this book is to use a range of methods to study this topic. This book’s primary method is large-N statistical analysis. But because no single quantitative research design is likely to isolate the causal effects of constitutional rights, it supplements large-N analysis with case studies and survey experiments. By using a range of methods, we can triangulate onto a more accurate understanding of the effect of constitutional rights than any single method could provide. This chapter also reflects upon the challenges involved in measuring human rights violations and describes the data we use to capture rights violations.

The practical problem which motivates this paper is that of deciding - on the basis of published research - whether to adopt some new device, procedure or paradigm thought likely to improve education. What models, methods or media are likely to be most useful? From the invention of the printing press to multimedia software, educators have adopted unproven aids and fads. Researchers usually claim each new device or procedure to be at least as effective as its predecessor. How valid is all this research? How to decide? A typical view is: Design an experiment to observe the effects of your treatment. Any book on research design and statistics will show you how. But will it? What essential aspects of educational measurement and research must we consider?DOI:10.1080/0968776970050108

New technologies have allowed corporations to collect, store and manage huge quantities of data, being necessary in their daily management. Hence, business intelligence and data analytics have become an important and rapidly growing area of study that reflects the impact of data-related problems to be solved in business organizations. However, it is difficult to recognized patterns and draw conclusions from large amount of data and also, understand the stories of such information. We propose a methodology based on storytelling technique in order to improve the perception and interpretation of the data with the aim to make the information more memorable for people.

Initial translation interference refers to the impact of the initial translation on other-revisers. The factor of initial translation interference on reviser trainees has not been examined systematically. The current research investigates two related questions: How does trainees’ revision performance relate to their translation performance? And how is trainees’ revision performance impacted by the initial translated text they are provided with? A mixed research design of quantitative and semi-qualitative research methods is used for a more comprehensive analysis and a higher validity of the findings. The results suggest that good translator trainees tend to be also competent in revision, and poor translator trainees tend to be also weak at revision. However, no significant correlation is found for the intermediate group. The trainees tend to find revision tasks more challenging than the translation tasks and negative interference of the initial translation is prevalent both lexically and syntactically. They are very likely to be distracted and misled by the initial translation. The methodology and findings of this study have implications for translation researchers as well as educators.

A focus on the study of development and other kinds of changes in the whole individual has been one of the hallmarks of research by Magnusson and his colleagues. A number of different approaches emphasize this individual focus in their respective ways. This presentation focuses on intraindividual variability stemming from Cattell's P-technique factor analytic proposals, making several refinements to make it more tractable from a research design standpoint and more appropriate from a statistical analysis perspective. The associated methods make it possible to study intraindividual variability both within and between individuals. An empirical example is used to illustrate the procedure.
