The purpose of this work is to study the best number of layer with the higher impact energy using Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer (GFRP). The number of layers used in this study was 25, 33, 41, and 49. The impact test was performed using Single Stage Gas Gun (SSGG) for each layers given above with different bullets such as blunt, hemispherical and conical bullets. The gas gun pressure was set to 5, 10, 15 and 20 bar. All of the signals captured from the impact test were recorded using a ballistic data acquisition system. The correlation between the impact energy in terms of number of layer and type of bullet from this test are presented and discussed. It can be summarise that as the number of layer increases, impact energy also increases. In addition, from the results, it was observed that by using different types of bullets (blunt, hemispherical, conical), there is only a slight difference in values of energy absorbed by the specimen.

Single stage gas guns are typically used for accelerating the projectiles in bird and hail impact tests of aerospace components and engines. In this paper an alternative design for single stage gas gun is studied, which is derived from V3 canon. Three dimensional numerical simulations is carried out for the optimal secondary connection angle with the main barrel. A one dimensional code is developed for the V3 canon based design. Design of experiments conducted to find the response surface for the optimal location of the secondary connection, volume and pressure of the secondary tank.

Composite plays a significant role in the field of aerospace due to its excellent mechanical properties, nevertheless, they are highly susceptible to out-of-plane impact load. Fibre-reinforced composite fails effortlessly under impact load and absorb energy through damage mechanics rather than deformation. The present study investigates the damage behaviour of the CNT reinforced carbon fibre-epoxy composite under high velocity impact using single stage gas gun. Composite plates were fabricated with 0 to 0.6 weight percentage content of CNT as reinforcement using vacuum assisted resin transfer moulding. A series of impact test with various impact energy was carried out on carbon/epoxy composite plate to study the impact performance. From the experimentation it was observed that the 0.3 weight percentage CNT addition provides the optimum impact performance. Damage characterization was performed for various impact velocity based on the micro and macro scale damage area. Knowledge of the damage behaviour of CNT reinforced carbon fibreepoxy composite plate under high velocity impact loads is essential for both the product development and material selection in the aerospace application.

In order to simulate and study the hypervelocity impact of space debris on dual-wall structure of spacecrafts, firstly a non-powder two-stage light gas gun was used to launch AL-sphere projectiles. Damage modes in rear wall of dual-wall structure were obtained, and while the law of damage in rear wall depends on projectile diameter and impact velocity were proposed. Finally, numerical simulation method was used to study the law of damage in rear wall. By experiment and numerical simulation of hypervelocity impact on the dual-wall structure by Al-spheres, and it is found that AUTODYN-2D SPH is an effective method of predicting damage in rear wall from hypervelocity impact. By numerical simulation of projectile diameter, projectile velocity and the space between bumper and back wall effect on damage in rear wall by hypervelocity impact, and fitting curves with simulation results, the law of damage in rear wall and dominant factors effect damage in rear wall by hypervelocity impact were proposed.
