Plants are a part of many rituals and celebrations and they influence our language, art, and literature. At the First National Symposium on The Role of Horticulture in Human Well-Being and Social Development, a session on Plants and Human Culture was held. A review will be given of the seven oral presentations from this session and the discussion which followed. Some of the topics presented included the role of the corporate garden in the cultural activities of the community, the role of horticulture in holiday celebrations, the role of flowers in the bereavement process, and floral symbolism in paintings. Actions which horticulturists can take to promote horticulture within the cultural setting will be presented.

Abstract: This paper aims to make a theoretical review on the main approaches to Well-being and also introduce the subject of Responsibility as an element to be considered in this discussion. Thus, three theories of well-being are presented: the Mainstream Economics, the Happiness Economics and The Capability Approach. Each of them provides considerations about what matters for people’s life and social development. However, none of them contemplates individual responsibility as a relevant component for development. And only The Capability Approach takes account of responsibility, but without furthering the subject. In this sense, the theme of responsibility is defended as having an important role for development and well-being, and could be incorporated by The Capability Approach.

The purpose of this article was to propose a model of moral and ethical development according to the philosophy of sufficiency economy. Documentary study was used by studying the role of Buddhist monks and analyzing the consistency of morality, ethics, and philosophy of sufficiency economy consisted of modesty, rationality, and immunity that based on the conditions of knowledge and morality. Results indicated that the guidelines for moral development began with the development of education in order to provide people with knowledge with various abilities, and also apply the aforementioned knowledge to occupations building well-being for yourself and your family. For moral and ethical development, it is very important aspect for social development. Considering with the current situation in Thai society, it can be seen that the chaos of Thai society today is mainly due to the lack of moral and ethical lifestyle. Therefore, moral and ethical development must know how to improve oneself to be people with sufficient knowledge, and be a person who spends sufficiently on education, a person with good physical health and mental health, and be a learner who know how to solve problems, and know how to think reasonably. There are five aspects in a model of moral and ethical development consisted of education, Dhamma propagation, social welfare, inherit culture, promote and preserve environment. There are two important principles for the maximum benefit which are virtues for a good household life, and virtues conducive to growth in wisdom.

What's so special about music? We experience it internally, yet at the same time it is highly social. Music engages our cognitive/affective and sensory systems. We use music to communicate with one another—and even with other species—the things that we cannot express through language. Music is both ancient and ever evolving. Without music, our world is missing something essential. This book offers a social and behavioral neuroscientific explanation of why music matters. Its aim is not to provide a grand, unifying theory. Instead, it guides the reader through the relevant scientific evidence that links neuroscience, music, and meaning. Purpose: This study is designed to investigate the role of microfinance on the economic and social development of people in the rural areas of the Province of Sind Pakistan. This study considers and compares two situations of the respondents: economic and social conditions before and after taking micro loan. Methodology/Sampling: The target population for this study is those people who planned to take microcredit from the banks with the objective to change their lives by investing such funds in their existing business or opening new business. We conducted a survey about their economic well-being before taking microcredit (Feb-July 2013) and then revisited to them after a year and determined their status after taking microcredit. The study considers descriptive as well as statistical analysis such as Chi square, OLS estimation and one sample T test. Findings: The study concludes that there is no change in Economic Conditions of Borrowers after accusation of Micro finance. The microfinance could not improve their Business growth as well. However, in Social Development, there is significant improvement in the Lifestyle of borrowers, whereas, there is no significant improvement in Health and Education needs of Buyers before and after taking of microfinance. The study further concludes that borrowers believe that the Loan Amount provided is not sufficient for their needs and both the repayment schedule and interest rate are not reasonable to facilitate them. Practical Implications: this study provides bases for new dimensions especially for the policymakers and the regulatory bodies that the term structure of Micro credit should be revised as well as the amount of loan should also be sufficient for the borrowers’ need.

Abstract Objective: to understand the role of cultural engagement in the lives of older adults. Method: an integrative literature review of publications from 2014 and 2019 in English, Portuguese, and Spanish was conducted. The Scopus, Web of Science, MEDLINE/PubMed, CINAHL, PsycNET®, LILACS, SciELO Citation Index and Science Direct databases were used as sources of information. The descriptors “aged” and the related term “cultural engagement” in the three idioms were used in the search, together with the Boolean operators “AND” or “ OR”. A total of 12 articles that met the inclusion criteria were found. These were categorized based on the theme. No Brazilian studies were found. Results: the panorama found revealed that older adults are more interested in receptive cultural activities, such as going to museums, exhibitions and the theater, as these enrich and add greater social value to their lives. Cultural engagement was associated with a reduction in the incidence of neuropsychiatric disorders (dementia and depression), as well as reducing the incidence of episodes of violence. Participation in cultural activities also constituted a protective factor for cognitive abilities and for the reduction of chronic pain. There is also evidence that associates cultural engagement with a better perception of quality of life and greater well-being, happiness and positive affect, as well as the reduction of negative affect. Conclusion: engaging in cultural activities is a way of understanding and respecting cultural diversity, salvaging social identities, and enjoying and providing experiences of great social value, with beneficial impacts in the lives of older adults.

This study identifies global factors conditioning the global problematics of the direction of social development. Global threats were evaluated and defined as dangerous processes, phenomena, and situations that cause harm to health, safety, well-being, and the lives of all humanity, and require removal. The essence of global risks was defined. These risks were defined as events or conditions that may cause a significant negative effect for several countries or spheres within a strategic period if they occur. Global problems were conceptualized. These problems were defined as phenomena, matters, and situations that are not completely understandable, interesting, actual, require solving and regulation, and in addition do not have unified solutions. Current global challenges were analyzed, defined as strategic guidelines that cause transformational changes and are receiving attention from humanity. Global trends were defined as courses of social development. The composition and role of global actors were described, and defined as international organizations, leading states, regional organizations, powerful corporations, institutional investors, large cities, and well-known personalities. The directions of positive courses of social development were developed by means of using the authors’ mechanism of solving the global problematics.
