Sustainable development is becoming a very important issue in the 21st century. Facing global changes such as the global warming, global climate change, as well as other pressing issue, all spheres of economy and social life need to take part in mitigating them and preventing disasters from happening. Our article studies the role of the small business in the above processes and the place of the small business in promoting sustainable development through its actions, public and social awareness and responsibility. We show how even small and medium enterprises can become a decisive power in tackling the climate change and promoting green thinking and sustainable awareness. This can be achieved through enhancing social responsibility of business companies which can greatly contribute to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and promoting sustainable economic growth.

This issue largely focuses on the topics related to general management. The first article on ‘Impact of Innovative Strategic Human Resource Management Practices on the Performance of Small and Medium Enterprises’– A Case Study of Karnataka by B.K.Sathyanarayana and Nawal Kishor aims at evaluating the application and implementation of Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM) practices for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and to examine its impact on organisational performance. Six hundred & forty SMEs in and around the Bangalore District from both Manufacturing and Services Sector responded to the various Strategic Human Resource Management drivers and organizational drivers and it was inferred that there exists a positive significant correlation between these variables.  The next article on sustainable development best management practices in the food processing industry by Uma CS, Basavaraj & Prasanna Joshi attempts to study sustainable development that involves issues like organic farming, food safety and food quality. This paper highlights on the concept of green food system and the approach of good agricultural practices (GAP) which is a new concept that stresses on international quality standards, concerns and commitments about food production, food safety and security, environment sustainability of agriculture. Quality management is equally important in the food industry. Food processing is a capital intensive, water consuming and a polluting industry.  Therefore this paper also studies the management practices in this industry to reduce water wastage, ensuring food quality so the concept of green growth can be achieved. It also throws light on the various Governmental laws and regulations passed to control pollution and ensure food quality and health of the people.

Relations between public procurement, regional development, and e-procurement are discussed in this chapter. First, main themes of the debate are reviewed. Subsequently, some relations between public procurement, regional development, and e-procurement are discussed. The Czech Republic is used as a case study in this regard. The authors’ findings confirm the potential of public procurement to stimulate development of Czech regions. Spatially, public procurement may not be regarded as a suitable tool for reduction of regional disparities. However, there seems to be an important impact of public procurement on the development of local small and medium enterprises. In addition, the authors’ findings point at some links between public procurement and the concepts of sustainable development and competitiveness. Nevertheless, the dominant position of price as evaluation criterion indicates that the linkages are rather weak. Finally, the increasing interest of the Czech Republic in e-procurement was documented.

This paper investigates the role of Insurance in the development of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in India. MSMEs have been accepted as a crucial component of an economy irrespective of the phase of development it is in. It is estimated that more than 95% of the enterprises across the world are MSMEs, employing around 60% people in the private sector. The MSMEs are considered key elements in the development of every nation. In India, MSME sector contributed 28.77% in GDP in 2016-17 with 63 million enterprises and employment of 110 million people. Despite its size, MSMEs cumulatively act as foundation of a stable economy and plays a significant role in the sustainable economic growth of a nation. However, the inherent features of MSMEs including limited financial and managerial capability cause them to face financial and strategic risks. Sustainability of the MSMEs can be supported by eliminating the credit gap and ensuring enhanced access to finance. The provision of financial support by financial intermediaries like banks can be augmented with proper risk management by the MSMEs with the help of Insurance Sector. The study concludes that insurance can play a significant role in the development of MSMEs by providing them adequate risk protection and thus enhancing their access to finance

The Impact

Although small and medium enterprises are important in the production and employment, these firms have structural limitation in terms of human and material resources. These limitations are highlighted after implementation of targeted subsidies in Iran, release prices of energy carriers, and simultaneity of political and economic situation. The main challenge in the current path of sustainable development is addressed to all sectors of society such as engineering and production. Manufactured products must consider the impact of three aspects of sustainability over their life cycle. The three aspects of sustainability as an integral part of sustainability issues are economic, environmental, and social factors. Therefore, in this study, for achieve sustainable economic development in Iran, consider only economic aspect. Because, it will greatly benefit from the transfer of advanced production technologies in industry through international agreements such as the clean development mechanism (CDM). However, the highly competitive environment is critical because of more cost-effective projects, which is why Iran needs to strike a balance between sustainable development and profitability for projects. In this study, identifying and ranking of major challenges of leading small and medium industries have been studied. It also uses the failures mode and effect analysis (FMEA) technique and survey experts and managers of small and medium industries in the province recognized and decision model using several branches. VIKOR was ranked as the most important challenge. The results show that exchange rate volatility has been the highest priority, so the first challenge has been identified. Similarly, the political boycott and the rise in the cost of production and cost of product manufacturing enterprises were identified as the next challenges.

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are the biggest group of enterprises in the European Union (EU); they are also characteristic for emerging economies. Given this situation, there is a need to provide instruments such as processes, which allows them to realize a model of sustainable development. The ability to classify processes and occurrences happening inside these processes often affects the condition of the enterprises. The implementation of innovations, as identified process, enables the directions of SME development towards sustainable development. The purpose of this article is to find out if the identification of processes such as innovations, have any influence on the competitiveness and sustainable development of SMEs. This study was based on pilot research, which examined small and medium enterprises at the regional level, at the example of Polish emerging economy region. It was researched under the angle of the identification of processes and changes happening inside enterprises in terms of understanding the sustainable development concept. Research composition allows to present an understanding by the SMEs of the problems analyzed. The novelty was in the new questionnaire, the definition of sustainable development, and matching those processes identified by the enterprises analyzed with the particular sustainable development dimensions suggested by the authors. In light of the analysis of the literature and the results of this research the important contributions of this study are as follows. This approach pointed the understanding and practical meaning of the identification of processes to be understood. The most important finding was that there is a need to make entrepreneurs aware of the fact that innovations are also processes in themselves, which often constitutes the sum of other supporting processes occurring in the enterprise. Support in the form of knowledge transfer from experts to SMEs would also be recommended.

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are forced to adhere to sustainable development (SD) regulations and standards. However, SMEs encounter difficulty in assessing their performance due to the lack of an efficient and effective approach to deal with the uncertainties in hierarchical relationships and interrelationships. Moreover, interrelations exist among the proposed attributes that increase the difficulty of the assessment. To overcome these issues, exploratory factor analysis is used to screen out the less important attributes and build a hierarchal structure. The fuzzy synthetic method addresses the hierarchical structure and decision-making, and a trial evaluation laboratory assesses the interrelationships among the attributes by providing a visual interrelationship map. The results indicate that strategic and financial management are the major problems for SMEs. SD relies on enhancing sustainable supply chain performance, sustainable human resources and environmental management. This study contributes by not only filling the information gap for SD for SMEs but also providing a guideline for improvement. The theoretical and managerial implications are discussed.
