Keeping quality and length of vase life are important factors for evaluation of cut flowers quality, for both domestic and export markets. Studding the effect of pre- and post-harvest salicylic acid applications on keeping quality and vase life of cut alstroemeria flowers during vase period is the approach taken. Aqueous solutions of salicylic acid at 0.0 (with distilled water), 1, 2 and 3 mM were sprayed to run-off (approximately 500 mL per plant), about two weeks before flowers harvest. The cut flowers were harvested in the early morning and both of cut flowers treated (sprayed) and untreated were kept in vase solutions containing salicylic acid at 0.0 (with distilled water), 1, 2 and 3 mM. Sucrose at 4% was added to all treatments as a base solution. The changes in relative fresh weight, water uptake, water loss, water balance, total chlorophyll content and vase life were estimated during vase period. The results showed that the relative fresh weight, water uptake, water balance, total chlorophyll content and vase life decreased significantly while the water loss increased significantly during experiment for all treatments. A significant difference between salicylic acid and control treatments in all measured parameters is observed. During vase period, the salicylic acid treatments maintained significantly a more favourable relative fresh weight, water uptake, water balance, total chlorophyll content and supressed significantly water loss, as compared to control treatment. Also, the results showed that the using salicylic acid increased significantly the vase life cut alstroemeria flowers, over control. The highest values of measured parameters were found when plants were treated by pre + post-harvest application of salicylic acid at 3 mM. The result revealed that the quality attributes and vase life of cut alstroemeria flowers were improved by the use of salicylic acid treatment.

Cut flowers of Dianthus caryophyllus L. cv. GIOKO were treated with different concentrations of sucrose and in combination with 1­methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) to compare the effect of these treatments with floral preservative (`Spring') on the longevity of flowers. Distilled water was used for preparing all solutions. The control flowers were held in distilled water. Clorox at 2 mL- I was added to all treatments containing sucrose and it was also applied as a separate treatment. The vase life of cut carnations was significantly prolonged due to the use of chemical treatments, as compared to the untreated control. The longest vase life (18.33 days) was obtained by using 1-MCP 0.5 g m-3 for 6 h treatment. All concentrations of sucrose had a positive effect on flower diameter. The best treatment in this respect was 1 -MCP with 30 gL-I sucrose. 1-MCP treatment significantly increased the chlorophyll content, as compared to the control or the "Spring" treatment. The highest values in this respect were obtained by 1 -MCP treatment alone or with the lowest level of sucrose. The effect of these treatments on the pH of solutions is discussed.

After storage at different temperatures for a simulated transportation period, the vase lives at 20 °C (68 °F) of carnations (Dianthus caryophyllus `Imperial White'), daffodils (Narcissus pseudonarcissus `King Alfred'), iris (Iris hollandica `Telstar'), killian daisies (Chrysanthemum maximum), paperwhite narcissus (Narcissus tazetta `Paperwhite'), roses (Rosa {XtimesX}hybrida `Ambiance'), and tulips (Tulipa gesneriana) decreased with increasing storage temperature. There were no significant differences between the vase life of flowers stored dry and flowers stored in water when storage temperatures were from 0 to 10 °C (32 to 50 °F). The vase life after wet storage at temperatures of 12.5 °C (54.5 °F) and greater was significantly higher than vase life after dry storage at those temperatures for all the flowers studied. Iris and carnation flowers survived storage at 15 and 20 °C (59 and 68 °F) only when stored in water.

Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) is one of the most commercially important cut flowers of the world. It can be used for cut flowers, bedding, edging, boarders, pots and rock garden. Four Spanish carnation varieties were tested with three levels of boron under ultra-violet stabilized polytunnels from August 2017 to April 2018 at Godawari, Nepal. The objective of the research was to evaluate vegetative, floral, and vase life parameters in relations to growth, yield and quality of carnation. The research was conducted in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. The variety Baltico had the maximum leaf length (19.3 cm), numbers of lateral branches (10.5), internodal length (5.1 cm), flower diameter (8.6 cm), and vase life (24.0 days). The numbers of nodes (5) and flower weight (25.4 g) were highest in the variety Vinco with the lowest cracked area on the stem (0.2 cm2/ crack). The numbers of stem cracks per plant significantly (p ≤0.01) reduced with an increasing level of boron though non-significant relation was observed on 60 ppm and 120 ppm. Variety Baltico was found as a better variety compared to the Vinco, Cervantes and Master varieties according to the vegetative, floral, yield and vase life parameters. Among the levels of boron tested, 60 ppm was found as the optimum dose. Thus, variety Baltico and 60 ppm boron is suggested to be used at the climatic condition of Lalitpur.

The effect of leaf extracts ofPsidium guajavaandPiper betleon prolonging vase life of cut carnation flowers was studied. “Carola” and “Pallas Orange” carnation flowers, at bud stage, were pulsed 24 hours with a floral preservative. Then, flowers were placed in a vase solution containing sprite and a “germicide” (leaf extracts ofP. guajavaandP. betle, 8-HQC, or a copper coin). Flowers treated with 8-HQC, copper coin, and leaf extracts had longer vase life, larger flower diameter, and higher rate of water uptake compared to control (tap water). The leaf extracts ofP. guajavaandP. betleshowed highest antibacterial and antifungal activities compared to the other treatments. Both showed similar effects on flower quality as the synthetic germicide, 8-HQC. Therefore, these extracts are likely natural germicides to prolong vase life of cut flowers.

A biological method for synthesizing silver nanoparticles (SNPs) using the leaf extracts of Arachis pintoi Krapov. & W.C. Greg. was developed.  The optimum conditions of input materials were found with leaf autoclaving in 15 min, 20 g fresh leave, and 4 mM of silver nitrate (AgNO3). To study the role of time, temperature, and solution pH of the reaction, varying time reaction (5, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, and 180 min), temperature reaction (10, 20, 30, 40, and 50oC) and pH of the solution (1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11) were investigated. The optimal biosynthesis conditions were achieved in 180 min of reaction time at 50oC and pH 11. The obtained nanoparticles have spherical and oblong in shape with average size of 26.4 nm. The SNPs in 4 concentrationss (5, 15, 25, and 35 ppm) combined with and without 2% sucrose extended vase life, enlarged flower diameter, and maintained increase the relative fresh weight with vase solution uptake rate. SNPs inhibited significantly the bacterial growth in the stem end and vase solution, reduced the blockage in stems and therefore promoted the postharvest quality of carnation cut flowers. Out of the treatments, administration of 5 ppm SNPs with 2% sucrose of vase solution gave the best results for all parameters. The biosynthesis SNPs could be applied as a promising preservative solution for carnation cut flowers.

The effect of STS and 1-MCP on the postharvest quality of carnation and rose cut flowers was studied. Cut flowers of Dianthus c..aryophyllus L. cv. Asso and Rosa hybritia cv. Baroness were treated with silver thiosulfate (STS) at 0.4 mM with sucrose at 50 g 1-t and 1-methylcyclopropene ( I -MCP) at 0.5 g m-3 for 611. Pretreatment with STS and 1-MCP significantly extended the vase life and minimized the % loss of initial weight of carnation and rose cut flowers comparing to the untreated control. The two chemicals applied inhibited the chlorophyll degradation and carbohydrate loss and hence, significantly improved the postharvest quality of carnation and rose cut flowers comparing to the control. Ethylene production by cut flowers was inhibited as a result of using these chemicals. In general, there were no differences between STS and (-MCP but the later does not have the heavy metal implications of STS treatment, and hence, using 1-MCP pretreatment for extending the vase life of carnation and rose cut flowers was recommended.
