Background and Objective.Oxidative stress is intimately associated with many diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Study objectives include a comparison of the oxidative stress, antioxidant status, and lipid profile between COPD patients and controls and evaluation of the effect of spirulina intervention on oxidative stress, antioxidant status, and lipid profile of COPD patients.Methods.30 patients with COPD and 20 controls with no respiratory problems were selected. Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease criteria were served as the basis of COPD diagnosis. The serum content of malondialdehyde (MDA), lipid hydroperoxide, glutathione (GSH), vitamin C, cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), and high density lipoprotein (HDL) was measured. The activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione-s-transferase (GST) was also measured. Two different doses, (500 × 2) mg and (500 × 4) mg spirulina, were given to two groups, each of which comprises 15 COPD patients.Results.All targeted blood parameters have significant difference(P=0.000)between COPD patients and controls except triglyceride (TG). Spirulina intake for 30 and 60 days at (500 × 2) mg dose has significantly reduced serum content of MDA, lipid hydroperoxide, and cholesterol(P=0.000)while increasing GSH, Vit C level(P=0.000), and the activity of SOD(P=0.000)and GST(P=0.038). At the same time, spirulina intake for 30 and 60 days at (500 × 4) mg dose has favorable significant effect(P=0.000)on all targeted blood parameters except for HDL(P=0.163).

The effect of dietary supplementation garlic oil on performance and blood parameters of New Zealand White rabbits has been studied. The garlic oil was added at graded levels of 0.0, 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75 g/kg for T1 (control), T2, T3 and T4, respectively. A total of thirty six male rabbits, 7 weeks of age and with an initial weigh of 950 g were used. There were four treatments, each with three replicates (n = 3) in randomly divided design. The parameters investigated were growth performance, carcass yield, glucose, plasma lipids profile, immunoglobulin’s G (IgG, IgA and IgM), antioxidant status and testosterone hormone. The results showed that feeding diet supplemented with garlic oil had insignificant effect on body weight, body weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, triglycerides, cholesterol, LDL and HDL. Rabbits fed the 0.5 g/kg garlic oil diet had significantly increased IgG level, hence improved immune responses and Testosterone hormone of rabbits. The colony forming units of coliform bacteria showed a significantly lower number compared with control. The present results indicate that supplemented of garlic oil at 0.5 g/kg of diet has a positive effect on HDL, immunoglobulin’s G, antioxidant status and testosterone hormone in addition to its antibacterial effect.

AbstractThe aim of this study was to investigate the effect of hempseed cake on production traits, metabolic profile and antioxidant status of lambs. The research was conducted on 20 Merinolandschaf lambs of similar live body weight (24.03 kg ± 2.22 and 24.06 ± 1.84 kg in control and experimental group, respectively). The experiment started after the weaning of lambs at their average age of 70 days. Lambs were divided by gender (50% male: 50% female) and then allocated in two groups. The research lasted for 30 days during the fattening period. Lambs in the control group were fed with feed mixtures, where main protein source was soybean meal and extruded soybean (SB), while lambs in the experimental group were fed feed mixtures in which soybean was replaced by hempseed cake (HSC) at 12% of dry matter. Higher values of daily weight gain (P<0.05) compared to SB lambs were observed from the 15th to 30th day. HSC lambs showed no significant differences in hematology and biochemical blood parameters, except for lower (P<0.001) urea concentrations on days 15th and 30th, as well as higher (P<0.05) Mg concentrations in serum on the 30th day. Hempseed cake in lambs′ diets did not influence (P>0.05) activity of the enzymes, like AST, ALT, ALP, GGT and CK, as well as SOD and GPx enzymes, thus not affecting the antioxidant status of lambs′ blood. Concentrations of DHA and n-3 fatty acids were higher (P<0.05) in HSC group than in SB group. The present study confirmed that the inclusion of HSC as soybean replacement up to 12% in the lambs’ diet is justified when considering production traits, metabolic profile and antioxidant status of Merinolandschaf lambs.

The aim of this research was to compare growth performance, nutrient utilization, rumen fermentation, blood parameters, antioxidant status, and meat colour stability of lambs fed diets that partially or completely substituted corn with sorghum. Twenty-four male German merino weaned lambs (16.19 ± 2.05 kg body weight) were divided into four treatments in a completely randomized design. The diets for four treatments contained 450 g kg−1 of ground corn (C), 300 + 150 g kg−1 of ground corn and sorghum (CSM1), 150 + 300 g kg−1 of ground corn and sorghum (CSM2) and 450 g kg−1 ground sorghum (S); all diets consisted of 70% concentrated feed and 30% Leymus chinensis hay. The lambs were fed the experimental diets for 56 d. Inclusion of sorghum tended to increase average daily weight gain and total gain (P = 0.06), and lower feed conversion ratio (P = 0.10). Significant increase in nitrogen (N) intake and fecal N excretion was observed after substitution of corn with sorghum, and the apparent digestibility of crude protein was significantly reduced. Concentrations of ammonia N in rumen fluid were affected by treatment (P = 0.01) and an interaction (P < 0.01) between treatment and sampling time. No significant effects were found on blood parameters among treatments. Replacement of corn with sorghum significantly decreased b* (yellowness) values of meat during storage. Sorghum instead of corn is feasible in lamb diets, and it has positive effects on the lamb growth and meat quality.
