<p><strong>Objectives:</strong> At this study, it is aimed to research DNA damage and oxidative stress in infants with born timely normal spontaneous vaginal delivery (NSVD) and elective caesarean.<br /><strong></strong></p><p><strong>Study Design:</strong> Healthy term babies born with NSVD (n=36) and elective caesarean section (n = 36) were included in the study. Determination of DNA damage was studied in fresh heparinized blood by the Comet Assay (mononuclear cell alkaline electrophoresis) method. Total oxidant capacity and total antioxidant capacity values were measured by using Erel method (colorimetric) on study day by autoanalysers and oxidative stress index values were calculated.<br /><strong></strong></p><p><strong>Results:</strong> Mean total oxidant capacity, oxidative stress index and DNA damage values were significantly higher in babies born with NSVD compared to those born with elective cesarean section (p &lt;0.001, p&lt;0.001, p&lt;0.001, respectively). Serum total antioxidant capacity values were not statistically significant (p=0.127).</p><p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> In this study, oxidative stress and DNA damage values of babies born with NSVD were found to be higher than those born by elective cesarean section. This suggests that there may be a relationship between the mode of delivery and oxidative stress, and that increased oxidative stress may also lead to DNA damage.</p>

Background and aims. Periodontitis is a chronic inflammation that involves nitro-oxidative stress with damaging periodontal structural effects. We aimed to evaluate the consequences of low-dose cimetidine on nitro-oxidative stress in periodontitis. Methods. A rat model of ligature-induced periodontitis was used. After two weeks, the periodontitis groups were treated with cimetidine, aminoguanidine, N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester and trolox for one week. On day 21, blood was drawn and the serum analyzed for measurement of total nitrites and nitrates, total oxidative status, total antioxidant response, and oxidative stress index. Results. Cimetidine had an inhibitory effect on the synthesis of nitric oxide (p=0.001), total oxidative status (p=0.01) and oxidative stress index (p=0.01). Total antioxidant reactivity was increased by cimetidine (p=0.01). The effects of cimetidine were almost like those of aminoguanidine, NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester, and trolox. Conclusions. Low-dose cimetidine can be used as adjunctive host modulatory therapy in chronic periodontitis because it reduces nitro-oxidative stress.

In this study, it was aimed to determine the nutrient concentrations and antioxidant activity of Achillea millefolium L. (Yarrow), which is known to have medicinal properties. For this purpose, macro and micronutrient concentrations, total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS) and oxidative stress index (OSI) of water extract Yarrow plant, which is known to be collected from Divrigi district in Sivas province, were determined. The results have shown that the yarrow plant is sufficient in terms of some macro and micronutrient concentrations, and the nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and magnesium from macro elements, iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn) and copper (Cu) from micro elements concentrations were determined as 1.01% N, 0.63% P, 2.43% K, 2.22% Ca, 0.70% Mg, 360.4 mg kg-1 Fe, 47.6 mg kg-1 Zn, 85.5 mg kg-1 Mn and 28.3 mg kg-1 Cu, respectively. It has been determined that its antioxidant potential is moderate. In addition, the plant’s oxidant capacity and oxidative stress index were found to be low.

Plants are important antioxidant sources. In our study, total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS) and oxidative stress index (OSI) of endemic Helleborus vesicarius Aucher ex Boiss.were determined. The aerial parts of the plant samples were dried and extracted with ethanol (EtOH). TAS and TOS values of plant extract were determined using Rel Assay Diagnostics kits. As a result of the studies, the TAS value of H. vesicarius was determined 5.548±0.23, the TOS value was 13.778±0.119 and the OSI value was 0.249±0.009. In this context, the plant has been shown to have significant antioxidant potential.

Introduction: Leprosy is a chronic granulomatous disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae. Oxidative stress caused by Reactive oxygen species (ROS) plays a crucial role in the pathogenesisis of leprosy.Objective: To measure the enzymatic oxidative stress indicators and oxidative stress index in patients of leprosy and compare them with healthy age & sex matched controls.Materials and Methods: In this prospective study 30 untreated leprosy patients were included in the study and matched with 60 healthy controls. Biochemistry estimation was done with blood samples and MDA (lipid peroxidation), Nitric oxide (NO), (SOD) Superoxide dismutase (antioxidant enzyme), total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status(TAS) and oxidative stress index (OSI) were estimated.Results: Highly significant rise (p<0.0001) in serum MDA, NO, TOS and OSI was seen in leprosy patients when compared with controls with highly significant decline in SOD and TAS.Conclusion: The study confirms the oxidative stress in leprosy and suggests antioxidant therapy may be used as an adjuvant in the treatment of leprosy along with MDT.

AbstractIntroduction:The study aimed at evaluating oxidative stress using malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total oxidant status (TOS), and oxidative stress index (OSI) markers in sheep naturally infected withPsoroptes ovis(Acari).Material and Methods:The study was performed on 40 sheep divided into two equal groups: a healthy group (group I) and a group naturally infected withPsoroptes ovis(group II). The sera were obtained by centrifuging blood samples collected from the vena jugularis and serum MDA level changes in the samples were measured spectrophotometrically. Commercially available test kits were used for the measurement of TAC and TOS levels. The percentage ratio of TOS level to TAC level was accepted as OSI.Results:The serum malondialdehyde, total oxidant status levels, and oxidative stress index increased significantly (P < 0.01) in group II, while the serum total antioxidant capacity levels decreased significantly (P < 0.01) in this group. Negative correlations between total antioxidant capacity and total oxidant status and total antioxidant capacity and malondialdehyde, and a positive correlation between total oxidant status and malondialdehyde were found in infected sheep.Conclusion:The obtained results indicated the relationship between oxidant/antioxidant imbalance andPsoroptes ovisinfection in sheep. Their MDA, TAC, TOS, and OSI markers may be used to determine the oxidative stress in natural infections withPsoroptes ovis.
