The Upper James Estuary – A Study in Water Quality Management

The James River has its head waters in the Allegheny Mountains and flows generally southeasterly to Hampton Roads, Chesapeake Bay and thence to the Atlantic Ocean. Below Richmond, Virginia, the river is tidal with the channel meandering through the coastal plains. Below Hopewell it widens to a broad estuary, with a deep navigable channel bordered by tide marshes. The upper estuary, between Richmond and Hopewell, is heavily used for water supply, recreation, and industrial development. The water entering the estuary a few miles upstream of Richmond is of good quality. However, as one reaches Richmond, the quality of the water deteriorates. There are eleven major discharging municipalities and industries within a stretch of twenty two river miles between Richmond and Hopewell. The major factors contributing to water quality problems below the City of Richmond stem from the intermittent discharge from combined sewer overflows (CSOs) coupled with the continuous discharge from the City's sewage treatment plant. The CSOs contribute a large quantity of soluble BOD, suspended solids, settleable solids, and fecal coliforms to the estuary. The City's sewage treatment plant continuously discharges large quantities of ammonia-nitrogen and phosphorus, in addition to BOD and suspended solids. Rational Management and use of the waters of the upper James estuary appear to be critical. The objectives of this paper, therefore, are the discussion of the present water quality and the wastewater discharge reductions required in order to meet certain water quality and water use objectives.

In the UK there are over 7000 small works which treat the sewage from populations of less than 10,000. Many of these works are at risk of non-compliance with effluent quality consents and options for improving the standard of treatment are being pursued by many utilities. WRc and Anglian Water Services have developed designs for packaged sewage treatment plants to serve populations in the range of 1000-10,000. A demonstration plant has been constructed at the Waterbeach STW of Anglian Water to serve a population of about 6,500. Target effluent quality is 15:20:5mg/l of BOD, SS and ammonia nitrogen respectively on a 95 percentile basis. Following plant commissioning a process performance evaluation programme was commenced in February 1991. Nitrification was established after about 6 weeks of operation but suspended solids values have been affected by the presence of a stable foam on the surface of the aeration tank. Process modifications have reduced the effect of this phenomenon substantially and effluent quality has improved.

The designed capacity of Jinan Citys wastewater treatment plant (the second sewage treatment plant) is 200,000 m3/d, and the biological treatment process is DE-type oxidation ditch process. Because of self-control requirements, equipment quality and management , alternat-ing operation of anoxia and oxygen can not be achieved. Acting in concert with the engineering of south-to-north water diversion and water quality improvement of the Xiaoqing River, water quality improvement and transformation of nitrogen and phosphorus removal process was condu-cted. By increasing the diversion wall, digestive reflux and other measures, the DE oxidat-ion ditch process was transformed into A2/O process, while the depth of V-efficiency fiber filter processing and chemical phosphorus removal process were increased. After the upgrade, the process is stable, the effluent quality reached an A standard of " discharge standard of pollutants for municipal wastewater treatment plant" (GB18918-2002).

Changes of microbial indices of water quality in the Vistula and Brda rivers as a result of sewage treatment plant operationThis paper reports the results of studies of microbiological changes in the water quality of the Vistula and Brda rivers after the opening of sewage treatment plants in Bydgoszcz. The study involved determining the microbiological parameters of water quality. Based on the results obtained, it was found that the quality of the water in both rivers had improved decidedly after the opening of the plants, although an increased number of individual groups of microorganisms was found at the treated sewage outlet from one of the plants.

INTRODUCTION: Brazil's Federal District (FD) has seen steep population growth in recent years, and this has increased demand for high-quality water. AIM: The present work aims to evaluate the quality of surface water from two water bodies in the FD at six sampling points, three of which are in the Sobradinho River (the receiving body of a sewage treatment plant effluent) and three in the Jardim River (located in an agricultural region). METHODS: Analyses were carried out every thirty days, for twelve months, covering rainy and dry seasons. Parameters were analyzed such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), conductivity, turbidity, total hardness, main ions, total and fecal coliforms (E. coli) in water. Ecotoxicological evaluation was also performed, using the micro-crustacean Ceriodaphnia dubia. RESULTS: Data of physical and chemical determinations showed DO, conductivity, Cl-, NO3-, SO4(2-) and Na+ to be important in indicating contamination by urban effluents. On the subject of biological parameters - E. coli and ecotoxicological evaluation - the former was seen to be more effective in the urban area. However, in the countryside, the assay with C. dubia proved to be the most sensitive, although less than ideal, because the organism is very sensitive to low water hardness. CONCLUSIONS: The fecal coliform indicator (E. coli) was the most effective one for comparing water quality in the two basins, mainly for the urbanized one, while ecotoxicity assays with C. dubia were harmed by the natural chemical composition of the water.

Bromma sewage treatment plant is the second largest plant in Stockholm with a design flow of 160,000 m3/d. The wastewater is treated mechanically, chemically by pre-precipitation with ferrous sulphate, and biologically by the activated sludge process. The requirements for the plant are 8 mg BOD7/l, 0.4 mg P/l and 2 mg NH4+-N/l. The requirement for ammonia refers to the period July-October. In order to meet those rather stringent requirements, the biological step was expanded 3 years ago with 6 new sedimentation tanks. The 6 new tanks have the same area as the 6 old ones but they have only a depth of 3.7 m compared with the depth of the old tanks, 5.7 m. Experience from the first years of operation of the new tanks is that these tanks are more sensitive and less efficient than the older ones. It seems that the effluent suspended solids concentration from the old tanks is less influenced by rapid flow variations than the concentration in the effluent from the new secondary sedimentation tanks. During the nitrification period denitrification takes place to some degree in the secondary sedimentation tanks. This may cause loss of solids and it has been observed that the deeper old tanks usually produce an effluent of better quality and seem to be less influenced by denitrification than the new ones.

Causes of polytrophism of three lakes in the Wdzydze Landscape ParkIn the lakes Cheb and Słupino, located in the Wdzydze Landscape Park the quality of waters has been deteriorating in recent years. In the hydrologic year 2009 the quality of water was examined three times. Monthly measurements on the lake inflows and outflows were carried out 12 times to determine biogenic loads. In 2010 the supplementary measurements of biogenic loads were taken in the streams five times. According to Vollenweider's criterion, the loads of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds are too big, the heaviest to Lake Cheb. The discharge from the new sewage treatment plant is directed by the inflows into this lake. A similar situation takes place in the inflow to Lake Schodno. Paradoxically, in some catchments the construction of the sewage treatment plant may result in the deterioration of lake water quality.

A pharmaceutical factory in Wuhan produces many pharmaceutical wastewaters every day. The wastewater raw water quality indexes are: the concentration of COD,BOD5, NH3-N,TP is 300,000mg/L, 200,000mg/L, 450mg/L,900 mg/L ; By the SBBR treatment, the effluent water quality indexes are:750mg/L,350mg/L,1.20mg/L,5mg/L,and the effluent water can accord with Wastewater quality standards for discharge to municipal sewers (CJ 343-2010) and be discharged after treatment in the sewage treatment plant by municipal sewers.
