As the emphasis of elementary school mathematics moves toward more problem solving and more use of technology, students' understanding of concepts and ideas will become increasingly important. Without clear understanding of concepts and ideas, students are unlikely to be able to apply mathematics in everyday situations. This article illustrates one way to use data base software to develop conceptual understanding.

Abstract The concept of ecotourism evolves differently in developing and developed nations due to which the basic principles of ecotourism are in question. The existing literature on ecotourism suggests ambiguity in conceptual understanding of ecotourism. Due to this qualm, ecotourism is evolving into various forms. Different stakeholders with varying objectives related to ecotourism make it further difficult to form the consensus on what constitutes ecotourism. Without the clear understanding of ecotourism, it is difficult to evolve ethics on which the ecotourism principles are based. The focus of this research is to find out the principle components or themes of ecotourism using a content analysis for the development of ecotourism policy and applications. This study identified six key components of ecotourism which are widely accepted by researchers and could be used to shape the fundamental understanding of ecotourism. These themes are: (1) Nature oriented travel; (2) Support of conservation; (3) Learning and appreciation; (4) Socio-economic development of local area; (5) Support and respect for local culture and (6) Local people (area) participation.

Chronic pain is a common and important problem, but many healthcare practitioners, even those in pain management settings, do not have a clear understanding of modern pain science. Misconceptions about pain can be a major roadblock to effective interventions, including Yoga therapy. This paper introduces the latest conceptual understanding of how the nervous system experiences pain, and then addresses the limitations and inaccuracies of common beliefs about pain. The paper then applies this new understanding of pain to Yoga therapy for people in persistent pain. Research on Yoga for chronic pain is reviewed, and general guidelines for teaching Yoga to people with pain are offered. Modern science does not support a highly prescriptive approach to âsana or Yoga practice for those with chronic pain. However, a holistic, individualized approach to Yoga therapy is an effective strategy for helping people with chronic pain.

It is thought that calcium and/or magnesium may play important roles in polymorphonuclear (PMN) leukocyte functions such as chemotaxis, adhesion and phagocytosis. Yet, a clear understanding of the biological roles of these ions has awaited the development of techniques which permit a selective alteration of intracellular ion concentrations. Recently, treatment of cells with the ionophore A23187 has been used to alter intracellular divalent cation concentrations. This ionophore is a lipid soluble antibiotic produced by Streptomyces chartreusensis that complexes with both calcium and magnesium (3) and is believed to carry these ions across biological membranes (4). Biochemical investigations of human PMN leukocytes demonstrate that cells treated with A23187 and extracellular calcium release their lysosomal enzymes into the extracellular medium without rupturing and releasing their soluble cytoplasmic enzymes (5,6). The aim of the present study and and a companion report (7) was to investigate the structural changes that occur in leukocytes during ionophore-induced lysosomal enzyme release.

The present study seeks to explain the techniques and procedures, the concepts and categories with which the interpretation of the object studied, that is - documents related to the High School  Technical Professional Education Policy - implemented in Bahia / Brazil, specifically, the reference regarding Paul de Bryne’s quadripolar approach (1977), which provide the theoretical-methodological density of the object studied in relation to the epistemological, theoretical, technical and morphological poles. In this perspective, it is agreed with Gamboa (1987), in the sense that, the accomplishment of a research is not the fulfilment of ‘methodological ritualism’ with a ‘theoretical fad’ in order not to repeat what commonly happens in research in education, in progressively more intense way, of eclectic attempts that randomly collect techniques, methods and theoretical references without a clear understanding of the epistemological foundations and the philosophical implications of the different paths of knowledge.

An objective to develop a labor protection engineering stand was set forth as part of the research and development work "Carrying out theoretical and experimental investigations and development of stands for demonstrating the danger of electric shock at a training ground" for visually demonstrating the danger of injuring a person by touch and step voltages in 3…35 kV medium voltage electric networks. The technical solutions for practically implementing the stand were adopted based on an analysis of regulatory documents, conditions under which dangerous touch and step voltages occur, the most typical human injury cases, and calculation results. Specialists of the National Research University Moscow Power Engineering Institute Department of High Voltage Engineering and Electrophysics, working jointly with specialists of PJSC Rosseti Moscow Region have developed, manufactured, tested, and put into operation a stand for demonstrating human injury by the touch and step voltages when a 10 kV wire falls on the ground, on a car, and when a fault of a live wire on the overhead line support occurs. With the stand having been put in use at the PJSC Rosseti Moscow Region Training Center Ground, this will allow the staff to form a clear understanding of the electric shock danger, to focus on the effects caused by voltage and current, and thereby significantly reduce electrical injuries.

Understanding Socially Responsible Investing and Its Implications for Islamic Investment Industry // // // // // Social, ethical and environmental concerns have been used as important consideration for investment decision by an increasing number of investors. This can be seen by the size and growth of the socially responsible investment (SRI) industry in the developed economies. At the same time, scholars and commentators of Islamic finance have also called for Islamic investment industry to learn from the experience of SRI in incorporating social responsibility issues in the investment process, in line with the ethical principles of Islam and the overall objective of the Shari’ah (Maqasid al-Shari’ah). This would require Islamic investment sector to have a clear understanding of the SRI industry in order to effectively benefit from its experience. This is particularly critical due to the significant diversity of investors and complexity in the issues and strategies adopted in the SRI industry. Hence, this paper adds to the Islamic investment literature by providing an extensive  and systematic survey of SRI industry in terms of its (i) underlying motivations and values; (ii) issues of concerns; (iii) types of investors; and (iv) screening strategies. It then synthesizes these components within the context of the ‘value-based’ investors. This synthesized framework offers a useful tool for Islamic investment practitioners to understand the theoretical and practical aspects of SRI. Subsequently, the paper highlights important implications of the findings for Islamic investment industry in terms of the issues that it needs to consider in emulating SRI practices and a number of lessons that it can learn from the SRI experience.
