Este artigo apresenta a integração de duas metodologias que visam o desenvolvimento das Soft Skills, integrando a metodologia de Aprendizagem Baseada em Projeto (Project Based Learning – PBL) a um método prático para a integração de habilidades e mentalidade inovadora no desenvolvimento de soluções, conhecido por Design Thinking - DT. Esta integração se deu no âmbito de um projeto de intercâmbio internacional com equipes formadas por alunos de países diferentes, oriundos de cursos diversos, com outros idiomas, cultura e base de conhecimento, desenvolvido ao longo de dez semanas. Levar aos alunos a formação em Soft Skills nesta multiplicidade se tornou um desafio ainda maior por ter ocorrido em um período de pandemia. Os resultados da integração PBL-DT demonstram o grande potencial destes métodos utilizados de maneira integrada, e atingiu aos objetivos do projeto.

AbstractDrawing on the work of Lee Shulman, this article reviews literature exploring the concept of signature pedagogies, which are described as having have surface, deep and implicit structures. These structures are complex and changing; concerned with habits of head, hand and heart. Emerging from professional education and now being explored in STEM and Humanities education, they are characteristic forms of teaching and learning that are common across a sector. Common themes emerge from within a range of disciplines including art, built environment, design, music, religious, social work and teacher education. These include the roles of the curriculum, the teacher, the learning environment, as well as capability, uncertainty and the challenges associated with signature pedagogies. Focusing on literature from design education, the paper explores the nature of signature pedagogy in design and technology, as a tool for professional discourse. The conclusions propose a discursive framework for design and technology education in which the structures are tied together by the three fundamental activities of ideating, realising and critiquing; more commonly thought of as designing, making and evaluating. The deep structure being project-based learning, undergirded by the implicit values and attitudes associated with design thinking; including collaboration, creativity, empathy, iteration and problem solving. Design and technology education has something unique to offer the broad and balanced curriculum through its signature pedagogies and the way that knowledge is experienced by learners.

Often we find the fact that skills gaps begin with the basic idea that many jobs exist, but skilled workers do not. The relationship exists between labor readiness, business and industrial development, and educational institutions have been around for a long time. However, this relationship cannot refute the fact that prospective employees are not ready to enter the workplace in the future. The Law of the Republic of Indonesia concerning the national education system addresses the importance of training in creative thinking skills by stating that the education system must develop the potential of students to be religious, respectful, well-educated, and competent in thinking creatively, independently, democratically, and responsibly. While empirical studies show that Indonesian students have unsatisfactory creative thinking skills. This study aims to describe how to train Creative Thinking Skills through project-based learning in preparing the Workforce to face global competition. From the results of the discussion it was concluded: 1) The government needs to be more serious in entering tertiary education and setting targets for maximum workforce readiness. 2) Educational institutions in their learning activities need to improve their mastery of high-level thinking skills in determining their educational success by improving high-level cognitive functions (metacognition, metamemory and metacomprehension, or assessing the truth of one's own memories; solving problems, or taking appropriate steps when dealing with unknown things, and think critically, or evaluate the quality of ideas). 3) For most educators today who are well connected and driven by technology, the mastery of technology literacy in education is still lacking, therefore mastery of technology literacy needs to be improved at the level of the teachers in this country. 4) Potential to integrate Project Based Learning (PBL) in the classroom to improve students' soft skills which in turn will ensure greater results for them in the future. To achieve that, their soft skills need to be improved by using the PBL approach. This approach is relevant to the concept of 21st century learning, especially in education.

This chapter introduces different methods for how to incorporate inquiry-based learning (IBL) practices with i2Flex methodology, both virtually as well as in the traditional world language classroom model using updated and relevant 21st century skills. Using the teacher as a constructivist model, the question formulation technique, design thinking, content and project based learning, learning among others are all explored in depth so the WL teacher can apply theory through practical examples that support a global understanding and context. World languages can be ESL, Spanish, Greek, Nahuatl, or any other WL(s) taught and spoken across cultures.

Amy M. Burns presents the approach of Project-Based Learning (PBL) in the elementary music classroom. The PBL approach focuses on the students learning the skills of research and problem-solving by answering essential questions over a period of time. Burns and Cherie Herring contributed to the PBL activities. In addition, they also address the process of Design Thinking, where students problem-solve solutions using the method of empathizing, defining, ideating, creating a prototype, testing, and going through the process again to redefine and improve. Burns and Herring demonstrate how PBL and DT can span across the curriculum, while still keeping music at the core of the learning process in the music classroom. The projects are versatile and can be used in young to older elementary classrooms from one device in the classroom to a 1:1 classroom.

In August 2013, the Purdue University President and Board of Trustees designated the transformation of the College of Technology into the Purdue Polytechnic Institute as one of Purdue’s “Big Moves”. This transformation requires changes of enormous breadth and depth for everyone in the college. Now, almost half-way through the transformation, milestones and expectations continue to be met. However, much work is still to be done to fully execute a successful transformation. The transformation continues to allow faculty extraordinary opportunities to revise many parts of the college, including curricula, instruction methods, learning spaces, etc. A key characteristic of the transformation is creating learning environments that are student-centered with innovative instruction techniques. TECH 120 – “Design Thinking in Technology”, is a freshman level survey course designed to develop a student’s perspective and enhance their skills in living and working in a technological society while introducing them to the College of Technology — now Purdue Polytechnic. Prior to the fall 2015 semester, Purdue Polytechnic New Albany decided to redesign portions of their TECH 120 course. The aim was to improve team project-based learning opportunities while incorporating modernized teaching methods. With a fresh set of eyes and collaboration between new and tenured faculty the projects, lectures, and assessments were all analyzed looking for areas for higher level of innovation and creativity. The aim for the overall effort was to increase student success rate (i.e. successful completion of assigned project tasks) while improving the alignment with elements of the transformation. In past semesters, the course consisted of a mixture of traditional instructor-led lectures and a series of team projects. Each individual project part was intended to build upon each other while promoting the successful completion of a much larger final task. At the core of each project was LEGO® MINDSTORMS® NXT. The second generation set in the MINDSTORMS series is a programmable robotics kit that is based on robotics technology similar to that used in industry today. Each group (3–4 students) were given their own kit at the beginning of the semester. The final project statement was to design and build an autonomous robot which could identify and follow a light source attached to an instructor’s robot, which would be driven around a room. This task proved to be difficult and had a low success rate. The new project is to design and build a robot that autonomously draws the initials (first and last name) of each team member within an assigned writing zone on a poster. The constant and open collaboration between the two TECH 120 instructors and the incorporation of student input proved to be important during the redesign. The success rate at the end of the semester increased. From course surveys, data also shows that students’ enjoyment and interest in the final project increased. This short paper will describe the introduction to a team project-based activity in a polytechnic setting which uses modernized teaching methods. Preliminary findings and observations will be presented.

This research describes a pilot project which aimed to introduce CDIO-type (Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate), project-based learning through a community-based project in a third year Material Science module. The project formed part of an agriculture research initiative, and relied on interdisciplinary research collaboration between engineering, social sciences, management, entrepreneurship, and industrial arts. The initiative seeks to develop an agribusiness solution that will create an open-market, growth-oriented food economy. As part of the initiative, engineering students, participating in teams, worked alongside a community of urban farmers, most of whom are working poor, so as to develop appropriate, intermediate technology/ies that could support the farmers. This was informed by the need to have students demonstrate high level understanding of disciplinary content, but also to engage in human-centered design thinking and practice.
