Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is frequently associated with negative psychological outcomes. This study explores the relationship between self-esteem, ADHD symptoms and parental stress. It compares children with ADHD, children with epilepsy (E) and typical developmental controls (TD). Participants included 65 children (aged 9-12 yrs) and their parents. The assessment was conducted by Multidimensional Self-Concept Scale (MSCS), Parent Stress Index (PSI) and Conners' Parent Rating Scales–Revised. Significant differences were found in Social, Competence and Academic areas of self-esteem between children with ADHD, with E and TD. Moreover, parents of children with ADHD showed a higher overall stress than both other groups. In conclusion, it seems important to evaluate the psychological aspects of ADHD con-dition, both in children and in parents, in order to suggest an individual multimodal treatment.

Abstract.This paper addresses two aims: a) to analyze differences in the stress of parents of children and adolescents with ADHD with high and low scores on success atributes related to resilience; b) to study the relationship between these success attributes and the level of success of life satisfaction of children in different domains. For this, 46 families completed the questionnaires of Assessment Attributes Success, the domain’s Father Parenting Stress Index and Life Satisfaction Scales. The statistical analysis demonstrated significant differences in the parenting stress of children with ADHD and low and high scores on the attributes of self-awareness, proactivity, perseverance and goal setting. Life satisfaction was associated with the manifestation of success attributes. Implications for research and clinical practice of these findings are discussed.Keywords: ADHD, resilience, parental stress, life satisfaction.Resumen.El presente trabajo aborda dos objetivos: a) analizar las diferencias en el estrés de los padres de niños y adolescentes con TDAH con altas y bajas puntuaciones en factores de éxito relacionados con la resiliencia b) estudiar la relación entre estos factores de éxito y el nivel de satisfacción con la vida del niño en distintos dominios. Para ello, 46 familias cumplimentaron los cuestionarios de Evaluación de Atributos de Éxito, el dominio del padre del Parenting Stress Index y las Escalas de Satisfacción Vital. Los resultados indican diferencias estadísticamente significativas en el estrés de los padres de niños con TDAH y puntuaciones altas y bajas en autoconciencia, proactividad, perseverancia y establecimiento de metas. La satisfacción vital se asoció a los atributos de éxito. Se comentan las implicaciones para la investigación y para la práctica clínica de estos hallazgos.Palabras clave: TDAH, resiliencia, estrés parental, satisfacción con la vida.

Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are characterized by a deviant pattern of brain oscillations during resting state, particularly elevated theta power and increased theta/alpha and theta/beta ratios that are related to cognitive functioning. Physical fitness has been found beneficial to cognitive performance in a wide age population. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between physical fitness and resting-state electroencephalographic (EEG) oscillations in children with ADHD. EEG was recorded during eyes-open resting for 28 children (23 boys and 5 girls, 8.66 ± 1.10 years) with ADHD, and a battery of physical fitness assessments including flexibility, muscular endurance, power, and agility tests were administered. The results indicated that ADHD children with higher power fitness exhibited a smaller theta/alpha ratio than those with lower power fitness. These findings suggest that power fitness may be associated with improved attentional self-control in children with ADHD.

Background: Attention-deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the single most frequent reason for attendance at Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) in Ireland. Research has suggested that parents of children with ADHD experience more parenting stress than parents of non-clinical controls, yet routine treatment for ADHD rarely addresses parental well-being. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have been found to result in a reduction in parental stress. Method: An adapted Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) intervention was delivered to parents (n = 23) of children with ADHD recruited from CAMHS and ADHD Ireland. Results: Following the intervention a significant improvement was documented within the social relationships domain of quality of life (WHOQOL-BREF) and a significant reduction on the child hyperactivity scale of the Strengths and Difficulties (SDQ) questionnaire. Conclusion: This pilot study suggests that an MBSR intervention is both feasible and effective for parents whose children have ADHD. Larger scale studies need to be conducted before inclusion in routine CAMHS.

Parents and teachers play a significant role in the diagnosis of ADHD in children in the clinical setting. With the same in consideration a study was conducted to compare the perception between parents and teachers on the rating scales for ADHD children. The study was conducted on a sample of parents and teachers of 100 children diagnosed as having ADHD as per ICD-10 diagnostic criteria. A newly constructed and standardized parent rating scale for parents of ADHD children and attention deficit comprehensive teacher rating scale for teachers was administered on the target sample. Results indicate that there was statistically no significant difference in the rating of perception between parents and teachers on four dimensions, viz (i) attention (ii) hyperactivity (iii) social skills (iv) oppositional behaviour of ADHD children. To verify these findings, positive correlation was found between parents and teachers perception on all the four dimensions.J Med Sci.2010;13(1);11-14

Background: There is an ongoing discussion whether thyroid hormones are involved in the development and course of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Since obesity is associated with both higher thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and free triiodothyronine (fT3) concentrations and increased rates of ADHD, we hypothesized that overweight children with ADHD show higher TSH and fT3 concentrations compared to overweight children without ADHD. Methods: TSH, fT3, fT4, and leptin levels were analyzed in 230 children (60.9% boys, 9.3 ± 1.7 years old, 35.7% migration background). The children were divided into four groups (I = 26 overweight children with ADHD, II = 56 normal-weight children with ADHD, III = 66 overweight children without ADHD, and IV = 82 normal-weight children without ADHD). Severity of ADHD was determined by the parent version of the Connors 3® rating scales. Results: Overweight children with ADHD did not differ significantly from overweight children without ADHD with respect to TSH, fT3, or fT4 concentrations. Comparing the thyroid hormones between the four groups also demonstrated no significant differences for TSH and fT4 concentrations. fT3 concentrations were significantly higher in normal-weight children with ADHD compared to normal-weight children without ADHD. Inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity scores were not significantly related to TSH or fT3 in multiple regression analyses adjusted for age, gender, and migration background. In these analyses, TSH was associated with BMI SDS (β coefficient 0.19 ± 0.12, p = 0.002) and leptin (exp[β coefficient] 1.87 ± 1.36, p < 0.001). fT3 (β coefficient 0.06 ± 0.05, p = 0.009) and leptin (exp[β coefficient] 1.17 ± 1.13, p = 0.009) were also associated with BMI SDS. Conclusions: Our findings confirm the relation between overweight and thyroid hormones but point against the hypothesis that thyroid hormones might link overweight and ADHD in children.

In Module 3, parents learn to develop and maintain a consistent household schedule and daily routines for their child and themselves. All children benefit from consistency, but children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can be especially reactive when their environment is unpredictable or chaotic. External structure can scaffold the child with ADHD’s own sense of organization. In many families, parents of children with ADHD struggle with executive function or attention difficulties themselves. Teaching parents to implement a consistent daily schedule and to more effectively manage their time can reduce the parental stress that can contribute to harsh or negative parenting and poor parent–child relationship. In this module, you will work with parents on the basics of scheduling and time management, with the goal of creating a more organized and harmonious household.

African American adolescents in poorer neighborhoods experience significant sanctions related to drug use and delinquency. Parental stress (i.e. substance use, mental distress, and incarceration) is associated with youth drug use and delinquency. We examined whether high self-esteem and positive future orientation mediated parental stress and youth substance use and delinquency. Demographic, family stress, future orientation, self-esteem, and drug use data were collected from 578 youths. Major findings indicated that self-esteem mediated the relationship between family stress and both drug use and delinquency. Future mediated the relationship between family stress and delinquency. Resiliency factors may promote positive development for low-income youth.

Until recently, little was known about the epidemiology of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults. Bottom-up studies following children with ADHD into adolescence had shown variable rates of persistence, some of which depended on the definitions used. The traditional diagnosis was complicated by the introduction of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Third Edition, which stated that ADHD could be diagnosed with inattentive symptoms alone. This resulted in diagnostic inconsistency as earlier investigations demanded the presence of hyperactivity while others did not. Diagnosis also depended on the site, the cohort, whether interviews versus rating scales were employed, and whether the subject or their parent were the source of information.

Two measures, the Maternal Social Support Index and the Parenting Stress Index were used to assess parents' stress and social support among mothers of 7-yr.-old children born at very low birthweight. The MSSI Total scores did not significantly correlate with the PSI Total Child, Total Parent, or Total Stress Indices, although they were significant, but modestly correlated with scores on the Parent subscale of Social Isolation. The relationship between parental stress and maternal social support requires continued investigation.

Previous studies suggest that parasympathetic functions support sensory behaviours. However, the relationship between sensory behaviours and parasympathetic functions remain inconclusive and inconsistent among children with and without attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This research aims to examine the sensory behaviours and resting parasympathetic functions among children with and without ADHD. We compared sensory behaviours and baseline parasympathetic functions of 64 participants, with 42 typically developing and 24 ADHD male children aged 7–12 years. Sensory behaviours were evaluated using the sensory profile. Baseline parasympathetic functions were indexed using the normalized unit of heart rate variability high-frequency bands (HF n.u.). Children underwent an experimental protocol consisting of watching a silent cartoon movie while HF n.u. is continuously monitored, within a controlled environment. The results of this research showed significantly lower HF n.u. (t(64) = 7.84, p < 0.01 ) and sensory processing total score (t(64) = 14.13 =  p < 0.01 ) among children with ADHD compared to their typically developing peers. Likewise, a significant moderate positive correlation (r = 0.36, p < 0.05 ) was found between the HF n.u. and sensory profile total scores among children with ADHD. Children with ADHD have significantly lower resting state parasympathetic functions compared to their typically developing peers.
