A Swinging and Self-Actuating Friction Drive Device Used in Large-Scale Rotary Devices

Background: Large-scale rotary devices often employ friction drives in order to be manufactured easily and usually select a large driving radius to reduce the friction forces needed. In traditional devices, the driver and driven friction wheels are required to be of higher roundness to avoid slipping between them. This makes the driven friction wheel difficult to be machined. In addition, generating adequate contact load between contacting surfaces is essential for friction drives, and the best way to achieve it is self-actuating loading. Objective: The purpose of this paper is to propose and analyze a patent about a new friction drive device, in which the driver friction wheel can roll along with the driven friction wheel throughout, and the contact load between the driver and driven friction wheels can be generated on the torque demand. Methods: By using two swinging gearboxes, the two driver friction wheels are both swinging, and thus both can roll along with the driven friction wheel floatingly. Therefore, the driven wheel can have some deviation in roundness. Besides, this design offers a condition to construct a torque-actuated loading mechanism. Driven by the input torque, each driver wheel turns and exerts a friction force on the driven wheel, and then the driven wheel applies a reactive force to each driver wheel. This reactive force tends to pull the driver wheel to the driven wheel, producing a wedging action. Thus, an appreciable amount of contact load between the driver and driven wheels will be generated. Results: The results show the contact load between the driver and driven friction wheels is directly proportional to the resistant torque acting on the friction drive device. The results also show that a “frictional locking” condition for the device to avoid slipping between the driver and driven friction wheels is needed and it depends on the geometric parameters of the device. Conclusion: A swinging and self-actuating friction drive device is developed by using two swinging gearboxes. Design principles were described and a design example for this friction drive device was demonstrated. This kind of friction drive device not only offers an alternative way to drive large-scale rotary devices, but also develops a new method to realize self-actuating loading for friction drives.

Common pool resource (CPR) management has the potential to overcome the collective action dilemma, defined as the tendency for individual users to exploit natural resources and contribute to a tragedy of the commons. Design principles associated with effective CPR management help to ensure that arrangements work to the mutual benefit of water users. This study contributes to current research on CPR management by examining the process of implementing integrated management planning through the lens of CPR design principles. Integrated management plans facilitate the management of a complex common pool resource, ground and surface water resources having a hydrological connection. Water governance structures were evaluated through the use of participatory methods and observed records of interannual changes in rainfall, evapotranspiration, and ground water levels across the Northern High Plains. The findings, documented in statutes, field interviews and observed hydrologic variables, point to the potential for addressing large-scale collective action dilemmas, while building on the strengths of local control and participation. The feasibility of a “bottom up” system to foster groundwater resilience was evidenced by reductions in groundwater depths of 2 m in less than a decade.

Abstract A new method of harvesting and curing breeder's seed peanuts in Virginia was initiated that would 1) reduce the labor requirements, 2) maintain a high level of germination, 3) maintain varietal purity at 100%, and 4) reduce the risk of frost damage. Three possible harvesting and curing methods were studied. The traditional stack-pole method satisfied the latter 3 objectives, but not the first. The windrow-combine method satisfied the first 2 objectives, but not the last 2. The direct harvesting method satisfied all four objectives. The experimental equipment and curing procedures for direct harvesting had been developed but not tested on a large scale for seed harvesting. This method has been used in Virginia to produce breeder's seed of 3 peanut varieties (Florigiant, VA 72R and VA 61R) during five years. Compared to the stackpole method, labor requirements have been reduced, satisfactory levels of germination and varietal purity have been obtained, and the risk of frost damage has been minimized.

Abstract Motivation At RECOMB-CG 2018, we presented NJMerge and showed that it could be used within a divide-and-conquer framework to scale computationally intensive methods for species tree estimation to larger datasets. However, NJMerge has two significant limitations: it can fail to return a tree and, when used within the proposed divide-and-conquer framework, has O(n5) running time for datasets with n species. Results Here we present a new method called ‘TreeMerge’ that improves on NJMerge in two ways: it is guaranteed to return a tree and it has dramatically faster running time within the same divide-and-conquer framework—only O(n2) time. We use a simulation study to evaluate TreeMerge in the context of multi-locus species tree estimation with two leading methods, ASTRAL-III and RAxML. We find that the divide-and-conquer framework using TreeMerge has a minor impact on species tree accuracy, dramatically reduces running time, and enables both ASTRAL-III and RAxML to complete on datasets (that they would otherwise fail on), when given 64 GB of memory and 48 h maximum running time. Thus, TreeMerge is a step toward a larger vision of enabling researchers with limited computational resources to perform large-scale species tree estimation, which we call Phylogenomics for All. In nanomaterials, the surface or the subsurface structures influence the friction behaviors greatly. In this work, nanoscale friction behaviors between a rigid cylinder tip and a single crystal copper substrate are studied by molecular dynamics simulation. Nanoscale textured surfaces are modeled on the surface of the substrate to represent the surface structures, and the spacings between textures are seen as defects on the surface. Nano-defects are prepared at the subsurface of the substrate. The effects of depth, orientation, width and shape of textured surfaces on the average friction forces are investigated, and the influence of subsurface defects in the substrate is also studied. Compared with the smooth surface, textured surfaces can improve friction behaviors effectively. The textured surfaces with a greater depth or smaller width lead to lower friction forces. The surface with 45° texture orientation produces the lowest average friction force among all the orientations. The influence of the shape is slight, and the v-shape shows a lower average friction force. Besides, the subsurface defects in the substrate make the sliding process unstable and the influence of subsurface defects on friction forces is sensitive to their positions.

A new method tracing the load-deflection equilibrium path of a truss with doubly nonlinearity is proposed. The total global stiffness matrix equation has been formulated in terms of nodal coordinates, iteration formulations has been written through adopting a single control coordinate, so that an new method tracing the load-deflection equilibrium path has been proposed. Analysis results of Star dome truss and Schwedeler dome truss have shown that the proposed method is stable numerically, quick in convergence, high in degree of accuracy and easy in use. The proposed method can be used for large-scale truss structure.

In this article, a theoretical analysis of the flows arising in the cross sections of fluid and gas flows is performed. Such flows are subdivided into secondary flows and coherent structures. From experimental studies it is known that both types of flows are long-lived large-scale movements (LSM) stretched along the flow. The relative stability of the vortices is traditionally explained by the fact that the viscous friction forces that inhibit the rotation are compensated by the intensification of the swirl when moving slowly rotating peripheral layers to the center of the vortex due to longitudinal tension. An analysis of this mechanism made it possible to develop a relatively simple model of vortex structures in which the viscous friction forces and axial expansion are considered to be infinitesimal. Under these assumptions, one can use the equations of motion of an ideal fluid in the variables “stream function - vorticity”. It is shown that under certain assumptions these equations take the form of a wave equation, and the boundary conditions are the condition that the stream function on the solid walls of the flow equals zero. The obtained solutions of the wave equation describe the following special cases: Goertler’s vortices between rotating cylinders, secondary flows in a pipe with a square cross section, swirling flow in a round pipe, paired vortex after bend of the pipe. The physical sense of more complex solutions of the wave equation has become clear relatively recently. Very similar structures were found in experimental studies using orthogonal decomposition (POD) of a turbulent pulsations field. This may mean that the eigenfunctions in the POD correspond to coherent structures that really arise in the flow. The results obtained confirm the hypothesis that secondary flows and coherent structures have a common nature. The solutions obtained in this paper can be used in processing the experiment as eigenfunctions for the orthogonal decomposition method. In addition, they can be used in direct numerical simulation (DNS) of turbulent flows

Abstract A variable pressure damper (VPD) is used here to adjusted the friction force on the valve spring to investigate the relation between the friction force and the valve bouncing phenomenon. The friction force on the valve spring is found experimentally, and the corresponding friction coefficient is also determined. Dynamic valve displacements at different speeds with different friction forces are calibrated. Bouncing and floating of the valve are observed when the camshaft reaches high speed. From the measured valve displacement, the VPD is shown to have significant improvement in reducing valve bouncing distance and eliminating floating. However, experimental results indicate that the valve bouncing can not be eliminated completely when the camshaft speed is at 2985 rpm.
