The redox state of Earth’s atmosphere has undergone a dramatic shift over geologic time from reducing to strongly oxidizing, and this shift has been coupled with changes in ocean redox structure and the size and activity of Earth’s biosphere. Delineating this evolutionary trajectory remains a major problem in Earth system science. Significant insights have emerged through the application of redox-sensitive geochemical systems. Existing and emerging biogeochemical modeling tools are pushing the limits of the quantitative constraints on ocean–atmosphere redox that can be extracted from geochemical tracers. This work is honing our understanding of the central role of Earth’s biosphere in shaping the long-term redox evolution of the ocean–atmosphere system.

The Water Framework Directive (WFD) focuses on reduction of nutrients in individual water bodies. Innovative drainage filter technologies currently being tested in Denmark could facilitate nutrient reductions at the sub-river basins and catchment levels. The implementation strategy for these technologies, however, remains a challenge. Using both primary and secondary data, this paper presents an in-depth analysis of the role of these technologies in implementation of the WFD in Denmark. Concepts of impact assessment are used to identify the most suitable approach for incorporating these technologies into environmental measures based on a three-faceted policy instrument typology. A voluntary approach supported by investment subsidies, or incentives that could replace existing requirements, is deemed more appropriate.

AbstractBackgroundTo understand how a metazoan cell makes the decision to differentiate, we assessed the role of stochastic gene expression (SGE) during the erythroid differentiation process. Our hypothesis is that stochastic gene expression has a role in single-cell decision-making. In agreement with this hypothesis, we and others recently showed that SGE significantly increased during differentiation. However, evidence for the causative role of SGE is still lacking. Such demonstration would require being able to experimentally manipulate SGE levels and analyze the resulting impact of these variations on cell differentiation.ResultWe identified three drugs that modulate SGE in primary erythroid progenitor cells. Artemisinin and Indomethacin simultaneously decreased SGE and reduced the amount of differentiated cells. Inversely, α-methylene-γ-butyrolactone-3 (MB-3) simultaneously increased the level of SGE and the amount of differentiated cells. We then used a dynamical modelling approach which confirmed that differentiation rates were indeed affected by the drug treatment.ConclusionUsing single-cell analysis and modeling tools, we provide experimental evidence that in a physiologically relevant cellular system, control of SGE can directly modify differentiation, supporting a causal link between the two.

Purpose This paper aims to highlight the need to better understand the determinants of adopting (more) collaborative, integrated approaches in strategic destination management plans and operational business procedures which is to improve destination and business resilience towards the growing frequency, increasing number and accelerating impacts of natural disasters around the world. Design/methodology/approach The paper reviews literature on the topic of tourism planning, development and management in light of natural disasters. Findings The paper pinpoints a number of factors that hamper the adoption of a (better) integrated and (more) collaborative framework of disaster and destination management among tourism stakeholders. It further proposes how these factors can at least partially be addressed and highlights the role of scholarly research in this endeavour. Originality/value The paper highlights the determinants of adopting more integrated and collaborative approaches to managing natural disasters by individual tourism businesses and entire tourist destinations and proposes how these can be harnessed.

This research deals with A Role of CSR Programs in Reducing Corporate Social Conflict in Mining Industry (A Study in PT. RAYA, Sumatera Utara). This research was conducted on qualitative approach. The data is obtained by literary studies, interviews and observation. Analysis started with describing motivations and conditions of CSR of PT. RAYA since the beginning until the conflicts appeared. Then, the research was trying to look for the CSR implementation strategy, especially as extractive company which undergo conflict with local people and the obstacles that were found by the company as long as they were implementing their CSR, as an interest conflict belong to miners without  permissions, negative stigma from the people also intervention and provocation   gotten by program receivers.

A qualified madrasah is strongly influenced by the leader’s role of the Madrasah per se because managerial abilities are a significant factor in determining the success of education. One of which is by making educational innovations at the Madrasah (school) that he leads. The head of a Madrasah that has seriousness and high working performance will be capable of making good innovations. Besides, such innovations should also be espoused by reliable managerial abilities in order to capably realize an effective, conducive, and dynamic Madrasah. This study sought to find out a depiction of the managerial innovations made by the principal of MIS of Lebong Tambang in Lebong Regency, Bengkulu, in an effort to maintain the existence of Madrasah he leads. This study used a qualitative approach. The data collection techniques deployed observation, interview, and documentation techniques, and then the data were analyzed in ways according to Miles, Haberman and Saldana. This study concluded that the principal together with all teachers strived to make innovations through: preparation of school planning; development of school organization; effective involvement of teachers and staffs at school; management of facilities and infrastructure; student management; curriculum development; and management of school financial and administration.
