It is a current concern in the wood preservation field to avoid the use of toxic chemicals and develop new technologies based on low environmental impact agents and sustainable principles. Under this expectation, an intended state-of-the-art is introduced on the application of natural products such as traditional tar and wood oils as well as tannins and plant extracts. A particular revision to heartwood chemical components is offered. The combined methods of using natural and chemical components are reviewed, considering as outstanding the mixtures of natural organic constituents with cooper and boron salts that seem to be under encouraging experimentation. Fungicides and anti-termite applications are commented as well the leaching problem of inorganic salts. Chemical modification of wood structure through the formation of adducts and the treatment with nanomaterials are promising tools that will change the actual view and performance of wood preservation techniques.Preservación de la madera usando productos naturalesUna de las prioridades actuales en el campo de la preservación de madera es evitar el uso de materiales tóxicos, desarrollando nuevas tecnologías fundamentadas en principios sustentables y empleando agentes de bajo impacto ambiental. Con esta expectativa se plantea una revisión del estado del arte sobre la aplicación de productos naturales, tales como taninos, alquitrán, aceites y extractos vegetales. Se presenta en particular una revisión sobre los componentes químicos contenidos en el duramen de maderas naturalmente resistentes. Se analizan los métodos combinados de ingredientes naturales y químicos, resaltando las mezclas de componentes naturales orgánicos con sales de cobre y boro que parecen representar una opción experimental confiable. Se comentan también las aplicaciones fungicidas y anti termitas, así como los problemas de lixiviación de sales inorgánicas. Opciones como la modificación química de la madera vía la formación de aductos y por tratamiento con nanomateriales son procesos promisorios que cambiaran eventualmente la manera de ver y aplicar la tecnología actual de preservación de maderas.

This article provides a methodological proposal oriented to optimize theassessment process of a student performance on an on line environment through the application of group communication techniques (advisor-student, student-advisor, studentstudent, student-chat and so on) and widespread use of the new technologies on information and telecommunication as basic tools, based one the process follow-up and statistical data collection from the student´s learning performance and behaviour to enable the construction of significant and reliable indexes thus allowing the advisor a diagnostic on the student´sattitude and performance, allowing him to take on time the adequate preventive/corrective decision measures based on a success/failure tests outputs from the student performance, on a day- to- day basis, on the line environment.Palabras claves: Aprovechamiento del alumno, entorno en línea, información tecnológica nueva, procesos de estimaciónResumen. Este artículo ofrece una propuesta metodológica enfocada a optimizar el proceso de evaluación sobre el aprovechamiento del alumno en un entorno en línea mediante técnicas de comunicación grupal (tutor- alumno, alumno-tutor, alumno-alumno, alumno-chat, programa, etc.) y el uso profuso de las nuevas tecnologías de información y telecomunicación como herramientas básicas, mediante un seguimiento y registro estadístico del aprovechamiento y actitudinal del estudiante, posibilitando así la construcción de índicessignificativos, seguros y confiables, que permitan al instructor/facilitador disponer de un diagnóstico sobre el comportamiento y actitud del aplicar y aplicar en consecuencia las medidas preventivas/correctivas sobre la conducta continuamente observada del alumno en el entorno en línea.

El objetivo de la presente propuesta es identificar las características esenciales que debe considerarse al momento de escoger o formar personas en docencia para el presente siglo XXI. Siendo sus objetivos específicos: comprender los modelos educativos, conceptuar nuevos escenarios de enseñanza- aprendizaje, identificar tecnologías emergentes en la era digital, proponer nuevos perfiles del modelo docente para el siglo XXI, promover el respeto por las diferencias culturales en el marco de la educación interculturalidad y promoción del desarrollo del pensamiento crítico, propositivo y constructivo. Para este diagnóstico, en relación a los escenarios educativos y la presencia de las nuevas tecnologías, se revisa el estado del arte en relación a la realidad educativa en general. Como resultado del análisis de la bibliografía estudiada, se tiene un acercamiento hacia una propuesta sobre el perfil de un docente del siglo XXI. Se propone seis ejes para definir al docente del siglo XXI. Por otro lado, es necesario poner en práctica el desarrollo del pensamiento crítico, constructivo y propositivo; el mismo que a partir de un acto de conciencia de su propia realidad, permitirá al estudiante, formular propuestas coherentes con la construcción de una nueva sociedad en la que su rol protagónico, se hace perceptible, desde los distintos estadios de su desarrollo.     The objective of this proposal is to identify the essential characteristics that must be considered when choosing or training people in teaching for the present 21st century. Being its specific objectives: understanding educational models, conceptualizing new teaching-learning scenarios, identifying emerging technologies in the digital age, proposing new profiles of the teaching model for the 21st century, promoting respect for cultural differences in the framework of education interculturality and promotion of the development of critical, purposeful and constructive thinking. For this diagnosis, in relation to educational settings and the presence of new technologies, the state of the art is reviewed in relation to educational reality in general. As a result of the analysis of the bibliography studied, there is an approach towards a proposal on the profile of a teacher of the XXI century. Six axes are proposed to define the teacher of the XXI century. On the other hand, it is necessary to put into practice the development of critical, constructive and purposeful thinking; the same one that from an act of awareness of their own reality, will allow the student to formulate proposals consistent with the construction of a new society in which their leading role becomes perceptible, from the different stages of their development.

La enseñanza de la matemática a lo largo de los años ha sido objeto de estudio y de referencia para conocer y evaluar distintas teorías y métodos de instrucción en beneficio de los estudiantes y su relación con esta asignatura. La investigación desarrollada presenta los resultados de un estudio realizado a los distintos actores de la educación en el Instituto Educacional Juan XXIII, ubicado en la ciudad de Valencia. Se realizó una encuesta a estudiantes del séptimo grado de educación básica de la institución, sus representantes, profesores de la cátedra de matemática y los directivos del mismo instituto para conocer su visión de la materia matemática así como su posible alcance en el desarrollo de habilidades lógico-matemáticas a partir del uso de nuevas tecnologías, para construir una comunidad virtual que estimule el aprendizaje colaborativo. Se obtuvieron resultados importantes, los cuales permitieron desarrollar una propuesta a la institución que incluyó seguir sus lineamientos en estándar educativo como lo es el del programa de los años intermedios (PAI), así como también desarrollar los conceptos y metodologías instruccionales del Diseño hacia Atrás y la Enseñanza para la Comprensión. Esta propuesta tuvo como plataforma guía a Moodle, la cual se propone sea incorporada como tecnología de punta para el desarrollo de estrategias de aula en apoyo al docente en sus actividades matemáticas diarias, a fin de lograr alcanzar la comprensión y habilidad matemática en el alumnado.AbstractMathematics education throughout the years has been object of study and reference to know and to evaluate different theories and methods of instruction in benefit of the students and its relation with this subject. The developed investigation presents the results of a study made to the different actors in education at the Educational Institute Juan XXIII, located in the city of Valencia, Venezuela. Seventh grade students, their parents, professors of the mathematical chair and the directors of the same institute, were surveyed to know their vision of math courses as well as its possible influence in the development of logical-mathematics abilities with the help of new technologies, to construct a virtual community that stimulates the collaborative learning. Important results were obtained, which allowed to develop a proposal to the institution following its guidelines in educative standard like the interval years program (PAI), and as well to develop the concepts and instructions methodologies of the Backwards Design and the Education for Understanding. This proposal has Moodle as platform, which is intended to be incorporated as state of the art technology for the development of classroom strategies to support teachers in their daily activities, in order to reach the understanding and mathematical ability in the pupils.

In preparation for the next generation combined cycles, gas turbine technology development needs to continue to lower the lifecycle costs through increased efficiency, reduced first costs, extended maintenance cycles, and reduced emissions. It must also develop fast ramping capability, account for a wider variation in fuel composition and provide emission and performance effective part load operation. These needs will be met by refining state of the art technologies and adding new technologies. This paper will provide an overview of the recent research and development activities, the approach to bring them into a product and the resulting trend in Alstom gas turbine technologies.

This paper provides a stocktake of the status of hill country farming in New Zealand and addresses the challenges which will determine its future state and performance. It arises out of the Hill Country Symposium, held in Rotorua, New Zealand, 12-13 April 2016. This paper surveys people, policy, business and change, farming systems for hill country, soil nutrients and the environment, plants for hill country, animals, animal feeding and productivity, and strategies for achieving sustainable outcomes in the hill country. This paper concludes by identifying approaches to: support current and future hill country farmers and service providers, to effectively and efficiently deal with change; link hill farming businesses to effective value chains and new markets to achieve sufficient and stable profitability; reward farmers for the careful management of natural resources on their farm; ensure that new technologies which improve the efficient use of input resources are developed; and strategies to achieve vibrant rural communities which strengthen hill country farming businesses and their service providers. Background: Breast cancer is considered as the most perilous sickness among females worldwide and the ratio of new cases is expanding yearly. Many researchers have proposed efficient algorithms to diagnose breast cancer at early stages, which have increased the efficiency and performance by utilizing the learned features of gold standard histopathological images. Objective: Most of these systems have either used traditional handcrafted features or deep features which had a lot of noise and redundancy, which ultimately decrease the performance of the system. Methods: A hybrid approach is proposed by fusing and optimizing the properties of handcrafted and deep features to classify the breast cancer images. HOG and LBP features are serially fused with pretrained models VGG19 and InceptionV3. PCR and ICR are used to evaluate the classification performance of proposed method. Results: The method concentrates on histopathological images to classify the breast cancer. The performance is compared with state-of-the-art techniques, where an overall patient-level accuracy of 97.2% and image-level accuracy of 96.7% is recorded. Conclusion: The proposed hybrid method achieves the best performance as compared to previous methods and it can be used for the intelligent healthcare systems and early breast cancer detection.

NoSQL-based databases are attractive to store and manage big data mainly due to high scalability and data modeling flexibility. However, security in NoSQL-based databases is weak which raises concerns for users. Specifically, security of data at rest is a high concern for the users deployed their NoSQL-based solutions on the cloud because unauthorized access to the servers will expose the data easily. There have been some efforts to enable encryption for data at rest for NoSQL databases. However, existing solutions do not support secure query processing, and data communication over the Internet and performance of the proposed solutions are also not good. In this article, the authors address NoSQL data at rest security concern by introducing a system which is capable to dynamically encrypt/decrypt data, support secure query processing, and seamlessly integrate with any NoSQL- based database. The proposed solution is based on a combination of chaotic encryption and Order Preserving Encryption (OPE). The experimental evaluation showed excellent results when integrated the solution with MongoDB and compared with the state-of-the-art existing work.
