Determinants of Smoking Behavior among Nurses

This article explores the determinants of smoking behavior among nurses and reviews the research documenting the history and current trends of cigarette use among nurses. National and international studies of cigarette use among nurses show them to smoke more than any other group of health professionals. Stress has been the primary theory of smoking causation among nurses. While some studies suggest this, there are also studies demonstrating no significant differences of stress among smoking and nonsmoking nurses. The literature offers other determinants, including socialization processes, the pharmacological action of nicotine, normative influences, the medical environment, and the feminist movement. A surprising late addition to this list is that nursing education itself may play a major role in the smoking behavior of student and graduate nurses. The failure of nursing education to emphasize health behaviors as well as the use of the medical model in nursing curriculum is suggested as an explanation for the findings that nurses are likely to perceive themselves more as the providers of care and help to the ill than as health models and educators. A summary of conclusions from studies of cigarette use among nurses is that student nurses should receive a specific learning experience which would focus on the role of health educator and exemplar in the nurse's role of preventing smoking-related illnesses. Conclusions from the literature also repeat the recommendation that educational strategies for nurses should contrast the use of cigarettes with the concept that nurses assume a role of health advocacy in promoting wellness.

AbstractNursing education has increasingly turned to international learning experiences to educate students who are globally minded and aware of social injustices in local and global communities. To date, research with international learning experiences has focused on the benefits for the students participating, after they have completed the international experience. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how nursing students learn during the international experience. The sample consisted of eight nursing students who enrolled in an international learning experience, and data were collected in “real time” in Zambia. The students were observed during learning activities and were interviewed three times. Three major themes emerged from the thematic analysis: expectations shaped students’ learning, engagement facilitated learning, and critical reflection enhanced learning. Implications are discussed, related to disrupting media representations of Africa that shape students’ expectations, and educational strategies for transformative learning and global citizenship.

Educational strategies are designed to cope with and fulfill the multifarious pedagogical and educational needs of teachers and learners. Moreover, no educational plan can possibly yield the required results without incorporating suitable instructive strategies. This research paper advocates the role and importance of schemas in learning new forms of knowledge and data in the perspective of class room teaching-learning. Cognitive approach is adopted to understand how students learn new forms of knowledge and experiences through different mental processes, quite unlike that of behaviorism. The concept of schema helps us understand how learners can link new pieces of information to the already existing knowledge in their minds. The notion of ‘Constructivist Approach’ has been extracted from the field of educational psychology for triangulation. Extracts are taken from the textbooks of English used in matriculation and intermediate through purposive sampling. Their analysis shows that schemas can play a vital role in enhancing the learning experience and making new forms of knowledge a permanent part of the memory of students which is the ultimate goal of education.

This chapter proposes a pedagogical framework for deaf education that builds on a sociocultural perspective and the role of interaction in learning. Pedagogical principles are argued that recognize the dialogic nature of learning and teaching and the role of language as “the tool of all tools” in this process. Building on established work on classroom talk in deaf education, the issues of dialogue in deaf education are extended to consider deaf children’s current learning contexts and their diverse and plural use of sign and spoken languages. Within this broad language context, the languaging and translanguaging practices of learners and teachers are explained as central to a pedagogical framework that is responsive to the diverse learning needs of deaf children. Within this pedagogical framework practical teaching strategies are suggested that draw on successful approaches in the wider field of language learning and take into account the particular learning experience and contexts of deaf children.

Evidence suggests that as immigrants’ length of residence in the host country increases, they may integrate their behavior and norms to align with the new community’s cultural norms. The current study examined e-cigarette use among immigrants in the U.S., and whether the length of residence in the U.S. is associated with e-cigarette use among immigrants compared to the native-born population. Data were drawn from the 2014/15 and 2018/19 Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey. Multivariable logistic regression was used to compare differences in e-cigarette use between native-born populations and immigrants, when immigrants’ length of residence in the U.S. was considered. Among immigrants, the prevalence of ever and current e-cigarette use increased significantly from 2.5% and 0.5% in 2014/2015 to 3.2% and 0.8% in 2018/2019, respectively. Multivariable analysis showed that immigrants had significantly lower odds of ever e-cigarette use compared to the mainland-born citizen (0–5 years in the U.S., adjusted Odds Ratio (aOR) 0.57, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) 0.46–0.69; 6–10 years, aOR 0.51, 95% CI 0.41–0.63; 11–20 years, aOR 0.45, 95% CI 0.39–0.53; 20+years, aOR 0.68, 95% CI 0.62–0.76). Similar results were found for current e-cigarette use, with immigrants being less likely to be current users. Findings that e-cigarette use among all immigrants—regardless of years living in the U.S.—was consistently lower than among the native-born population run contrary to the notion that as length of stay increases, health behaviors between immigrants and native populations of the host country become similar.

The supervision of clinical placements is essential to achieving a positive learning experience in the clinical setting and which supports the professional training of those being supervised. The aim of this study was to explore health sciences students’ perceptions of the role of the supervisor in the supervision of clinical placements. A quantitative methodology was used, administering a previously validated questionnaire, by means of an expert panel and a pre-test, to 134 students from the Faculty of Nursing, Physiotherapy and Podiatry at the University of Seville (Spain). The analysis of variables was carried out by means of a data matrix. The results revealed a statistically significant difference in the perception of placement supervision depending on the degree, with Nursing producing the highest degree of affirmation in the variables studied and the greatest satisfaction with placement supervision; in contrast, Physiotherapy produced the greatest dissatisfaction and the lowest degree of affirmation. The study and analysis of these perceptions facilitates the collection of relevant information in order to formulate actions that help to improve the supervision experience during placements. They also allow a greater understanding of what factors most influence the experience of supervision during clinical placements.

Electronic, or “e”-cigarette use has been adopted by an alarming number of teens in recent years. E-cigarettes are neither legal for youth nor considered safe for use by youth. E-cigarette companies have targeted youth in their marketing strategies and developed appealing flavors with high nicotine content to ensure dependence on their products. Schools lack adequate resources and capacity to address e-cigarette use, relying mostly on punitive sanctions for what is essentially a health issue. School nurses can help their districts and schools by navigating appropriate consequences for vaping, providing accurate information and education, providing cessation resources, advocating for student support, and informing stakeholders on population health strategies to prevent initiation and reduce youth e-cigarette use.
