It has been successfully developed a prototype mobile robot, controlled remotely, based on web via wireless TCP/IP network. This prototype mobile robot adopts tank's movement, equipped with a surveillance camera to acquire real time data on surrounding environment, a webcam is used by user. Since it is controlled remotely from a web based application on host computer via wireless TCP/IP network, it could do some telemetry in such environment, which harmful for human. It uses a wireless device for birectional communication, to transmit and receive data. While on debugging, wireless communication are took place directly without any obstacle (line of sight), between host computer and prototype mobile robot.

Abstract In this paper, we developed a new navigation system, called ATCM, which detects obstacles in a sliding window with an adaptive threshold clustering algorithm, classifies the detected obstacles with a decision tree, heuristically predicts potential collision and finds optimal path with a simplified Morphin algorithm. This system has the merits of optimal free-collision path, small memory size and less computing complexity, compared with the state of the arts in robot navigation. The modular design of 6-steps navigation provides a holistic methodology to implement and verify the performance of a robot’s navigation system. The experiments on simulation and a physical robot for the eight scenarios demonstrate that the robot can effectively and efficiently avoid potential collisions with any static or dynamic obstacles in its surrounding environment. Compared with the particle swarm optimisation, the dynamic window approach and the traditional Morphin algorithm for the autonomous navigation of a mobile robot in a static environment, ATCM achieved the shortest path with higher efficiency.

The reasons influencing the VoIP QoS include transmission delay, jitter and data packet drop. The main measures improving the VoIP QoS are the integrated services and the differentiated services. But the integrated service is only suitable for the small-scale network, and the differentiated services can’t guarantee QoS from the source end to the destination end for every IP data stream alone. The paper sets forth a kind of mixed model combining integrated Services with differentiated Services to support the VoIP QoS on the bases analysis of their defects.

Abstract This paper describes the application of multimedia and virtual reality technology to a multiple wheeled mobile robot system. The system is designed for teleoperation of a variety of highway maintenance and construction tasks, such as automated highway pavement crack sealing. Each robot is tethered to a support truck through linkages, and has its own embedded controller for motion control and posture sensing. A host computer is dedicated to communicate with the robots and to provide a multimedia interface to the operator. A video camera is mounted above the robots’ workspace and live video is taken to the host computer’s video capture card which supports video overlay. The live video of the robot workspace is then overlaid on the robots’ control window and provides an augmented reality for crack detection, path planning, and robot monitoring. By mapping live video on the computer generated interactive robot animation, the operator can simply control any robot through finger motion on a touch screen. The host computer can also provide a virtual environment providing the operator with a sense that he is sitting on the robot, allowing the robot to be easily controlled with a joystick. This paper shows the manner in which fast growing and inexpensive multimedia PC technology, virtual reality concepts, and the newest programming tools like Visual C++ 4.0 and OpenGL 1.1 for Windows 95/NT can be used to build an integrated interactive monitoring and control interface allowing ease in teleoperation of a multiple robot system thus significantly improving operational performance.

PurposeThe purpose of the paper is to discuss the scope for improving the delivery of FM services through the use of wireless web‐based communications infrastructure, delivered via an application service provider (ASP) business model. This paper discusses the findings from case studies of three organisations and their approach to the management of facilities.Design/methodology/approachAn investigation was undertaken to ascertain the current state of play in terms of managing and tracking processes within the facilities management department of three different organisations. These case studies were chosen from distinct sectors, namely health care, higher education, and banking. Emphasis is placed on analysing how the organisations currently operate with their existing FM systems and the degree of influence technology has on existing processes. This was considered mainly in terms of computer‐aided facilities management (CAFM) and computer‐integrated facilities management (CIFM).FindingsThe study found that a new wireless web‐based service for FM systems would be considered useful. Although notoriously slow adopters of new technology, there was an acceptance by the facilities managers interviewed that a wireless web‐based approach would improve current practice, especially with respect to real‐time job reporting and tracking and in the determination of FM operative working time utilisation.Practical implicationsFurther work by the author is focusing on the development of a suitable demonstrator to illustrate the key concepts of a wireless web‐based FM service which will then be tested and evaluated. Buildings are responsible for a major amount of the annual energy consumption. A detailed recording and evaluation of building data could provide a deeper understanding of building operation schemes and the corresponding performance. This could help building owners and operators to evaluate and better understand the actual situation. Based on this (real-time) data an optimized operation scheme can be designed and implemented for future time steps. Additionally, a more detailed understanding of the impact of previous building systems interactions will be possible. The building automation industry and the related service provider sector are actually providing proprietary solutions for data logging, visualization and energy optimization. Such solutions are regularly integrated into their own specific software of the used proprietary building management solutions. As an alternative, we suggest an Internet of Things (IoT) and web services inspired concept for the implementation of a generic web service for building diagnostics. Our suggestion encompasses a holistic performance evaluation that considers both the energy consumptions and delivered building service. In this contribution, a general design of a web service based solution is presented and the future possibilities for data access from various sources are discussed. Furthermore, details of actually developed and demonstratively implemented software components for data preprocessing are presented. Data processing examples for different types of data are included and highlight the potential of such web-based approaches. Moreover, possibilities for improved building control by the use of web services for operation schedule generation or model predictive control are illustrated and critically debated.

When considering the addition of a mobile presentation channel to an existing web-based application, a key question that has to be answered even before development begins is how the mobile channel's characteristics will impact the user experience and the cost of using the application. If either of these factors is outside acceptable limits, economical considerations may forbid adding the channels, even if it would be feasible from a purely technical perspective. Both of these factors depend considerably on two metrics: The time required to transmit data over the mobile network, and the volume transmitted. The PETTICOAT method presented in this paper uses the dialog flow model and web server log files of an existing application to identify typical interaction sequences and to compile volume statistics, which are then run through a tool that simulates the volume and time that would be incurred by executing the interaction sequences on a mobile channel. From the simulated volume and time data, we can then calculate the cost of accessing the application on a mobile channel, and derive suitable approaches for optimizing cost and response times.
