Objective: Four different extracts of Araucaria columnaris (bark peel) and Cosmos sulphureus (flowers) were screened for their phytochemical composition, and free radical scavenging activities.Methods: DPPH method was used to test the antioxidant activity for extracts.Results: Among the different extracts tested, the methanol extract of both the plant species showed significant radical scavenging activities. Phytochemical analysis of the extracts revealed that the radical scavenging activities might be due to the presence of flavonoids, tannins and phenolic compounds.Conclusion: The results obtained suggest that Araucaria columnaris (bark peel) and Cosmos sulphureus(flowers) could be exploited in the treatment of various diseases like cancer, cardiovascular diseases and infection diseases.

In the present investigation, the synthesis of few novel leads bearing 2-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-4–(substitutedphenyl)-1H-1,5–benzodiazepine pharmacophore is described. The substituted chalcone and their derivatives 3(a-j) were synthesized by base catalyzed Claisen-Schmidt condensation between p-hydroxy-acetophenone and appropriate aldehydes. The dibromostyryl ketones 4(a-j) were obtained by the reaction the chalcone with bromine in acetic acid. The dibromostyryl ketone were reacted with methanol in presence of sodium methoxide followed by acidic hydrolysis give 1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3-(substitutedphenyl)-1,3-propanediones. The targeted compounds; the substituted 1,5-benzodiazepines were synthesized with o-phenylenediamine and synthesized 1,3-propanediones. The structures of synthesized compounds were confirmed by spectroscopic and analytical techniques (IR, 1H-NMR, and MS). The free radical scavenging activity of the synthesized analogs was monitored by in vitro antioxidant activity protocol. The derivatives 6f, 6g, 6i, and 6j were found to exhibit good antioxidant activity with 59.07%, 41.33%, 68.3% and 60.4% scavenging activity respectively as compared to standard ascorbic acid which demonstrated 79.73% activity. The current research revealed the potential of 2-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-4–(substituted-phenyl)-1H-1,5–benzodiazepine as emerging free radical scavengers. The study helped to establish a structure-activity relationship (SAR) where the substitution on the phenyl moiety of the 1,5-benzodiazepine was found to play profound role and influence over biological activity. The research will open new avenues for the development of antioxidant moieties having perspectives in cancer, inflammation, and several other ailments.

Objective: Study of antioxidant activity of a crude aqueous-methanol extract of Aristolochia tagala and its fractions and identification of the compounds with antioxidant activity.Methods: The antioxidant activity was assayed by the ability to scavenge free radicals such as superoxide, nitric oxide and ABTS radical cation and the identification of compounds was carried out by LC/MS analysis.Results: Fraction I of Aristolochia tagala showed the highest free radical scavenging activity and compounds responsible for its activity were identified as magnoflorine, apigenin dimethyl ether, aristolone, and N-trans-feruloyldopamine.Conclusion: The free radical scavenging property of the compounds present in Aristolochia tagala may be one mechanism that contributed to medicinal property exhibited by this plant.

Many plants are used empirically as antioxidant. Plants that are frequently used in Indonesian communities are Zingiber officinale and Piper retrofractum. The aim of this research was to investigate the in vitro antioxidant activity of single ethanolic extract and the combinations ofZ. officinale and P. retrofratum using free radical scavenging DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) method. Z. officinale and P. retrofratum were extracted by maceration using 95% ethanol for 3 x 24 hours. Antioxidant activity was evaluated using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method. The concentration of the extract (μg/mL) that was required to scavenge 50% of free radicals (IC50)was calculatedusing the percent scavenging activities of six different extract concentrations. The results showed that the single ethanolic extract of Z. Officinalle produced the highest antioxidant activity with IC50of 56 μg/mL, while the antioxidant  activity of the single ethanolic extract of  P. retrofractum produced an IC50 of 3.445 μg/mL. The IC50 of combination of Z. officinale and P. retrofratum ethanolic extracts at concentration ratios of 1: 2, 1 : 1, and 2 : 1 were 148 μg/mL, 85 μg/mL, and 73 μg/mL.Keywords: Zingiber officinale, Piper retrfratum, Antioxidant, DPPH

Bergenia ciliata is an essential medicinal plant used in regions where western medicines are inaccessible due to their unavailability and high cost. The methanolic extract of Bergenia ciliataroots was separated for phytochemical elements and in-vitro antioxidant activity. The plant extract showed the rich outgrowth of secondary metabolites that play the role for biological activities. The higher antioxidant functioning of the plant is due to the occurrence of reactive elements like phenols and flavonoids. The antioxidant functioning of the plant extract was measured by DPPH free radical scavenging assay. In DPPH free radical scavenging assay the IC50 value of Bergenia ciliata was found to be 11.21μg/mL, while the IC50 value of standard ascorbic acid was found to be 45.93μg/mL

In present study, free radical scavenging activity of methanolic extract of all parts (leaves, seeds, root, stem and flower) of Perilla frutescens L. has been estimated. The promising results, among the five plant parts leaves, seeds, root, stem, flower and the standard tested for the in vitro antioxidant activity using the DPPH method, the crude methanolic extracts of all parts showed antioxidant activity, with IC50 values of 5.95 ± 0.10, 8.28 ± 0.20, 66.27 ± 0.17, 80.03 ± 0.10 and 122.35 ± 0.17 μg/mL, respectively. The IC50 value for ascorbic acid was 5.19 ± 0.26 μg/mL. While butylated hydroxyl toluene (BHT) a synthetic commercial antioxidant has comparatively high IC50 value of 108.46 ± 0.57 μg/mL. Presence of zinc in all parts of plant in the range 17.20 ± 0.22 to 33.56 ± 0.32 ppm further supports the strong antioxidant activity of Perilla frutescens L. The phytochemical tests indicated that all parts of Perilla frutescens L. have considerable proportion of important phytochemicals and are in rich source of secondary metabolites like polyphenols, tannins, alkaloids and flavonoids. Several of such compounds are known to possess potent antioxidant activity.

Aim: The study was designed to investigate antioxidant, survivability,  fecundity, and locomotor activity of Moringa oleifera leaf (MOL) extract in Drosophila melanogaster. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted at the Africa Centre of Excellence in phytomedicine Research and Development (ACEPRD), University of Jos, Nigeria, in August 2019 - March 2020. In the first place, in vitro analysis of the antioxidant activity of extracts of M. oleifera in various solvents (Aqueous, Methanol-Aqueous co-solvent (80 % v/v) and n-Hexane) were evaluated using DPPH (1,1-Diphenyl-2-Picrylhydrazyl) assay. Based on the in vitro result, the methanol extract with the best free radical scavenging activity was used in graded doses for conducting the in vivo studies, and the observations were recorded. Distilled water (1000 µL) was used alone in 10 g fly food (as negative control) or as a solvent to dissolve MOL extract or ascorbic acid (positive control) separately before mixing with the fly food.  Statistical significance was taken at P<0.05 Results: The methanol extract of M. oleifera leaf (MEMOL) showed significantly (P<0.05) higher free radical scavenging ability (IC50 = 60 µg/ml) compared with the aqueous (IC50 = 100 µg/ml) and n-hexane (IC50 = 250 µg/ml) extracts respectively. The median lethal dose (LD50) of MEMOL was >2000 mg. Supplementation with MEMOL non-significantly (P>0.05) improved movement, significantly (P<0.05) increased survivability, fecundity, and total thiol level. The activities of glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and catalase (CAT) significantly (P<0.05) increased. The superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity non-significantly (P>0.05) decreased, while malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration decreased significantly (P<0.05) compared with controls, respectively. Conclusion:  In vitro study suggested better antioxidant activity of MEMOL. In vivo study also revealed that MEMOL was relatively safe in D. melanogaster, supported by high LD50, increased survivability, fecundity, locomotor ability, antioxidant enzyme activities, total thiol level, along with a concomitant decrease in MDA content.

Objective: This study was designed to determine the Total phenol, flavonoid content, antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties of different solvent extracts of Piper umbellatum.  Methods: Different solvent extracts evaluated with DPPH radical scavenging activity and Reducing power activity.Results: The presence of phenol and flavonoid showed highly in the methanol extracts than ethyl acetate and acetone extracts. All the extracts have various level of antioxidant activity. Methanol solvent extract have good extraction and show significant antioxidant activity. The effect of reducing power of methanol extract revealed good antioxidant activity compare with other tested extracts.Conclusion: On the basis of the above results we concluded that methanol extract of Piper umbellatum whole plant extracts shows significant antioxidant activity than ethyl acetate and acetone extracts.Keywords: Piper umbellatum, Antioxidant, DPPH, FRAP assay, Polar, Non polar solvents

<p><em>Centella asiatica</em> also known as <em>mandukparni </em>or Indian pennywort or <em>jalbrahmi</em>, which has been used as a medicine in the Ayurveda from ancient times and mentioned in many classical texts of Ayurveda. <em>Centella asiatica</em> has long been used to improve memory and cognitive function.</p><p>The study aimed to identify the phytochemicals present in different solvent extracts of <em>Centella asiatica </em>(i.e. PECA- Petroleum ether extract of <em>C. asiatica, </em>CCA- Chloroform extract of <em>C. asiatica, </em>EACA- Ethyl acetate extract of <em>C. asiatica,</em> ECA- Ethanolic extract of <em>C. asiatica, </em>HACA- Hydro-alcoholic extract of <em>C. asiatica</em>)<em> </em>and evaluate the respective in-vitro antioxidant potentials. <em></em></p><p>The phytochemical screening of extracts was done with standardized procedures and the antioxidant potential of different solvent extracts of <em>Centella asiatica</em> was assessed by its free radical scavenging activity 2, 2-diphenyl -1- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) as well as hydrogen peroxide scavenging assay respectively for reducing capability.</p><p>In all different solvent extracts of <em>C. asiatica</em> revealed excellent free radical scavenging activity as revealed by 2-2- diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) assay with  EC<sub>50</sub> values for ECA=128.752±1.85 μg/ml, HACA=274.884±1.21 μg/ml and hydrogen peroxide assay against the standard (Butylated hydroxytoluene) BHT, with the EC<sub>50</sub> values ECA=429.69±0.92 μg/ml HACA=458.08±0.58 μg/ml while rest solvent extracts shown very less antioxidant activity.</p><p> The present study indicates that the <em>Centella asiatica</em> extracts have good antioxidant activity which can be used in stress and anxiety and also a good source to be used as natural drugs.</p>
