Parmotrema austrosinense(Zahlbr.) Hale is one of the lichens used as spices and also it has medicinal property. The goal of this investigation was to assess the antioxidant, reducing power, free radical scavenging and antiphyto pathogenic effect of P. austrosinense. Lichen sample was extracted with different solvents - benzene, methanol, chloroform and acetone. The benzene extract showed a strong antioxidant activity (5.665±0.0065) followed by chloroform extract (3.648±0.0029), acetone extract (2.770±0.0078) and methanol extract (2.430± 0.0046). The methanolic extract of lichen showed the highest reducing power followed by the acetone and nonpolar solvents like chloroform and benzene. Among the four solvents chosen, methanol extract of lichen showed the highest free radical scavenging activity followed by acetone, chloroform and benzene. The antimicrobial activity non-polar solvents like chloroform and benzene extract showed highest antimicrobial activity against three tested fungi (Fusarium oxysporum, Rhizoctonia solani, Sclerotium rolfsii) and bacterial plant pathogens(Bacillus sp.,Xanthomonas phaseoli and Erwinia chrysanthemi)followed by methanol and acetone extracts and streptomycin was used as a control antibiotic.

Yinchenhao (Artemisia capillaris Thunb.) is a pharmaceutical agent that not only shows therapeutic effects against hepatobiliary diseases but also offers various physiological benefits. This study examined the extraction rates of antioxidant extracts from Yinchenhao leaves using different solvents. The extraction rates using different solvents were as follows: ethanol (12.1 ± 0.87%) > water (7.7 ± 0.45%) > n-butanol (1.3 ± 0.16%) ethyl acetate > (1.3 ± 0.14%) > n-hexane (1.1 ± 0.15%). The n-butanol and ethyl acetate extracts showed higher 1,1-Diphenyl-2 picrylhydrazyl radical free radical scavenging activity, 2,2′-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonate) free radical scavenging activity and ferric ion reducing antioxidant activity, while n-hexane extracts showed weak antioxidant activity. In conclusion, Yinchenhao leaf has potential as a natural antioxidant, and n-butanol and ethyl acetate may be effective extraction solvents for studying its antioxidant activities.

The scum of mixed juice is a by-product in sugarcane factory, which used up-floating method for mixed juice clarification. The scum is of great research and utilization value due to its rich organic non-sugar compounds such as proteins, lipids and polyphenols. Studies on the free radical scavenging capacity and reducing power of water extraction sample (A) and macroporous resin purified sample (B) from mixed juice scum were investigated, comparing with Vc. It was showed that the antioxidant activity of macroporous resin purified sample (B) was much stronger than that of water extraction sample (A) and Vc in , and system. For example, the scavenging capacity of sample B on was 11 times than that of Vc and 1450 times of sample A. In addition, the free radical scavenging activity of sample A and B was dependent on the sample concentration. Results in this study indicated that scum of mixed juice may be a promising natural antioxidant, which can be used as additives in food industry or feed industry.

This study was carried out to investigate the antioxidant activity in terms of free radical scavenging capacity and membrane stabilizing ability of methanol extract of bark of Sonneratia apetala. The total phenol content of the extract was measured by Folin-Ciocalteu reagent. The antioxidant potential was investigated using 2,2 diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH), reducing power assay and chelating power determination. The membrane stabilizing capacity was assessed by monitoring the hypotonic solution - and heat-induced haemolysis of human erythrocytes. The total phenolic content was found 50.75 mg/gm of gallic acid equivalent. The extract exhibited significant antioxidant activity in DPPH free radical scavenging assay with IC50 value of 81.42 µg/ml as compared to the standard, BHT (IC50=42.56 µg/ml), Fe2+ ion reducing power assay and chelating power ability. In case of assay for chelating ability, EDTA represented 98.76% chelation while the plant extract showed 82.83% at concentration of 100 ?g/ml. In addition, the methanol extract of bark of this plant was found to moderately inhibit the haemolysis of human erythrocyte. In conclusion, the methanol extract of S. apetala could be valuable candidate for future development for antioxidant activity.Bangladesh Pharmaceutical Journal 19(2): 147-151, 2016

Recently, a substantial body of literature provides strong evidence to support the potentials of Crataeva magna (CM), plant and its extracts in various pathological conditions. Thus, the CM plant extract at various concentrations were prepared and antioxidant activity was evaluated. The fresh leaves and bark of CM were collected and various extracts such as n-Hexane, Chloroform, Ethanol and aqueous extract were prepared. The preliminary phytochemical investigation showed the presence of various phytochemical such as total phenolic, flavonoid compounds and tannins. The ethanolic leaves extract of CM (ELECM) and water leaves extract of CM (WLECM), showed dose dependent increased in free radical scavenging activity in DPPH assay and reducing power assay in present study. Moreover, ethanolic barks extract of CM (EBECM) and water barks extract of CM (WBECM), also showed increased in free radical scavenging activity in DPPH assay and reducing power assay. However, the effects of bark extracts were lower than leaves extracts. In the light of the above consideration, the results of the study revealed that ELECM showed promising antioxidant activity in a dose dependent manner.

Background: The aim of this study is to determine phytochemicals and mineral composition as well as in vitro antioxidant activities of Solanum macrocarpon leaves. Methods: Qualitative phytochemical screening was carried out using standard procedures while Mineral analysis was carried out using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). Solanum macrocarpon leaves were also subjected for measurement of reducing power and antioxidant/radical scavenging activity (2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity). Results: Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of flavonoids, saponins, alkaloids etc. Mineral analysis showed calcium (256.60mg/100g) to be higher in concentration and copper (0.62mg/100g) least in concentration while manganese was absent. Other minerals includes magnesium (81.69mg/100g), potassium (87.22mg/100g), sodium (32.51mg/100g), iron (31.41mg/100g), zinc (1.41mg/100g). Solanum macrocarpon leaves showed maximum antioxidant activity (DPPH free radical scavenging and reducing power capacity) as the higher the concentration, the higher the antioxidant activity, thus the better the free radical scavenging potentials. Conclusion: The data from this study revealed that Solanum macrocarpon has a rich content of phytochemicals, namely, saponins, alkaloids, flavonoids as well as minerals, bioactive components that are associated with health impacts. This study also revealed that Solanum macrocarpon leaves exhibit antioxidant activity. These findings thus suggest that Solanum macrocarpon leaves could act as potent source of antioxidants.
