Abstract Resultative predicates have the aspectual effect of telicizing an atelic activity verb. The function of the postverbal constituent in accomplishments has been taken to be one of providing an end point to the activity, or of a constituent that "measures out" the event denoted by the activity verb. In either case, it delimits the event by providing it with boundaries. Looking at resultative predicates, we observe that they are subject to the requirement that they denote a bounded scale. This requirement is argued to be empirically superior to an alternative restriction stating that the resultative must be a stage-level predicate. The boundedness requirement furthermore provides direct evidence against an approach that treats the resultative as an end point, and supports the claim that it is an event measure. One piece of evidence concerns the 'make + NP+Adjective' construction, in which the adjective denotes the final stage or end point in a change of state, exactly as in the resultative construction. In contrast to the resultative, however, the adjective can be unbounded, as it is not an event measure in this case. We argue that the boundedness requirement on resultative predicates follows directly from treating it as an event measure, since a measure must be bounded as a matter of conceptual necessity.


The article clarifies the structural and semantic features of the attributive in the form of the instrumental case with the semantics of the mode of action in the dialects of Transcarpathia. The functional essence of the attributive is considered, which are called the signs of individual actions, situations of objective reality. Highlighted the functional essence of the attributive instrumental case in the position of the adverb. The purpose of this article is to highlight the formal-syntactic features and semantic manifestations of the peripheral zone of attributiveness, namely, the attributes with the semantics of the mode of action in the form of the instrumental case. The instrumental attributes in the studied dialects characterize various actions, situations and retain semantic and morphological connections with words, phrases, and sentences. They can be synonymous with nouns in other indirect cases or with verb constructions in the form of subordinate clauses. Their ability to convey variable, temporal and situational signs is associated with a specific subject correlation with the attributives in the form of the instrumental case. Achievement of this goal presupposes the solution of the following specific tasks: 1) to establish the initial semantically elementary sentence that underlies the attributives with the semantics of the mode of action, the lexical meanings of the supporting and dependent components; 2) find out the functional and semantic meaning of the attributive syntaxem. Within the framework of the attributive components in the form of the instrumental case, having the semantics of the mode of action, one can distinguish groups: the names of the methods of production processes, the names of the external characteristics of movement in space, the names of the generalized characteristics of the action, characteristics as a result of an action, the external characteristics of a person or animal; the names of the external characteristics of plants; the names of a qualitative characteristic of an individual action.

Abstract We respond to Rodríguez Arrizabalaga’s recent claim that Spanish shows genuine cases of strong resultative constructions, e.g. Juan apuñaló a Tomás hasta la muerte ‘John stabbed Tom to death’, argued to be equivalent to the English construction with the PP to death. This claim is theoretically relevant as it challenges the verb-framed behavior of Spanish with respect to Talmy’s typology. Adopting a constructivist view of argument structure, we argue that Spanish hasta la muerte and English to death constructions of this type involve two completely distinct syntactic configurations, and that only the English to death PP can be regarded as a resultative phrase. We claim that the Spanish hasta PP is syntactically computed as an adjunct external to the argument structure of the predicate and provides a boundary to the predicate it merges with. We thus show that the Spanish construction with hasta la muerte fully conforms to the class of Talmy’s verb-framed languages in that this type of construction is expected to be fully available and productive in this class of languages.

A business website is an example of using design as a marketing tool. Display of charming website with design is an attraction. However, a good website design must be able to display information clearly. Especially how to make the interface possible as it is not confused with the information displayed. Poor interfaces affect the users productivity or experience in visiting a website. This is a visual hierarchy which is the most important principles behind every website design. With an instrumental case study of the approach to produce conclusions that can be applied in designing e-commerce-based website. The goal is to make the website design in line with the content that will increase the website design and increase knowledge about the visual hierarchy of web design and its relation to the user interface.

The main of this article is to establish the elements of the Mathematics Teacher's Specialized Knowledge (MTSK) that are used to give timely attention to situations of affective domain in the classroom. We start from the assumption that to deal with this type of situation it is necessary to know the problem and its causes, but it also requires different knowledge that allows the teacher to deal with these situations effectively. Thus, a qualitative investigation was carried out from an instrumental case study. Regarding the results, it was found that indeed some elements of the MTSK are used to address affective situations in the classroom. For example, knowledge about these strategies, techniques, tasks and appropriate examples is used to promote motivation in students and the usefulness they attribute to mathematics.

This paper focuses on the intensifying use of the fake reflexive resultative construction,as demonstrated in the example Hij lacht zich een breuk om die mop (tit. 'He laughs himselfa fracture because of that joke'). Although the literal use of the (English) fake reflexiveresultative construction has been the subject of several studies, scant attention hasbeen paid to the potential of this construction for conveying an intensifying meaning,though these intensifying uses show an intriguing mix of productivity and lexical idiosyncrasythat deserves careful analysis. This case study will zoom in on the use of theintensifying fake reflexive resultative construction in present-day Belgian and NetherlandicDutch. The analysis will reveal some discrepancies between two national variants ofDutch and shed light on the development of subschemas displaying various degrees ofproductivity on the one hand and the possible lexicalisation of strong combinations on theother.
