EUGENE VODOLAZKIN’S LAURUS AS A NOVELA ABOUT ETERNAL LOVE Even though in Eugene Vodolazkin’s hybrid novel Laurus, the hagiographic and love storylines are inseparable, this paper focuses mainly on the topic of love, or more precisely, on the concept of eternal love. The paper seeks to demonstrate that in his understanding of love, Vodolazkin is inspired, on the one hand, by Vladimir Solovyov and Nikolai Berdyaev’s Christian-Platonist rendering of Eros, and, on the other, by the Orthodox-theological interpretation of passion as sin. In any case, the semantic field of “love”, as seen by Vodolazkin in his novel, includes passion and compassion and unquestionable permanence. The meaning of the adjective “eternal” in “eternal love” first points to the meaning of the Christian concept of eternity. The meaning of the adjective is further discussed and clarified in the framework of Vodolazkin’s metaphysical assumptions about the irrelevance or absence of time.

The study of the universals of the Russian language personality on the model of the associative-verbal network (AVN) proceeds from ontological and epistemological aspects. Ontologically the AVN “inherits” a number of functional properties from the human cognitome hypernetwork. Along with the dissipation of grammar and stochastic formation of the vectors of associative dominants, they can be attributed to universals in the narrow sense of the word (ultimately due to the evolutionary biological specifics of the species). On the one hand, the dissipated character of grammar in the AVN and stochasticity of the emergence of meaningful vectors impose epistemological restrictions on the methods used to study the AVN phenomena. On the other hand, the gradual accumulation of the new Russian corpora of verbal associations opens a window of research perspectives for studying culturally imposed universals of the Russian language personality in current diachrony with reference to ethno-social and regional variability. The formalization of associative-verbal processes is associated with methods of explicating grammar (dissipated in AVN) and its role in the emergent meaning-formation. The author’s techniques of working with the AVN of the Russian language personality on the latest experimental materials (the database SIBAS and its subcorpora) are aimed at explicating the associative profiles of lexico-grammatical phenomena and their relevance for the analysis of the universals in a broad sense of the term, the associative dominants creating a unified but dynamic with their fluctuations semantic field of the personality’s verbal culture.

Abstract The aim of this article is twofold: on the one hand, to point out the various typographical devices used in writing to highlight Anglicisms due to their specific form or meaning. On the other, to examine the different factors contributing to the choice of a particular model which are of two kinds: linguistic, based on the nature of the borrowing and its degree of integration in the language; and stylistic and sociolinguistic, in relation to the attitude of the journalist or writer, which can vary depending on his/her experience, the type of text, its textual function and the semantic field of the Anglicism in question. There are times when variation is found within one single writer, and even within the same text.

Worship and sport. A spatial-liturgical study The main aim of this article is to look into the possible connection there is between worship and sport. Through participatory observation an attempt was made to answer the basic practical theological question, namely “what is going on?” Two spaces in Atteridgeville were visited and compared, the one a worship space and the other a sport space. Similarities and differences were pointed out. Thereafter an attempt was made to answer the second question of practical theological interpretation, namely “why is this going on?” Two themes were used in doing so: spatiality and rituals. Both spaces are important in the lives of the community. The spaces and the rituals create an axis mundi where participation in life can take place through the rituals performed. The information in this article is an abstract of a study that culminated into a model for social cohesion.

Semantic field of violet colors in the works of Stefan ŻeromskiThe analyzed vocabulary material originates from the works of Stefan Żeromski. The violet field comprises therein the colors named: violet, of the violet, lilac – which are used in different grammatical forms of type and numbers. There are no derivative forms of adverbs and verbs and there is no the lila lexeme. The author considers the vocabulary of this thematic field in its textual usages and context functions – as the result of Żeromski’s message – in order to show, on the one hand, how the writer looks at the real world and, on the other hand, the writer’s creations of the presented world. On the basis of the fragment of expanded colors appearing in Żeromski’s works, the author examines the degree of the writer’s artistic sensitivity and his creative opportunities in the use of colors – of the chosen field of colors. The author also examines relations between linguistic and physical indicators of colors, which were fixed in a given national language (including, inter alia, prototypes of colors), and simultaneously were reflected in the collection of texts of this writer. The above composes the background of Żeromski’s masterly abilities in the paintbrush creation of pictures with the help of linguistic and stylistic means.

The present paper deals with the investigation of the category of sacredness of the English religious preaching discourse, considered from the standpoint of theolinguistics. It has been proved that being a secondary form of sacred texts the text of the sermon demonstrates frequent use of sacral vocabulary of different groups: narrow conceptual and terminological vocabulary, which has religious sense and meanings, borrowings from sacred texts (the so-called biblicalisms), and vocabulary of everyday communication, which in the context of preaching becomes religious, and is included in the semantic field of religion on this basis. Different perception of the nature and ways to realize the sermon in the Anglican and Neo-Protestant churches is manifested in the peculiarities of the attitude towards the sacrality of the Word. The process of desacralization of the sermon, recorded in the Neo-Protestant sermons, occurs due to the contrasting use of sacred vocabulary in a stylistically reduced context, on the one hand, and the use of profane vocabulary to nominate sacred phenomena, on the other.

Dante is a ‘civic author’ and a ‘poet of the city’, but what do these labels mean? This chapter envisions the civitas (community) as an emotional and intellectual pivot of Dante’s theological-political thought and literary imagination. The comprehensive analysis of the uses of civitas(and synonyms) in Dante’s lexicon deploys its rich semantic field in the framework of typical late medieval tensions and cleavages. The chapter also focusses on some fundamental problems inherent to this notion—its articulation with, on the one hand, the pluralitas and, on the other hand, the universal monarchy—and dismisses the hypothesis that Dante developed an anti-civitasstance during his life. Finally, the chapter points out the legacy of Dante’s typological approach, namely concerning the new importance attributed to history, gendered personifications, and authorship in a vernacular literary work.

Verbs, as the most important open word class, and prepositions, holding the same status among closed classes, are involved into particular syntactic-semantic relations in the Arabic language. Despite that, verbs and prepositions, as meaningful units, have been treated separately in scientific analyses. Relevant classic grammar texts do not offer the answer to the question which specific verbs are associated with specific prepositions, i.e. which prepositions are associated with specific verbal semantic fields. Ideas like these can be found only in some recent linguistic enquiries, which attempt to connect prepositions and verbal semantic fields through research in two directions: analyzing verbs and the related prepositions, on the one hand, and prepositions and the corresponding verbs, on the other hand. The presence of a significant number of verbal triliters in the text of the Qur'an and their associations with prepositions have led to the formation of numerous verbal semantic fields. This paper draws attention to the most frequent semantic field in the Qur'an, the one related to motion verbs.

The purpose of the article is: to show functions of compliments in the English and Ukrainian languages; to describe the differences between praise, flattery and compliments; to analyze a system of actual methods of modeling the associative content of the meanings of complementary expressions in the semantic field of the philological consciousness of the respondents of different ethnic groups (Englishmen and Ukrainians). The methods of the research are: theoretical ones – categorical and structurally-functional analysis of the texts, the methods of systematization, modeling, generalization; empirical methods – the analysis of novels, a free associative experiment. The results of the research. It was distinguished that among the respondents of the Ukrainian ethnic group we diagnosed the largest number of positive correlations between: the way of the explication of compliments in a form of a sentence and: syntactic constructions (phrases); semantically related compliments formed by the way of identity; creative compliments; semantically related compliments formed by the way of logical adjectivation and: semantically related compliments formed by the way of identity; semantically related compliments formed by the way of belonging, etc. The respondents of the English ethnic group had the highest number of positive correlations between: the way of the explication of compliments in a form of phrases and: semantically similar compliments; creative compliments; emotional and evaluative compliments and: semantically related compliments formed by the way of identity; semantically related compliments formed by the way of logical adjectivation, etc. Conclusions. We’ll formulate the psycholinguistic features of the explication of compliments in Ukrainian and English languages. Such features are: respondents of both Ukrainian and English ethnic groups are characterized by dominated subjective (ideosyncrasic) way of forming complementary expressions. English respondents are also dominated by emotional and evaluative way, while Ukrainians – by creative way in modeling the compliments. English people are more emotional in choosing phrases, word combinations and speech patterns that are complementary expressions, their speech is characterized by expressiveness and imagery. In turn, Ukrainians are more able to form creative expressions in their content, they form associative schemes, which, on the one hand, seem illogical, but, on the other hand, contain a creative context that enriches speech in a great degree, etc.

The first question to be answered, in seeking coordinate systems for geodynamics, is: what is geodynamics? The answer is, of course, that geodynamics is that part of geophysics which is concerned with movements of the Earth, as opposed to geostatics which is the physics of the stationary Earth. But as far as we know, there is no stationary Earth – epur sic monere. So geodynamics is actually coextensive with geophysics, and coordinate systems suitable for the one should be suitable for the other. At the present time, there are not many coordinate systems, if any, that can be identified with a static Earth. Certainly the only coordinate of aeronomic (atmospheric) interest is the height, and this is usually either as geodynamic height or as pressure. In oceanology, the most important coordinate is depth, and this, like heights in the atmosphere, is expressed as metric depth from mean sea level, as geodynamic depth, or as pressure. Only for the earth do we find “static” systems in use, ana even here there is real question as to whether the systems are dynamic or static. So it would seem that our answer to the question, of what kind, of coordinate systems are we seeking, must be that we are looking for the same systems as are used in geophysics, and these systems are dynamic in nature already – that is, their definition involvestime.

Abstract. Two experiments examined the influence of stories on recipients’ self-perceptions. Extending prior theory and research, our focus was on assimilation effects (i.e., changes in self-perception in line with a protagonist’s traits) as well as on contrast effects (i.e., changes in self-perception in contrast to a protagonist’s traits). In Experiment 1 ( N = 113), implicit and explicit conscientiousness were assessed after participants read a story about either a diligent or a negligent student. Moderation analyses showed that highly transported participants and participants with lower counterarguing scores assimilate the depicted traits of a story protagonist, as indicated by explicit, self-reported conscientiousness ratings. Participants, who were more critical toward a story (i.e., higher counterarguing) and with a lower degree of transportation, showed contrast effects. In Experiment 2 ( N = 103), we manipulated transportation and counterarguing, but we could not identify an effect on participants’ self-ascribed level of conscientiousness. A mini meta-analysis across both experiments revealed significant positive overall associations between transportation and counterarguing on the one hand and story-consistent self-reported conscientiousness on the other hand.
