Abstract: Replacing composite bodies by the conventional metallic bodies have many advantages because of high specific strength and high specific stiffness of the composite materials. As compared to the conventional drive shafts, Composite drive shafts have the potential of lighter and longer life with high rotational speed. Nowadays drive shafts are used in two pieces. However, the main advantage of the current design is that only one piece of composite drive shaft is possible that fulfils all the drive shaft requirements. The torsional strength, torsional buckling and bending natural frequency are the main basic requirements considered here. This work is all about the replacing the conventional two-piece steel drive shaft with a one-piece carbon/epoxy. Design of composite drive shaft Classical Lamination Theory is used for the design of composite drive shaft. Finite element analysis (FEA) was used to design composite drive shafts incorporating carbon within an epoxy matrix. From experimental results, it was found that the developed one-piece automotive composite drive shaft had 64% mass reduction, 74% increase in torque capability compared with a conventional two-piece steel drive shaft. It also had 6380 rpm of natural frequency which was higher than the design specification of 3050 rpm. Index Terms: Bending frequency, Composite Materials, Drive shaft, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Power transmission, Torsion, Torsional buckling.

In this article, three small wind turbine blades of different materials were manufactured. Finite element analysis was carried out using finite element software ANSYS 14.5 on modeled blades of National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics 4412 airfoil profile. From finite element analysis, first, two flap-wise natural frequencies and mode shapes of three different blades are obtained. Experimental vibration analysis of manufactured blades was carried out using fast Fourier transform analyzer to find the first two flap-wise natural frequencies. Finally, the results obtained from the finite element analysis and experimental test of three blades are compared. Based on vibration analysis, we found that the natural frequency of glass fiber reinforced plastic blade reinforced with aluminum sheet metal (small) strips increases compared with the remaining blades. An increase in the natural frequency indicates an increase in the stiffness of blade.

Radomes are usually constructed from sandwich structures made of materials which usually have a low dielectric constant so that they do not interfere with electromagnetic waves. Performance of the antenna is increased by the appropriate assortment of materials enabling it to survive under marine applications, and it depends on composite strength-to-weight ratio, stiffness, and resistance to corrosion. The design of a sandwich core submarine radome greatly depends on the material system, number of layers, orientation angles, and thickness of the core material. In this paper, a conceptual design study for a sandwich core submarine radome is carried out with the help of finite element analysis (FEA) using two unidirectional composite materials—glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP)—as a skin material and six different core materials. Conceptual designs are obtained based on constraints on the composite materials’ failure, buckling, and strength. The thickness of the core is reduced under constraints on material and buckling strength. Finite element analysis software ANSYS WORKBENCH is used to carry out all the simulations.

Abstract In this paper, the finite element analysis of circular wedge connections is described, and conclusions for the performance of the connection are derived. In the foreground of the examinations are stresses and deformations while tightening of the connection. Starting with the general structural performance, the influences on power transmission like slope, number of wedges, coefficient of sliding friction and outer hub diameter are discussed. An analytic function to describe the gap pressure within the tightened joint is introduced and rates to explain the problem of centering of circular wedge connections are shown. Finally two concepts for dimensioning are presented and recommendations for application of this connection are given.

The author puts forward a new insulation cross arm, uses the insulation and high strength composite materials (FRP), to replace the steel applied to the RPC pole cross arm, this not only has a full bar maintenance-free features, and can shorten transmission corridor again, for the construction of resource intensive transmission lines has important practical significance. In addition, this paper uses finite element analysis software ANSYS, considering the influence of fluctuating wind, in the modal analysis and dynamic response illustrates the actuality of cross arm application of composite materials.
