For L2 learners, successful acquisition of formulaic sequences (FSs) is recognised as being valuable for academic writing. Studies suggest that cued output exercises requiring an evaluation effort may prove beneficial. The aim of this study was to examine the value of such exercises. Four classes in a Japanese university EAP programme were each assigned a different intervention over a 4-week period. Each intervention required a different degree of involvement with selected target FSs. Writing samples collected from participants before the intervention established no significant difference in target FS use between the groups. Postintervention data, drawn from the difference in individual participant’s pre- and posttest target FS use, revealed significantly increased use only from the group assigned exercises requiring the greatest involvement, suggesting that such exercises may be important for acquisition. These findings are discussed in relation to other studies concerning cued output and evaluation effort.

Introduction: Writing a manuscript for publication is a challenge for those health practitioners whose primary role is to provide clinical services. The aim of this study was to increase the capacity of allied health practitioners who are employed in a clinical setting to submit manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Methods: An action research study design was used to develop a “Writing for Publication” program for nine allied health practitioners who had not previously published a manuscript as lead author. Between May and November 2018, at a regional public hospital service, three 90-minute writing workshops were offered, which included manuscript plan and preparation guide, academic writing instruction, peer review and mentoring by experienced researchers. Data were collected using participant pre- and post-program surveys, post-workshop focus groups and facilitator reflections. Results: All participants reported that their writing skills had improved. Enablers to completing a manuscript for publication included structured preparation, mentoring, training in academic writing skills, protected writing time and external accountability. Challenges included not knowing where or how to start, competing priorities and distractions within and outside of work hours, inadequate academic writing skills and loss of momentum. Two participants submitted their manuscripts for publication by the end of the study and a further manuscript was submitted by the time of writing. Conclusions: Strategies to ensure publication of allied health practitioner research findings need to be integrated into project planning and monitoring processes embedded within a well-supported health service-wide research culture.

Leonard J. Rosen defines academic writing as an “informed, logical, clear, well structured, and based on evidence” (Rosen, 2009) prose style which serves to describe, understand, and further investigate the world around us. Academic writing rests upon common standards of logic and clarity which enable writers to enter into a conversation through their writing. Developing effective writing skills for academic purposes is a crucial aspect of higher education. These skills are indispensable for the students since they affect their overall academic success, but also their life outside the university. The present paper deals with the challenges of developing effective writing skills for academic purposes in the Macedonian language in students in the Republic of North Macedonia. It presents a part of the findings of a five-year research conducted at the higher education institution University American College Skopje (UACS). The aim of the research is to explore the gap between the expected already acquired writing skills at secondary school and the writing skills for academic purposes the students should develop in higher education. The present paper presents the data obtained from the self-evaluation process conducted from spring semester 2015 until spring semester 2019. The quantitative research method was used in the research and the quantitative data obtained were analyzed, textually interpreted, and visually presented. Twenty nine point three percent of the students said that they knew how to write a short essay where they would present evidence for a point of view and 32.4% said that they are not sure how to do this. Even though writing an essay (titled “project assignment”) is a required part of the mandatory State Baccalaureate (Matura) exam since 2010 and all students had completed it in order to enroll at University, 38.3% of the students involved in the research said that they do not know how to do this.

Of all English Language skills, writing poses the greatest challenge for students due to the demands of style, structure and vocabulary. Even if second language learners (L2 learners) can speak the language well enough for everyday activities - shopping, traveling, and so on, producing an academic write-up that is precise, accurate, objective and fully referenced is still quite a task. This study aimed to determine the academic writing strategies used in ESP classrooms. Along with this, the study determined the perceived proficiency of L2 learners in academic writing, based on their ESP test course. The study also reports the needs of L2 learners in academic writing, and how English for Academic Purposes (EAP) instructors can help to improve the writing skills of L2 learners. The study participants consisted of 60 L2 learners from various departments in King Saud University. A questionnaire was used to gather the responses of participants. The data was analyzed using SPSS 20.0 software. The results are displayed in descriptive statistics - frequencies and percentages. Inferences were made from the quantitative data, which formed the bases of discussion of the results of the study. The study found that L2 learners consider their academic writing skills to be adequate. This was reported as perceived proficiency since previous studies have reported discrepancies between the perception of teachers and students. L2 learners also revealed that they need to improve on grammar, vocabulary and punctuation as well as the use of academic writing strategies. The study revealed that majority of the respondents use strategies such as outlining and brainstorming. L2 learners performed above average when they use these writing strategies. However, L2 learners want EAP instructors to improve on core ESP topics including grammar, vocabulary and the use of writing strategies. Still, others want EAP instructors to improve on their teaching methods, as well as create an all-inclusive environment for students.
