The study was carried out to investigate the presence of different phytochemicals as well as to determine the total phenolic and flavonoid contents of green pear/european pear peels and yellow pear/asian pear peels. Phytochemical screening of the pear peels was carried out following standard protocols. Total phenolic content was determined by Folin-Ciocalteu method and total flavonoid contents was determined by Aluminum Chloride Colorimetric method, measured using n-hexane, etil acetate, and methanol. Phenolics, flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, and saponins are present in green pear and yellow pear peels. The total phenol and flavonoid contents are highest in methanol extracts in which green pear peels have a higher concentration than yellow pear peels. In conclusion, the green and yellow pear peels are rich in phenolic compounds and have great potential as natural antioxidants. Therefore, the results of this research should be considered to provide the possibility for future developments of highly functional antioxidants.

This experiment aims to determine the correlation of total phenolic and flavonoid content of jati putih leaves fraction (Gmelina arborea Roxb.) towards Antioxidant activity .  Sample was extracted by maceration method using ethanol 70% to obtain the ethanol extract (EE), followed by liquid-liquid extraction method to obtain fraction of ethyl acetate (EA) and n-Hexane (EH). The phytochemical screening  and determination of total phenolic and flavonoid content were done by colorimetric method. Antioxidant activity were done by DPPH, FRAP and ABTS methods. Phytochemical screening showed positive results for flavonoids, phenolic and saponins.  The largest total phenolic content was found on EA (11,59 µg/ml ± 0,3 %b/b EAG) and the largest total flavonoid content was on EA (3,88 µg/ml ± 0,02 %b/b EK). The total phenolic and flavonoid content of Jati putih leaves has a correlation with antioxidant activity. The coefficient correlation of activity on reducingDPPH radical was 56,7% (total of phenolic content) and 57,8% (total of flavonoid content) and on iron reduction power in FRAP method  was 99,9% (total of phenolics and flavonoids content). The relationship with the activity in reducing radical ABTS obtained coefficient correlation of 57,0% and 58,1% for total phenolic and flavonoids contents, respectively.

Abstract Objective: The aim of the study was to determine the content of polyphenols and flavonoids from sixteen selected medicinal plants from the spontaneous Romanian flora and fifteen tinctures obtained with propylene glycol. Methods: The polyphenols were determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu method while the flavonoids by using a colorimetric method from the 10th edition of the Romanian Pharmacopoeia. The antioxidant activities of the most common nine medicinal plants and fifteen tinctures were determined by DPPH and ABTS methods. Results: The results highlighted that the phenolic compounds and flavonoids have contributed to their antioxidant activities and the medicinal plants and tinctures included in the study are rich sources of natural antioxidants. Conclusions: There are a wide variety of extraction methods for the determination of phenolics and flavonoids. The study confirms a correlation between phenolic and flavonoid contents obtained by using the DPPH and ABTS tests.

In this study, total phenolic compounds which possess health-promoting effects and provide basic nutrition were aimed to determine the alterations in different grapevine leaves. Total phenolic content was determined using Folin-Ciocalteu colorimetric method by using a spectrophotometer. At the result of the study, it was determined that contents of total phenolic in leaves collected from different grape cultivars were varied to cultivars and grape leaves had high phenolic compounds as berries. Therefore the grape leaves especially wine grapes such as Narince, Boğazkere ve Kalecik Karası may be used as an easily accessible source of natural antioxidants and food supplement at pharmaceutical and food industry.

Antioxidant activity, total phenolic and total flavonoid contents of some traditional medicinal plants grown in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, were investigated. Plant sample are Macaranga gigantea leaf, Ceiba pentandra leaf, Ceiba pentandra bark, Blumea balsamifera leaf and Artocarpus altilis leaf. Natural antioxidants from plant species are considered safe. Therefore, people are now more interest in finding out the treatment through natural remedies. The plant's total phenolic content was determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu method, while total flavonoid content was determined by the Colorimetric assay method. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH radical scavenging assay. The results showed that plant samples tested contained 22.02 to 214.88 µg of gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/mg extract represented the total phenolic content. The flavonoid content of the samples was in range from 50.00 to 896.67 µg of catechin equivalents (CE)/mg extract. The plant samples displayed ability to inhibit DPPH free radical formation by 59-81% at 50 ppm concentration. These finding suggest that these plants could possess natural antioxidants and give a scientific basis to the traditional uses of the investigated plants.

Epidendrum coryophorum belongs to the Orchidaceae family. Traditional uses of some species for this genus include infusions of the leaves used for kidney problems, treat influenza, conjunctivitis, liver pain, relieve kidney symptoms, and hypoglycemic effect. This work's objective was to determine the phytochemical profile of the ethanolic extract of Epidendrum coryophorum leaves and to evaluate the potential anti-inflammatory activity in vitro of the extract employing the erythrocyte membrane stabilization method. The phytochemical screening carried out in this work suggested phenols, coumarins, flavonoids, tannins, steroids, and sterols in the ethanolic extract of Epidendrum coryophorum leaves. Cardiotonic glycosides and carbohydrates were also found. The ethanolic extract's UV-Vis spectrum showed absorption maxima at 268 nm and 332 nm, which could correspond to flavonoids of the flavonoid classes, 3-OH substituted flavonols, or isoflavones. The quantitative determination of total phenols of the ethanolic extract was carried out using the Folin-Ciocalteu method. The total phenolic content expressed as mg Gallic acid equivalent (G.A.E.) per gram of extract was found to be 19,96 mgGAE/g of Epidendrum coryophorum. The ethanolic extract of Epidendrum coryophorum leaves showed hemolysis inhibition values ​​of 18,19% at 1,0 mg/mL, 38,98% at 1,5 mg/mL and 40,94% at 2,5 mg/mL compared with aspirin (positive control) giving values ​​of 65,33% at 1,0 mg/mL, 72,26% at 1,5 mg/mL and 73,75% at 2,5 mg/mL. The values ​​obtained for inhibition of hemolysis with ethanolic extract, compared with the values ​​obtained with a pure anti-inflammatory, are significant and demonstrate anti-inflammatory activity in Epidendrum coryophorum.   The focus of the present study was to determine the association of the anti-oxidant activity of Costus speciosus (Koen Ex. Retz.) Sm. with the total phe-nolic content and the total flavonoid content. The antioxidant activity of the extracts was quantified by diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. The total phenolic content was determined by the Folin-Ciocalteau method and the total flavonoid content was determined by the aluminium chloride method. Among the four extracts of the plant, the ethanol extract exhibited the high-est antioxidant activity and also the highest total phenolic and flavonoid con-tents. A strong correlation was observed between the antioxidant activity and the total phenolic and flavonoid contents. A statistical model was de-rived to explain this dependence and a non-linear association was observed between the antioxidant activity and the total flavonoid content.

Plant phenolics and flavonoids play a great role in scavenging free radicals in the body and act as antioxidants. Thus their determination is sometimes nedded. Total antioxidant capacity, total phenolic and flavonoid contents of the extracts of 10 medicinal plants (Lochnera rosea, Allamanda cathartica, Asplenium platyneuron, Euphorbia prostrate, Baphia nitida, Crotolaria retusa, Zapoteca portoricensis, Platycerium bifurcatum, Mussaenda afzelii and Craterosiphon scandens) from 7 botanical families growing in the tropical rainforest of Nigeria were included in this study. The total antioxidant capacity of the extracts was assessed by using the phosphomolybdate method. The phenolic content was determined by using Folin-Ciocalteau assay, while the total flavonoid was determined by the aluminium chloride colorimetric assay. The results obtained showed that the total antioxidant capacity for all the extracts were in the range of 0.888 ± 0.75 to 0.938 ± 0.00 mg EAA/g. The results showed that E. prostrate, P. bifurcatum and A. platyneuron were found to be the richest source of phenolic (97.77 ± 0.77, 87.62 ± 1.22 and 82.33 ± 0.30 mg GAE/g) while B. nitida and M. afzelii had the least total phenolic content (11.67 ± 0.09 and11.18 ± 0.30 mg GAE/g). The highest total flavonoid content was revealed in P. bifurcatum (648.67 ± 12.3 mg QE) while M. afzelii also had the least total flavonoid content (3.67 ± 0.00 mg QE/g). Antioxidant activity, total phenolic and flavonoid content of several indigenous species of ferns in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 576-580. This study aimed to determine the total phenolic and flavonoids content and antioxidant activity of ethanol extract of several indigenous species of ferns in East Kalimantan. Total phenolic content was determined by Folin-Ciocalteau method and flavonoid content was measured by colorimetric method. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) method. The result of photochemical screening indicated that the leaves of Plagiogyria pycnophylla, Plagiogyria glauca, and Stenochlaena palustris contained alkaloid, flavonoid, tannin, saponin, and steroid while Acrostichum aureum contained flavonoid, tannin, saponin and steroid. The result showed extract Acrostichum aureum had the highest total phenolic content (366.4573 ± 2.2117 mg GAE.g-1), flavonoid content (228.6087 ± 2.2548 mg QE.g-1), and very strong antioxidant activity with IC50 value 29.5303 ppm. There is positive correlation between total phenolic content, flavonoid with antioxidant activity.

Polygonum cuspidatum Sieb.et Zucc. (Japanese knotweed)  is considered an invasive plant in several countries in Europe, whilst being used in the Traditional Chinese Medicine for various inflammatory diseases, hepatitis, tumors, diarrhea, suppurative dermatitis, gonorrhea, hyperlipidemia, favus athlete’s foot, osteomyelitis. The present study is focused on the characterization of different extracts of Polygonum cuspidatum Sieb.et Zucc.  buds, by determination of the influence of different solvents on the extraction yield, the phenolic content and their antioxidant capacity. The solvents used were ethanol, propylene glycol, methanol, acid water and alkaline water, in different combinations. The UV-Vis spectra were recorded and the total phenolic content was determined by Folin-Ciocalteu colorimetric method, comparing the extraction yields with the total phenolic contents. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by 1,1-diphenyl-2-hydrazyl (DPPH) assay. The extracts analyzed had total phenolic values from  1048 mg/100g to 1426 mg/100g fresh buds, expressed as gallic acid equivalents, the highest extraction index being 96.3, in good agreement with the antioxidant capacity. These data suggest that Polygonum cupidatum  Sieb.et Zucc. buds could be a rich source of natural antioxidants and a good candidate as an ingredient in functional food, cosmetics and drugs for the prevention of  the negative effects of oxidative stress on humans.
