Social support and mental health status of internal migrants in Beijing

We investigated the mental health status of 320 internal migrants in Beijing according to gender, age, marital status, and monthly income, and examined the relationship between their mental health status and social support mechanisms. Participants completed the self-report Symptom Checklist-90-R and Social Support Rating Scale. Results showed that their mental health was significantly worse than the Chinese adult norm as assessed in 2017. Participants' social support varied according to age, marital status, and monthly income. Female participants younger than 30 years old with a monthly income lower than 3,000 yuan comprised the group with the most mental health disorder symptoms. They thus required greater personal attention to their health. The results suggested that social support can predict mental health among internal migrants. Directions for further research are discussed.

Background Although many studies have analyzed mental health problems in college students in China, the associations of mental health with individual and family circumstances, academic performance, and social support were rarely discussed. Objectives The study aimed to determine the mental health status and its associated factors among college students in China. Methods An online survey was conducted on 300 students selected through a cluster sampling strategy in a university in Hubei, China, tapping into sociodemographic characteristics of the participants, their mental health status measured by the modified Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90), and social support measured by the Social Support Rating Scale. Multivariate linear regression models were established to identify predictors of the SCL-90 scores. Results Mental health disorders were found in 8% of the respondents, with obsessive compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity and depression as the top three reported problems. Compared with the national population norms of university students in 2014, our study participants had higher scores in SCL-90. There were statistically significant difference in the Global Severity index (GSI) and all nine subscales scores (p<0.05). Poorer self-rated health, higher study pressure, and lower social support were significant predictors of higher SCL-90 scores (p<0.05) after adjustment for variations in other variables. Conclusions College students in Hubei, China may experience a range of different mental health problems, which are associated with their individual, study, and social circumstances.

Introduction: The elderly need social support to reduce their physical and mental disabilities. Perceived social support is one of the effective factors in the lifestyle of older adults. Objective: This study aimed to determine the association between perceived social support and mental health status among older adults. Materials and Methods: This research is a cross-sectional analytical study. The study data were collected using a perceived social support (PSS) scale and general health questionnaire-12 (GHQ-12). A total of 302 eligible older adults were selected through a random sampling method from primary health centers in the north, south, east, west, and center of Tehran. The inclusion criteria were those community-dwelling older adults aged ≥60 years and with normal cognitive abilities. The collected data were analyzed using t test, ANOVA, the Pearson correlation, and multiple linear regressions. Results: The mean ±SD age of older adults was 70.01 ±6.29 years. Their mean ±SD scores of the PSS and GHQ-12 were 130.95 ±16.05 and 7.29 ±5.55, respectively. The results showed no significant relationship between demographic variables and PSS. There was a significant inverse correlation between the PSS score and the GHQ-12 score (P= 0.01, r= -0.878). The PSS explained 0.66 of the total variances of “positively phrased items” of GHQ-12 (adjusted R2= 0.66) and 0.76 of the total variances of “negatively phrased items” of GHQ-12 (adjusted R2= 0.76). Conclusion: Our findings showed that the PSS and mental health are at a desirable level in this study, and the PSS is not affected by demographic variables. The PSS is a promoting factor for mental health status among older adults.

AbstractObjectiveThis paper studied the relationship between personality traits and mental health conditions of medical personnel to provide a basis and reference for the implementation of targeted education on mental health.MethodsA self-report inventory, the Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90), was used to investigate the mental health status of 548 medical personnel dealing with the new coronavirus pneumonia in eight provinces and cities of China.ResultsThe overall mean SCL-90 score and mean values of factors (somatization, obsessive-compulsive, anxiety, phobic anxiety, and psychoticism) of the medical personnel were significantly higher than in the norm group (p < 0.05), while their average interpersonal sensitivity score was significantly lower (p < 0.01). In addition, personal factors affecting the mental health status of medical personnel were identified. ( all p < 0.05).ConclusionThe overall mental health status of medical personnel responding to new coronavirus pneumonia is generally higher than that of the norm group in China. The results of this study should contribute to measures to alleviate the psychological pressures on medical personnel dealing with the new coronavirus epidemic in China.

Background: The number of internal migrant children in China has reached 35.8 million by the end of 2010. Previous studies revealed inconsistent findings regarding the mental health status of rural-to-urban migrant adolescents, as well as the impact of peer, teacher and parental support on the mental health of Chinese adolescent migrants. Aims: Using a comparative approach, this study attempted to compare the mental health status between migrant and urban-born adolescents and to clarify the specific roles of different sources of social support in the mental health of migrant and urban adolescents. Method: A cross-sectional survey using a cluster convenience sampling strategy was performed in Beijing, China. A structured questionnaire was filled out by 368 rural-to-urban migrant adolescents and 325 urban-born adolescents. Results: A significant difference was found only for positive affect (PA) but not for negative affect (NA) between the two groups, favouring the urban-born adolescents. Social support from all the three sources were all predictive of PA among rural-to-urban migrant adolescents, while only peer support contributed to PA among urban-born adolescents. Unexpectedly, teachers’ support contributed to an increase in NA among urban-born adolescents. Conclusion: The findings contribute to understanding of the mental health status of migrant adolescents in China and the differential impact of the various sources of social support on migrant and urban-born adolescents. Also the findings may inform the development of mental health services and programmes that can potentially benefit a large number of internal migrant adolescents in China.

Abstract Background This study sought to understand the mental health status of Beijing’s general population, analyze the risk factors that affect it, and provide a scientific basis for promoting the physical and mental health of the general population. Methods A cross-sectional design was used. Overall sampling was used to select 6,364 people who had undergone a physical examination from January to December 2018 and volunteered to participate in an assessment of their mental health. We used the SCL-90 to establish the current normal mental health model of the general population in Beijing. After using the PEM System to export and automatically generate Excel files, SPSS 19.00 was utilized for statistical analysis. Descriptive statistical analysis methods were used to analyze the mental health status of the respondents and the mean and standard deviation of each factor. A t-test was used to compare the mental health of the general population in Beijing with the Chinese norm in 1986. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to explore the influencing factors of the mental health of the general population in Beijing. Results The average score of each factor of the SCL-90 in Beijing's general population was between 1.28 and 1.75, with no significant peaks. The scores of various factors in the general population in Beijing were relatively close, and their mental health remained stable. The analysis of the demographic variables of gender, education, age, marital status, and monthly income showed that monthly income ( β=-0.027, p<0.05) and gender ( β=-0.026,p<0.05) had significant effects on the SCL-90 score of the general population. Conclusion The mental health level of Beijing’s general population was lower than the Chinese norm in 1986. Male mental health problems were prominent and low-income people were prone to psychological problems. It is imperative to strengthen the construction of a mental health service system and standardized management among the Chinese population. Strengthening the popularization of mental health knowledge, guiding the Chinese population to cultivate a positive attitude, preventing bad attitudes, encouraging the use of scientific methods to deal with psychological behavioral problems, and early targeted measures can reduce the occurrence of serious psychological problems.

Abstract BackgroundSocial support could improve college students’ mental health status. However, mental health varies across different geographic areas, and most of previous studies only included small sample sizes, thus the nationwide survey are warranted. This study sought to estimate the association between social support quality (SSQ) and mental health among Chinese college students using data yielding from a nationwide survey.MethodsA cross-sectional study with a web-based questionnaire survey was conducted in Wuhan, China, from October 2017 to February 2018. A total of 11093 college students were recruited from 18 colleges or universities through multi-stage random cluster sampling method. The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support scale and 12-items General Health Questionnaire were used to estimate students’ SSQ and mental health status, respectively. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify the association between SSQ and the mental health disorder in college students.ResultsA total of 10,676 (96.24%) college students were included in this study. Of them, 21.4% were identified as having a mental disorder. Students being a female, aged 18-22 years old, whose mother held a college degree and above, and drinking alcohol had more risks of being mental health problems (P <0.05). However, having general or higher family economic levels, working and resting regularly, and sleeping ≥ 7 hours could be preventive factors for mental health problem (P <0.05). Especially, with the improvement of SSQ, there was a decreasing trend in the risk of being mental disorder.ConclusionMental health disorder is an important public health challenge among college students in China. Improving SSQ could be the practical and valuable method to prevent college students’ mental problem.
