Self compatibility cross in cocoa is a useful criterion in utilizing germplasm collection. Evaluation of self-compatibility crosses on cocoa clones has been carried out in Kaliwining Experimental Station of ICCRI by treating artificial self-pollination. The observed clones were TSH 858, ICS 60, ICS 13, UIT 1, KW 162, KW 165, KW 163, DR 1, DR 2, DRC 16, DRC 15, KKM 22, Na 32, Na 33 and DR 38. Self-compatibility crosses were identified by percentage of fruit set evaluated during 6 consecutive weeks after pollination. The results showed that the percentage of fruit set were significantly different among clones in the range of 0—46.34%. Three groups of compatibility of cocoa clones were identified i.e. first, self-incompatible clones of DR 1, Na 32, Na 33; second, partially self compatible clones of DR 38, TSH 858, ICS 60, ICS 13, UIT 1, KW 162, KW 165, KKM 22; and third, self-compatible clones of DR 2, DRC 16,DRC 15, KW 163. Clones which perform self-incompatible and partially self-compatible furthermore can be used as female parents in the production of hybrids. Key words: self-compatibility, Theobroma cacao, clones.

Self-compatibility of local olive (Olea europaeaL.) accessions and of the cultivars “Frantoio” and “Leccino” was investigated in Garda Lake area, northern Italy. Intercompatibility was determined for “Casaliva,” “Frantoio,” and “Leccino,” as well as the effects of foliar Boron applications (0, 262, 525, or 1050 mg·L−1) applied about one week before anthesis on fruit set, shotberry set, and onin vitropollen germination. Following self-pollination, fruit set was significantly lower and the occurrence of shot berries significantly higher than those obtained by open pollination. No significant effect of controlled cross-pollination over self-pollination on fruit set and shotberry set was detectable. B treatments increased significantly fruit set in “Frantoio” and “Casaliva” but not in “Leccino.” B sprays had no effect on shotberry set, suggesting that these parthenocarpic fruits did not strongly compete for resources allocation and did not take advantage of increased B tissue levels. Foliar B application enhancedin vitropollen germination, and the optimal level was higher for pollen germination than for fruit set. Our results highlight the importance of olive cross pollination for obtaining satisfactory fruit set and the beneficial effect of B treatments immediately prior to anthesis, possibly by affecting positively the fertilisation process and subsequent plant source-sink relations linked to fruitlet retention.

Cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) contains self-compatible and self-incompatible genotypes. In the greenhouse, pollen germination and fruit set failed to occur after self-pollination of an incompatible genotype (IMC 30); however, if the self-pollinated flowers were enclosed in plastic vials for 6 h after pollination, pollen germination was 95% The promotive effect of enclosed pollination on pollen germination was due to the accumulation of CO2 (8.9 % v/v). Despite the high rate of pollen germination, fruit set was only 45%. Seeds produced from self-pollinations using this technique were viable, with 95% germination. Cross-pollination with `Amelonado' pollen resulted in 100% pollen germination and 46% fruit set. Enclosure of cross-pollinated flowers did not improve the percentage of fruit set. Sections made through the ovary 48 h after enclosed self-pollination indicated that the majority of ovules contained a zygote; however, some ovules still contained unfused male and female gametes and polar nuclei. Self-incompatibility in this genotype is expressed at two stages in the process leading to fruit set. The first is at the pollen germination stage and can be overcome by CO2 treatment; the second is at the gametic fusion stage.

In clonal species, sexual and asexual systems interact to create a hierarchy of reproduction. For example, self-pollination can occur within pollination units, flowers, ramets, or clones. We investigated the reproductive biology of a natural population of Iris versicolor using pollination manipulations and observations of pollinator behaviour. We found that (i) individuals were completely self-compatible, (ii) selfing rates were close to 100%, (iii) autonomous self-pollination can occur through stigma–anther contact or wind action, (iv) most seed and fruit set can be accounted for by insect pollination, and (v) facilitated self-pollination likely occurs because pollinators frequently visit more than one pollination unit within a flower. Our observations showed that flowers pass through three stages: (i) a male stage (in which pollen is freely available, but stigmas are inaccessible, preventing autogamy); (ii) a female stage (in which stigma flaps have reflexed and are receptive, but pollinators may have already removed most pollen grains, structuring opportunities for geitonogamy); and (iii) a strongly autogamous stage (in which stigma flaps have curled back to contact anthers, leading to delayed autonomous self-pollination). This hierarchy of relatedness among mates determines the genetic consequences of vegetative and sexual reproduction in clonal plants and influences their evolution. The breeding system of Banksia ilicifolia was assessed by performing controlled hand-pollination manipulations on flowers in a natural population in Perth, Western Australia. The percentage of 2000 flowers per treatment converted to fruits and seeds was assessed across 24 recipient plants following (1) self-pollination, (2) local outcross pollination (same population), (3) non-local outcross pollination (pollen sourced from another population 30 km away), (4) unpollinated but bagged flowers and (5) unpollinated, unbagged flowers (natural pollination). The relative performance of the resulting seeds was assessed by seed weight, germination rates and, in an unplanned component of the study, resistance to a fungal pathogen. The percentage of flowers converted to fruits following self-pollination was low (0.9%), but demonstrated self-compatibility. Fruit set following cross-pollinations (3.6 and 3.3% for non-local and local crosses, respectively) was significantly greater than that following self-pollination, open-pollination (0.4%) and autogamous (0.04%) treatments. Low fruit set for open-pollinated flowers, compared with self- and outcross-pollination treatments, suggests pollen limitation. Pollen tubes were observed in 15 and 20% of upper styles of flowers hand-pollinated with self and local outcross pollen, respectively. Seed germination was dependent on the source of pollen, where fewer selfed seeds germinated (37%) than did both non-local and local outcrossed seeds (83 and 91%, respectively). Selfed seedlings showed poorer survival (33.3%) following fungal attack than both non-local and local outcrossed seeds (69.2 and 68.5%, respectively). Only 13% of selfed seeds survived to be 2-month-old seedlings, compared with 63% for non-local and 57% for local outcrossed seeds. Ultimately, for 2000 flowers hand-pollinated with self pollen, only three seedlings survived to an age of 16 weeks, compared with 37 and 45 seedlings for local-cross and non-local cross treatments on 2000 hand-pollinated flowers, respectively. These results indicate that in this population, B. ilicifolia is self-compatible, but preferentially outcrossing, with strong early acting inbreeding depression. Consequently, the breeding system of B. ilicifolia promotes the maintenance of genetic variation and a high genetic load.

Partial to complete self-incompatibility is normal in most Vaccinium L. (Ericaceae) species. Wild blueberry plants of several Florida provenances and species were self- and cross-pollinated in a greenhouse free of pollinators. Fruit set of V. darrowii Camp (2x), V. corymbosum L. (4x), V. arboreum Marsh (2x), and F1 (V. darrowii × V. corymbosum) hybrids was higher after cross-pollination than after self-pollination. Partial to complete self-incompatibility was present in V. darrowii, V. corymbosum, and their tetraploid F1 hybrids. The three V. arboreum clones tested were fully self-incompatible. Intra- and interpopulation crosses in V. corymbosum, V. darrowii, and V. darrowii × V. corymbosum hybrids were highly successful, and self-pollination reduced all fertility parameters. Advanced selections of V. corymbosum were the most self-compatible clones tested, possibly because self-compatibility has been increased by breeders selecting for reliable fruit set in large fields planted with one or a few clones. One southern highbush selection and two F1 hybrids had fruit set of more than 70% after self-pollination. These plants could be potentially used to breed plants that could be planted in single blocks providing reliable yield.

The reproductive biology of exotic species affects their capacity to become naturalised and invasive in non-native areas. Selfing is a common trait in many invasive plants probably because it provides reproductive assurance under low availability of pollination vectors and sexual partners. Nonetheless, the predominantly self-incompatible Australian Acacia species are among the most aggressive plants worldwide. To address whether there have been changes in selfing ability and natural reproductive success of A. longifolia during invasion, we compared one population in the invaded area (Portugal) with one population in the native range (Australia). We specifically assessed floral traits, fruit set and offspring traits for selfing and open-pollination treatments. Within each pollination treatment, no differences were found between areas, suggesting that the level of self-compatibility has not changed during invasion. However, the number of aborted seeds and seed size were significantly different between pollination treatments in Australia but not in Portugal. There were significant differences in the number of seeds per pod and in seed weight between ranges. A lower number of aborted seeds, a higher number of fully developed seeds and a greater seed size were found in the invaded area for both pollination treatments. In spite of the low selfing ability of A. longifolia in the invaded area, there was an increase in the quantity and size of the seeds produced in the new region, even for self-pollinated fruits, which might contribute to A. longifolia invasiveness.

Effect of different fertilizers on the control of anthracnose disease, yield and quality of mango cv Amrapali was investigated. Application of combined fertilizers gave the highest fruit set, fruit retention and fresh fruits, therefore, produced the highest yield per plant and per hectare. The highest number of healthy fruits was found from 2nd year crop and the lowest was obtained from 1st year. The highest (8.47 t/ha) yield was obtained from 2nd year and the lowest (4.58 t/ha) was obtained from 1st year crop. Among the treatments, combined application of NPK, ZnSo4, Gypsum and Cowdung gave the highest (50.67) number of healthy fruits and the lowest (16) was obtained from untreated plant. The highest (12.41 t/ha) yield was obtained from combined application of NPK, ZnSo4, Gypsum and Cowdung and the lowest (3.88 t/ha) was obtained from untreated plant. In respect of combined effect, the highest (15.22 t/ha) yield was obtained from 2nd year x T9 treated plant and the lowest (2.95 t/ha) was found in untreated 1st year plant. Literature dealing with flowering and fertilisation of quince is scarce. Most controversial and scanty are informations on observations of self- and cross-pollination. According to our observations, differences in blooming time are few (2-3) days only, thus flowering of most varieties is synchronous. The varieties observed are grouped as early, intermediate and late flowering ones. Self fertility of the individual varieties, however, was not assessed unequivocally, therefore it is recommended, by safety reasons, to consider quince actually as a whole to be auto-incompatible. Artificial self-pollination (or rather geitonogamy) as well as cross pollination with other varieties increased substantially fruit set if compared with the results of natural self-pollination (autogamy). According to the fruit set of their open pollinated flowers, varieties have been classified according to fertility as low (below 10 %), medium (between 10 and 20 %) and high (more than 20 %). Cross fertility of varieties is highly variable depending on combination and on season. Contradictory data are probably due to the sensitivity of quince to conditions of search. Better fruit set was coincident with higher number of stout seeds per fruit. Well developed seeds are definitely a prerequisite of larger fruit size.

<p>ABSTRAK<br />Sampai saat ini informasi pengaruh jarak tanam dan dosis pupuk<br />terhadap produktivitas, dan viabilitas benih nilam (Pogostemon cablin<br />Benth) masih terbatas. Untuk itu penelitian ini dilakukan dengan tujuan<br />mendapatkan jarak tanam dan dosis pupuk yang optimum untuk produksi<br />benih/setek nilam. Penelitian dilakukan di Kebun Percobaan (KP)<br />Sukamulya, Balai Penelitian Tanaman Rempah dan Industri Lain (Balittri),<br />Pakuwon, Parungkuda, Sukabumi, dari Januari sampai November 2010.<br />Percobaan faktorial, dengan tiga faktor dan tiga ulangan, disusun dalam<br />rancangan petak terbagi dua kali (RPPT). Petak utama adalah dua varietas<br />nilam yaitu Sidikalang dan Lhokseumawe. Anak petak adalah tiga jarak<br />tanam yaitu (1) 1 x 0,5 m; (2) 1 x 0,7 m; dan (3) 1 x 1 m. Anak-anak petak<br />adalah dua dosis pemupukan yaitu : 1) 30 ton pupuk kandang, 300 kg urea,<br />150 kg SP-36, dan 300 kg KCl/th, dan 2) 45 ton pupuk kandang, 450 kg<br />urea, 225 kg SP-36, dan 450 kg KCl/th. Ukuran plot 8,4 x 5 m. Parameter<br />yang diamati adalah pertumbuhan tanaman (tinggi tanaman, jumlah<br />cabang primer, sekunder, dan tersier), produksi benih pertanaman,<br />diameter bagian pangkal, tengah, dan pucuk dari cabang primer dan<br />sekunder, kadar karbohidrat dan serat, dan viabilitas benih setek.<br />Pengamatan dilakukan pada umur enam bulan setelah tanam (6 BST).<br />Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa : (1) varietas Sidikalang dengan<br />dosis pemupukan 45 ton pupuk kandang, 450 kg urea, 225 kg SP-36, dan<br />450 kg KCl/th, menghasilkan jumlah cabang primer paling tinggi yaitu<br />14,29; (2) jarak tanam 1 x 0,5 m menghasilkan benih setek tertinggi<br />(73.555 stek/1.000 m 2 ). Rata-rata diameter benih berasal dari pangkal ≥ 5<br />mm, sedangkan rata-rata diameter benih berasal dari pucuk ≥ 4 mm; (3)<br />Viabilitas benih pada 0 dan 4 hari setelah penyimpanan ≥ 80%. Jarak<br />tanam 1 x 0,5 m dengan dosis pupuk kandang sebanyak 30 ton, 300 kg<br />urea, 150 kg SP-36, dan 300 kg KCl pertahun merupakan dosis yang<br />optimal untuk produksi benih/setek nilam. Kombinasi perlakuan<br />pemupukan 30 ton pupuk kandang, 300 kg urea, 150 kg SP-36, 300 kg<br />KCl/th dengan jarak tanam 1 x 0,5 m menghasilkan keuntungan tertinggi<br />yaitu: Rp 6.668.500 dengan nilai B/C 2,05.<br />Kata kunci : Pogostemon cablin Benth, jarak tanam, pemupukan,<br />produksi, kualitas benih/setek</p><p>ABSTRACT<br />Effect of Spacing and Fertilizer Dosages on Production<br />and Viability of Patchouli Cutting Seeds<br />Information on the effect of plant density and fertilizer dosage on<br />the production and viability of patchouli seeds is still limited. This<br />experiment was aimed at finding out optimum plant spacing and fertilizer<br />dosage for improving production and quality of patchouli cutting seeds.<br />The experiment was conducted at Sukamulya experimental station of<br />Indonesian Spice and Industrial Crops Research Institute (ISICRI),<br />Pakuwon, Sukabumi from January through November 2010. This<br />experiment was consisted of three factors and three replicates and was<br />arranged in a split-split-plot design. The main plots were two varieties of<br />patchouli, i.e. V1 = Sidikalang and V2 = Lhokseumawe. The sub plots<br />were three plant spacing dimentions, i.e. S1 (1 x 0.5 m), S2 (1 x 0.7 m),<br />and S3 (1 x 1 m). The sub-sub plots were two levels of fertilizer dosage,<br />i.e. F1 (manure; urea, SP-36, and KCl of 30 t; 450, 225, and 450 kg/ha,<br />respectively) and F2 (manure; urea, SP-36, and KCl of 45 t; 300, 150, and<br />450 kg/year, respectively). Variables observed were plant growth (plant<br />height; number of primary, secondary, and tertiary branches), seed<br />productivity and viability, diameter of bottom, medium, and upper of<br />cutting seeds. The results of experiment indicated that Sidikalang variety,<br />treated with 45 tons of manure, 450 kg urea, 225 kg SP-36, and 450 kg<br />KCl per hectare produced the highest number of primary branches<br />compared to other treatments. Plant spacing of 1 x 0.5 m produced the<br />highest number of cutting seeds (73,555 stumps/1,000m 2 ). The averaged<br />diameters of cutting seeds from basal were ≥ 5 mm while those from top<br />were ≥ 4 mm. Viability of the cutting seeds at 0 and 4 days after storage<br />was ≥ 80%. Plant spacing 1 x 0.5 m with dosage of fertilizer 30 ton dung<br />manure, 300 kg urea, 150 kg SP-36, and 300 kg KCl per year is the dosage<br />optimum for producing seed/cutting of patchouli. Combination of fertilizer<br />dosages of 30 tons manure, 300 kg urea, 150 kg SP-36, and 300 kg KCl<br />per year and plant spacing of 1 x 0.5 m produced the highest profit as<br />much as Rp 6,668,500 with B/C value of 2.05.<br />Key words: Pogostemon cablin Benth, plant spacing, fertilizer,<br />production, cutting seed quality</p>
