This research have a purpose to know is there an influence of problem solving abilty to students mathematical thinking, and to know how strong problem solving ability affect students mathematical thinking. This research used descriptive quantitative method, which a population is all of students that taking discrete mathematics courses both in department of Information Systems and department of mathematics education. Based on the results of data analysis showed that there are an influence of problem solving ability to students mathematical thinking either at department of mathematics education or at department of information systems. In this study, it was found that the influence of problem solving ability to students mathematical thinking which take place at mathematics education department is stonger than at information system department. This is because, at mathematics education department, problem-solving activities more often performed in courses than at department of information system. Almost 75% of existing courses in department of mathematics education involve problem solving to the objective of courses, meanwhile, in the department of information systems, there are only 10% of these courses. As a result, mathematics education department student’s are better trained in problem solving than information system department students. So, to improve students’ mathematical thinking, its would be better, at fisrtly enhance the problem solving ability.

The importance of problem solving in mathematics has been attested to by many individuals and groups (e.g., Snowmass 1973; NCSM 1977; CBMS 1982). Furthermore, the belief seems to be common that the development of students' problem-solving abilities is one of the most important goals of mathematics education. In view of the importance of problem solving, it is templing to argue that problem solving and mathematical thinking are in fact different names tor the same activity. However, such an argument would provide too narrow an interpretation of mathematical thinking and too broad a view of problem solving. The purposes of this article are to describe one view of “mathematical thinking” and to describe the characteristics of a problem-solving program necessary to develop this kind of thinking.

This research aims to investigate, compare, and describe the achievement and enhancement of students' mathematical communication skills (MCS). It based on the prior mathematical knowledge (PMK) category (high, medium and low) by using Treffinger models (TM) and conventional learning (CL). This research is an experimental study with the population of all students of Mathematics Education Department who took Discrete Mathematics subject matter of one university in the city of Ternate. The results show that (1) the achievement and enhancement of MCS students that used TM are higher than the students learning using CL; (2) Based on the categories of PMK, the achievement and enhancement of MCS of students using TM are also higher than those learning with CL; and (3) There was no interaction effect between learning (TM and CL) and PMK to the achievement and enhancement of MCS of the students.Keyword: Communication Skills, Prior Mathematical Knowledge, Treffinger Model

Mathematical thinking and self-confidence are indispensable aspects of learning mathematics and are influential in solving mathematical problems. In higher education mathematics learning, advanced mathematical thinking skills are required (Advance Mathematical Thinking. Advanced mathematical thinking processes include: 1) mathematical representation, 2) mathematical abstraction, 3) connecting mathematical representation and abstraction, 4) creative thinking, and 5) mathematical proof. Discrete mathematics is one of the courses in mathematics education FKIP UNS. The problems in Discrete Mathematics courses are usually presented in the form of contextual problems. Students often experience difficulties in making mathematical expressions and mathematical abstractions from these contextual problems. In addition, students also experience difficulties in bookkeeping. Most students often prove by using examples of some real problems. Even though proof in mathematics can be obtained by deductive thinking processes or inductive thinking processes, the truth is that mathematics cannot only come from the general assumption of inductive thinking. Based on this, a qualitative descriptive study was carried out which aims to determine the advanced mathematical thinking skills based on the level of student self-confidence. Research with the research subjects of FKIP UNS Mathematics Education Students in Discrete Mathematics learning for the 2019/2020 school year gave general results that the student's ability in advanced mathematical thinking was strongly influenced by the level of student confidence in learning. The higher the student's self-confidence level, the better the student's advanced mathematical thinking ability, so that high self-confidence has a great chance of being successful in solving math problems.

The purpose of this study is to improve students’ creativity through problem solving learning. Students’ creativity is an important issue in Mathematics Economics class. Some of the problems that occur are (1) the lack of students in asking questions; (2) low idea of students; (3) lack of courage in expressing opinions; (4) lack of ability to solve difficult mathematical problems in class, and (5) ) lack of courage in defending his opinion when discussing. This research is a classroom action research on mathematics economics course in Mathematics Education Department, University of Muhammadiyah Purwokerto in 2018/2019 academic year. The research phase includes (1) planning, (2) implementing actions, (3) observation, and (4) reflection. The results of this study show good results, because of the 55 students, only 3 students who scored less in the category and the second cycle only 1 student who scored less. Therefore, it can be concluded that problem solving learning can enhance students’ creativity.

Research has shown that a better understanding of mathematics education in the K-12 classrooms with an emphasis on meeting the needs of students with mathematics difficulties in an inclusive setting is crucial. Unfortunately, there is limited literature available for teachers, parents, and educators to prepare them for teaching mathematics in an inclusion setting. This chapter provides an in-depth discussion on how students' understanding and mathematical thinking, reasoning, and sense directly correlate to achievement in mathematics courses, higher-level academic courses, and in-career opportunities. This chapter provides researchers, scholars, educators, parents, and students an invaluable resource and deeper insight for understanding how effective mathematics instruction can benefit all students in an inclusive classroom.

In the past thirty years a number of trends in mathematics curricula have been observed. We've seen new math, basic skills, problem solving, and, most recently, discrete mathematics. The aim here is to look more closely at discrete mathematics. It is being touted by its proponents as a much needed revolution in mathematics education. With this claim in mind it seems useful to consider simultaneously the last revolution in mathematics education the so-called new math looking for parallels and any possible lessons to be learned.
