The aim of the study is to broaden the definition of the added-value concept in agriculture and in rural areas. To start, reference was made to the location of this concept in relation to the economics of agriculture and then to the various processes that occur or should occur in rural areas creating or conditioning the expected positive effects, which were called the Value-added. Then, the creation of added value in the agricultural supply chain was analyzed with an old and new approach to its creation. The case analysis was conducted for the "Owoc Łącki" company, which assessed the ways of creating added value and the form of integration of fruit producers. The effect of the analysis is the multiplicity and diversity of defining and describing conditions for the creation of added value. The presented examples, practices and approaches in increasing the added value can be an inspiration for advisors, especially farmers looking for new business models, thus increasing their income.

On the basis of a literature review, the directions for transition of agriculture from the productive to the post-productive model are presented. A methodological framework has been developed, including the directions of the transition and the indicators on which it can be assessed. On the basis of this implementation, the passage from quantity to production quality, to the sustainability of agriculture, to new business models based on multifunctionality are assessed. It turns out that the changes in Bulgarian agriculture cannot be assessed unambiguously. The transition to sustainability is accompanied by continued mechanization and digitization of technological processes. There is a simultaneous development of both the productive and the post-productive model of agriculture. Together with the increasing interest in organic production, the implementation of environmentally friendly practices and the implementation of ecosystem services, modernization based on computerization and chemisation continues. The results are part of scientific project DN 15/8 2017 Sustainable multifunctional rural areas: reconsidering agricultural models and systems with increased demands and limited resources funded by the Bulgarian research fund.

As a result of the gas market liberalization, new business models are emerging and one that brings positive effects to market players is purchasing group functioning. This paper adopts the approach of gas market review and provides a synthesis of its functioning in Poland. The review focuses first on the frameworks of the process of gas market liberalization. Next, the author presents gas market structure and lists and comments on its components. Then, the main characteristics of the market are discussed. The author presents a case study of the Metropolitan Gas Purchasing Group—the largest gas purchasing group in Poland with the volume reaching almost 225 GWh of purchased gas. As a result, the author highlights the effects of this coopetitive strategy which reached a value of PLN 3,000,000.

Booksellers have always been vital to the publishing mix, making or breaking books’ success, but bookselling is now very much in transition. Coming from a stable system of wholesale and retail, we have seen the rise of chain bookstores, followed by the creation of the world’s largest and most powerful bookshop—Amazon.com. Entirely new business models for all book formats have emerged in the last decade, as well as new products and services consisting of books and related media. Bookselling remains in many countries a highly regulated business, but will see further change due to dependencies between the different book business models, technological innovation, the continuing competition with related industries, and a changing demographics of book buyers.

Abstract Information technology has massively transformed the world of business over the past fifty years - first individual functional areas within companies (“first wave”), later increasingly also cross-divisional value-added processes and trade (“second wave”). Those companies that recognized the tremendous economic potential of these upheavals and consistently adapted, profited enormously - many others, however, fell dramatically. At the same time, innovative startups emerged that successfully created and occupied new markets. With the Internet of Things (IoT), the third digital wave is currently rolling up. Their impact will be enormous - both for our everyday lives and for many industries that have so far been largely spared the disruptive power of digital transformation. Accordingly, the challenges facing most companies today are: understanding more complex competition, acquiring new digital technologies, making existing offerings smart, developing new services, networking production, efficiently analyzing vast amounts of data, and building viable organizations to push all this forward. The IoT is a driver for digitization. By analyzing machine data, the use of sensors and the intelligent real-time processing of huge amounts of data in the cloud, new business models are created. With the information gained, companies are able to improve their value chain. However, one of the most difficult issues in this context for many companies is how they can further develop their existing business model or establish successful new business models that will be based on new technologies and IoT. To investigate resulting impacts, we draw on the existing business models and deduct specifics for the Internet of Things. Building on this, in order to reach the aims of the paper the authors will use a descriptive research method and a case study in order to present how new business models work with the IoT.

ABSTRACT There is a huge opportunity to develop new business models for the mining industry. Exploration and discovery must be based on a model of cooperation and collaboration rather than competition. Innovation and the development of new technology must be based on what we need to do to transform the business for tomorrow, in addition to what we can do today. Accelerated learning based on business simulations offers an excellent new approach to discovering what needs to be changed, to developing new and creative approaches to actually change our cultures of practice, and to implementing those changes as rapidly as possible. Simply put: we have to change our mindset to change our mine set.

The objective of this paper is to outline the potential and outlooks of development of circular economy in Bulgaria, as well as demonstrate the need for adequate measures on part of public authorities to encourage this change. The research is based on a primary survey of Bulgarian employers’ attitudes towards pursuing a corporate policy relating to the principles of sustainable development, which was conducted among 400 enterprises. The analysis reveals untapped potential not only with regard to a more efficient use of resources, in both the private and public sectors, but also in terms of underestimating the significance of the issue. The firms could significantly reduce their costs, improve their compatibility and their export potential if they apply new business models and new innovative technologies, which are both resource-efficient and eco-friendly. The research and analytical methods used for the development of the paper involve graphical and table presentation of statistical and empirical data and survey of available legal and analytical research on the topic. The conclusions reached reveal a number of obstacles slowing down the transition to a real circular economy model.  That would require speeding up the reform in the eco-fiscal and innovative government policies.  The paper’s added value lies not only in the analytical examination of the issues, but above all in deriving recommendations for future actions.

This chapter introduces the notion of how old-economy brick-and-mortar firms are adapting their HRM policies and practices and the roles of their HR departments in light of newly introduced Web-based business-to-business transaction practices. It argues that the Internet has introduced three new business models in old-economy companies: the Internet as a marketplace, the Internet as a supply chain integrator, and the Internet as a catalyst for business model redefinition. These innovative ways of organizing are providing HR with opportunities to rise to new challenges and increase their added value to the firm.

Circular Economy (CE) is a new approach to sustainable development, which among other promotes sustainable development of new business models of waste streams management in energy sector. In the context of promotion CE solutions (in many strategies and documents of EU and Poland) aimed at efficient use of raw materials and reducing negative impact on the environment, it is necessary for coal based power plant to implement actions in this area. The aim of the article is to evaluate the technological and organizational solutions which make possible the move form linear management model to a circular one and to propose new solutions.
