Cirsium aduncum Fisch. & C.A.Mey. Ex DC. and C. haussknechtii Boiss., (Asteraceae) are important medicinal plant species that grow in different geographical regions of Iran. We had no knowledge about population genetic structure, intra-specific and inter-specific gene flow and the presence of hybrid zone for this two species in Iran. Therefore, in order to provide data for conservation of these two medicinally important species, the population genetic analysis and morphometric studies were performed in 18 geographical populations of these species. ANOVA and MDS analyses revealed significant morphological difference among the studied populations in either species, while MDS plot showed morphological overlap in plants of these two species. AMOVA test revealed significant genetic difference among the studied populations. Mantel test showed positive significant correlation between genetic and geographical distances and the occurrence of isolation by distance. Population assignment test and STRUCTURE plot of genetic data revealed inter-specific introgression between these species.

Helichrysum armenium and H. rubicundum are two medicinally important plants of Iran that are distributed in various regions of the country. They are extensively used by locals as medicinal plants and a great negative selection pressure is applied on them. Therefore, due to importance of these plant species, we performed a population genetic study in both species. For this study, we used 66 randomly collected plants from 24 geographical populations of Helichrysum armenium and H. rubicundu. These species had areas of overlap and contact and we found some intermediate plants that were included in our study too. UPGMA and MDS analyses revealed morphological separation of these closely related species and placed intermediate plants in an intermediate position. ISSR analysis revealed inter-population genetic diversity and K-Means clustering and STRUCTURE analyses revealed populations. Genetic stratification in both species. Genetic difference of the studied populations was not correlated to geographical distance. Triangle plot of Bayesian analysis and NeighborNet plot showed inter-specific gene flow. The studied populations showed plants with 2n = 2x = 14 and 2n = 4x = 28 chromosomes and differed significantly in their meiotic behavior. Therefore, a combination of genetic stratification, and genetic admixture as well as polyploidy and chromosomes structural changes, have played rule in Helichrysum diversification.

Rice (Oryza sativa L.), is a staple food and cash crop in many countries and studies on geneticstructure and differentiation patterns of rice land races along with the cultivated rice, provide important data for future rice breeding. Therefore, the aims of present investigation were 1-To study the genetic diversity present withinIranian rice genotypes, 2-To study genetic relatedness of these rice genotypes, and 3-To providebarcoding of the rice genotypes based on SSR molecular markers and produce data for rice varieties authentication. In total, 201 rice samples originated from 10 geographical regions of Iran were studied in this project. All rice samples underwent fragment analysis in every 64 SSR loci and different clustering and ordination methods performed. In general four major clusters were formed. Both landraces as well as rice cultivars were distributed in different clusters due to their genetic difference. STRUCTURE analysis of the studied genotypes followed by Evanno test produced the optimal number of genetic groups K = 2. The mean Nm = 13.6, for the studied genotypes indicates that a high degree of gene flow/ancestral common alleles are present in the rice genotypes studied. Mantel test indicated a significant positive association between genetic distance and geographic distance of the rice genotype studied and presence of an overall isolation by distance (IBD) model of differentiation across the geographical regions of Iran. Overall, the significant genetic difference observed between rice landraces and rice cultivars ofthe country may be used in future hybridization and breeding of rice in the country. The landracerice genotypes may contain useful genes to be transferred to the popular rice cultivars. Moreover, SSR loci that can differentiate rice genotypes are identified and can be used in rice cultivars authentication.

Ziziphora tenuior L. is a medicinal plant species of the genus Ziziphora (Labiatae) that grows in different areas of Iran. In order to study the population genetic structure in Ziziphora tenuior, we collected 107 plant specimens from 20 geographical populations that are located in 17 provinces. ISSR molecular markers were used for genetic diversity analysis. The populations studied revealed intra- and inter-population genetic variability. AMOVA test showed significant genetic difference among the studied populations. STRUCTURE plot identified two main gene pools for Ziziphora tenuior in Iran. These populations showed isolation by distance and restrict gene flow occurred among them.

Abstract NF-κB and IκB proteins have central roles in regulation of inflammation and innate immunity in mammals. Homologues of these proteins also play an important role in regulation of the Drosophila immune response. Here we present a molecular population genetic analysis of Relish, a Drosophila NF-κB/IκB protein, in Drosophila simulans and D. melanogaster. We find strong evidence for adaptive protein evolution in D. simulans, but not in D. melanogaster. The adaptive evolution appears to be restricted to the IκB domain. A possible explanation for these results is that Relish is a site of evolutionary conflict between flies and their microbial pathogens.

Rhodnius ecuadoriensis Lent & León (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) es el prinicipal vector de    la enfermedad de Chagas en Ecuador, donde la estructura genética de sus poblaciones es poco conocida. Nosotros probamos seis Repeticiones Cortas en Tamdem (RCT) de R. pallescens Barber en poblaciones selváticas y domésticas de R. ecuadoriensis. Dos microsatelites fueron monomórficos, dos dieron resultados ambiguos y dos fueron polimórficos (16 y 19 alelos) y fueron utilizados para análisis. Los resultados de las frecuencias alélicas, AMOVA y los pruebas Bayesianas para genética favorecen la teorí­a de la existencia de una sola población. Estos resultados preliminares sugieren que las poblaciones selváticas y domésticas d R. ecuadoriensis intercambian frecuentemente migrantes. Por consiguiente el control de la Enfermedad de Chagas requiere vigilancia entomológica continua en la costa del Ecuador.
