Background/Aim. In modern training technology, assessment of aerobic bioenergetic potential in athletes is commonly performed by standard laboratory procedures to determine basic or specific functional abilities for specific sport activity or discipline. The aim of study was to assess the aerobic bioenergetic potential of athletes participating in basketball, football and handball. Methods. The study included 87 athletes (29 basketball players, 29 football players, and 29 handball players) aged 21-24. Evaluation of the aerobic bioenergetic potential of athletes participating in basketball, football and handball was performed followed by both univariate (ANOVA) and multivariate (MANOVA) statistical methods to determine differences among the athletes in relative (VO2 mL/kg/min) and absolute oxygen consumption (VO2 L/min). Results. Statistically significant differences between absolute and relative oxygen consumption were found in basketball players (Mb), football players (Mf), and handball players (Mh) (MANOVA, p = 0.00). ANOVA also revealed significant differences in relative oxygen consumption (VO2 mL/kg/min) (p = 0.00). The football players (55.32 mL/kg/min) had the highest relative oxygen consumption, followed by the handball players (51.84 mL/kg/min) and basketball players (47.00 mL/kg/min). The highest absolute oxygen consumption was recorded in the basketball players (4.47 L/min), followed by the handball players (4.40 L/min) and footballers (4.16 L/min). Conclusion. Statistically significant differences in the aerobic bioenergetic potential, expressed by the relative oxygen consumption were found among atletes participating in different team sports. It can be assumed that the player from the sports in which it is necessary to cross greater distance in total during the match have a greater need for aerobic capacity.

The aim of this research is to determine the differences between the aerobic functional abilities of football players from different positions in the team, which should serve as a starting point in planning and monitoring the training process of football players. VO2max, as a basic parameter of functional abilities, was obtained by applying a laboratory progressive test on the treadmill. The sample of respondents was composed of 57 respondents (GOD = 22.47 ± 3.78SD), football players of clubs competing in the first and second leagues of Serbia from the area of Vojvodina, of which 8 goalkeepers, 16 defensive, 17 midfielders and 16 attackers. To test the functional capabilities (oxygen consumption - VOmax), we used a test of progressive continuous load on the treadmill with increasing load per minute through a "breath-by-breath" gas analyzer (Quark PFT ErgoCPET, Cosmed, Italy), which gave data on ventilation and spiroergometric parameters of the subjects by different positions in the team. Anthropometric measures of body weight- (TM) and body height- (TV) were applied to test the morphological characteristics of the subjects. SPSS 20.0 software package was used for data processing. In order to determine the statistically significant differences of the measured variables between football players by positions, a one-factor anova of different groups, the level of statistical significance (p <0.05) was used. The obtained results of maximum oxygen consumption indicated that there is a statistically significant difference in aerobic abilities between goalkeepers and players in other positions, and they are certainly a consequence of the physiological requirements placed before them and the different training process. The highest mean value of VO2 max had midfielders (53.3 ± 1.9 ml / kg / min), followed by attackers (52.9 ± 4.4 ml / kg / min), defensive players (51.8 ± 3, 3 ml / kg / min) while the lowest values were recorded in the goalkeeper (50.5 ± 1.8 ml / kg / min). There is a logical conclusion that the need for running midfielders is the greatest, and the goalkeeper the least, and that the results are the result of training processes and different requirements for individual positions in the team.

The production of manifold and rapidly varying movements in team sports requires maintaining an erect posture. This paper aimed to study dynamic postural stability in athletes engaged in team sports. Among the participants were high-level basketball players (n = 15), rugby players (n = 15) and football players (n = 12), as well as 30 young people not professionally involved in sports, all aged 18–21 years. Postural stability was evaluated using stability analyser Stabilan-01 (OKB Ritm, Taganrog). We utilized the Evolventa test, which simulates the real situation of tracking movements in the games, allowing us to quickly assess not only the quality of the athlete’s tracking movement, but also the reserves of maintaining the stability of erect posture. Classical and vector stabilographic characteristics of upright posture stability were analysed. To assess the quality of tracking, special game indicators were used. Athletes demonstrated a significant superiority in the accuracy of performing motor tasks and at the same time in maintaining postural stability over young men not playing sports (p ≤ 0.05). Noteworthy, basketball players had the highest tracking accuracy in the frontal and, especially, in the sagittal plane (p ≤ 0.05). Moreover, basketball players kept their balance much better, surpassing rugby players and, above all, football players in most indicators in both planes (p ≤ 0.05). Thus, the effectiveness, accuracy and speed of completing tasks, as well as fewer errors in high-level athletes were combined with an automated ability, due to the stereotype formed over many years of training, to confidently maintain an upright position even in the most difficult game situations. However, when analysing postural stability, one must take into account the specifics of the sports under study, where a wide variety of ball-handling techniques is combined with competitive activity of the hands or feet.

Research background and hypothesis. Replete schedule of competitions and intense training are features of contemporary team sports. Athletes, especially the most involved ones, may not have enough time to recover. As a consequence, aggregated fatigue can manifest in some undesirable form and affect athlete’s performance and health.Research aim. The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes in heart rate recovery (HRR) and investigate possible relations with sport-specifi c measures of effi cacy in professional basketball players during competition season.Research methods. Eight male high-level basketball players (mean ± SD, body mass, 97.3 ± 11.33 kg; height 2.02 ± 0.067 m, and age 23 ± 3.12 years) were investigated. The same basketball specifi c exercise was replicated several times from September till April during the practice sessions in order to assess the personal trends of HRR. Heart rate monitoring was performed using POLAR TEAM SYSTEM. Investigated athletes were ranked retrospectively according to the total amount of minutes played and the coeffi cients of effi cacy. Research results. There were signifi cant differences in the trends of HRR between the investigated players. The most effective players showed decreasing trends of HRR in all cases of ranking.Discussion and conclusions. Research fi ndings have shown that the quality of heart rate recovery differs between basketball players of the same team and could be associated with sport-specifi c effi cacy and competition playing time.Keywords: adaptation, autonomic control, monitoring training.

The aim of the present study was to assess the reasons and the pattern of alcohol consumption and the prevalence of alcohol related problems among professional soccer and basketball players. Psychometric instrument included Russian version of "AUDIT". The results demonstrated presence of significant alcoholization of sportsmen, which was reflected in the absence of responders abstaining from alcohol, preference for strong alcoholic beverages, high mean "AUDIT" score (7,4 ± 3,1) and alcohol consumption (401,7 ± 271,2 ml of ethanol per month). About one third of sportsmen consumed alcohol at dangerous level. The typical pattern of alcohol consumption was characterized by frequent intake of alcohol and consumption of 5 and more drinks on a typical day of drinking. About 93% of athletes experienced alcohol related problems.

Background: The first successful livebirth using warmed oocytes (vitrified by the GAVITM system) is reported in this paper. Embryologists throughout the world have vitrified oocytes using a manual technique which is susceptible to error and variation. In this era of automated laboratory procedures, vitrification was made semi-automatic by using the GAVITM system. Case Presentation: Donor oocytes were initially vitrified using the GAVITM system. They remained in the clinic’s oocyte bank until they were allocated to the patient. Donor oocytes were warmed as per Genea BIOMEDX protocol and inseminated to create embryos. Resulting embryos for the 42-year-old patient were cultured to the blastocyst stage, biopsied to perform PGT-A, using next generation sequencing and subsequently vitrified. The patient underwent a single euploid transfer in a frozen embryo transfer cycle which resulted in a healthy livebirth. Conclusion: The introduction of a semi-automated system should minimize the risk to the oocytes, standardize the procedure worldwide and potentially reduce the laboratory time taken by the embryologists. This case report demonstrates the safety of the technology used for vitrification, but larger randomized studies need to be performed to demonstrate the safety and efficacy of newer technologies like the GAVITM system before adopting it as a standard laboratory procedure.

Abstract Background Regular physical exercise causes a continuous gradual increase of the cardiac left ventricular (LV) mass known as physiological adaptive hypertrophy. The extent of LV remodeling depends on the type, amount, and intensity of the exercise. Purpose The aim of this study was to compare structural changes of the heart among Lithuanian football, basketball players and unathletic controls. Methods A total of 50 Lithuanian males aged between 20-29 years volunteered to participate in the study. Football players (n = 15) playing for local II league football clubs,and Basketball players (n = 15) playing for local minor league basketball teams. All athletes had been regularly engaged in their sport for at least three years. Inactive healthy volunteers (n = 20) of similar age served as controls. Routine transthoracic echocardiographic examinations to measure end-diastolic LV dimensions were performed by cardiology fellow under the supervision of a fully licensed cardiologist. Statistical analyses were performed using the SPSS 20.0 software. The value of p &lt; 0,05 was considered as statistically significant. Results No structural or functional pathologies were evident during the echocardiographic examination in any of the subjects. Absolute interventricular septum (IVS) thickness and LV posterior wall thickness, but not LV diameter, were higher in athletes than in inactive controls (P &lt; 0,001). Indexed LV diameter was higher in football players as compared with non-athlete controls and basketball players (P &lt; 0,05). Left ventricular mass of all athletes were higher as compared with controls (p &lt; 0.001). Relative wall thickness was not increased in football players but was higher in basketball players as compared with controls (p &lt; 0.05). Conclusion Cardiac remodeling in Lithuanian football players resulted in left ventricle eccentric hypertrophy due to the LV dilation, increased LV mass and relatively normal relative wall thickness. However in Lithuanian basketball players we noticed an increase in both relative wall thickness and LV mass resulting in LV concentric hypertrophy. Cognitive training is a broad term referring to a wide variety of psychological techniques that help individuals alter their own thoughts and perceptions. Biofeedback training allows individuals to become aware of typical patterns of physiological responding to environmental events. Two studies investigated whether a training program which combined these techniques would help athletes reduce competitive stress reactions and improve competitive performance. Studies of football players and basketball players found statistically significant differences (p < .05) between pre- and posttreatment comparisons of performance ratings. In the second study, a treatment group improved performance whereas a contact control group did not. Subjects in the treatment condition reported feeling more comfortable and confident in discussions subsequent to the training.
