Breeding bird populations were monitored at a windmill park on Båtskär in southern Åland archipelago 2006–2011. The area is in the outer archipelago and consists of four islands holding six windmills. The operation of windmills started during fall 2007. An environmental impact assessment for the area was done in 2002. The area holds 850–1050 pairs of breeding birds annually. Two species had significantly decreasing trends, namely herring gull Larus argentatus (annual decrease 6.9 pairs, p=0.003) and lesser black-backed gull Larus fuscus fuscus (annual decrease 2.8 pairs, p=0.004). The reason for the decline of the herring gull population is unlikely to be related to the windmill park. However, the close proximity of a windmill to the breeding colony of lesser black-backed gull has most likely contributed to their decline. Some species like swallow Hirundo rustica, house martin Delichon urbicum and auks Alcidae have benefitted of the construction of the windmill park and utilize new small environments created by the construction.

In June 2009 a census was conducted of colonial waterbirds breeding on Egg Island in western Lake Athabasca. This island supports the largest breeding colony of Caspian Terns (Hydroprogne caspia) in Alberta. California Gulls (Larus californicus) and Herring Gulls (Larus argentatus) also nest on the island. One hundred and one Caspian Tern nests (=pairs) were counted during 2009. Since 1990, the number of terns nesting on the island appears stable. However, more frequent surveys of waterbird populations are recommended, particularly in light of growing industrial activity in this region.

Population dynamics and life history traits of the ‘giant’ limpet Scutellastra laticostata on intertidal limestone platforms at Rottnest Island, Western Australia, were recorded by interannual (January/February) monitoring of limpet density and size structure, and relocation of marked individuals, at 3 locations over periods of 13-16 yr between 1993 and 2020. Limpet densities ranged from 4 to 9 ind. m-2 on wave-swept seaward margins of platforms at 2 locations and on a rocky notch at the landward margin of the platform at a third. Juvenile recruits (25-55 mm shell length) were present each year, usually at low densities (<1 m-2), but localized pulses of recruitment occurred in some years. Annual survival rates of marked limpets varied among sites and cohorts, ranging from 0.42 yr-1 at the notch to 0.79 and 0.87 yr-1 on the platforms. A mass mortality of limpets on the platforms occurred in 2003, likely mediated by thermal stress during daytime low tides, coincident with high air temperatures and calm seas. Juveniles grew rapidly to adult size within 2 yr. Asymptotic size (L∞, von Bertalanffy growth model) ranged from 89 to 97 mm, and maximum size from 100 to 113 mm, on platforms. Growth rate and maximum size were lower on the notch. Our empirical observations and simulation models suggest that these populations are relatively stable on a decadal time scale. The frequency and magnitude of recruitment pulses and high rate of adult survival provide considerable inertia, enabling persistence of these populations in the face of sporadic climatic extremes.

Introduction: The treatment of patients with malignant fibrous histiocytoma as well as other soft tissue sarcomas is not sufficiently effective up to date, and has largely changed and reflects the alterations, occurred in oncology as a whole. The number of amputation decreased over the last 10-15 years. Some researchers associate the improvement of treatment outcomes with the development of combined and complex methods. The aim of the study is an improvement of the results of treatment of patients with soft tissue malignant histiocytoma on the basis of determination of factors, influencing local recurrence development. Materials and methods: The basis of our study was a comprehensive analysis of examination and treatment results of 130 patients with MFH of the soft tissue of limbs, of them in 84 patients (64.6%) the recurrences developed. The group included 45 (53.6%) males and 39 (46.4%) females. The major part of patients – 82.1% (60 patients) were older than 40 years. Results and conclusions: The number of recurrences after the treatment in general surgical facilities is 86.9%, whereas in the patients after the treatment in the specialized oncological facilities this figure is twice lower (40%). The characteristic of the medical facility where the patient receives his/her primary treatment largely affects the development of local recurrences, patients’ quality of life and overall survival rates. The surgical method remains the leading modality in the treatment of MFH of ST. Wide and radical excision of tumors in the specialized oncological facilities allows achieving better survival outcomes of the patients.

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), an aggressive malignancy, is typically diagnosed at an advanced stage. It is associated with dismal 5-year postoperative survival rates, generating an urgent need for prognostic and diagnostic biomarkers. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of non-coding RNAs that are associated with cancer regulation, including modulation of cell cycle progression, apoptosis, metastasis, angiogenesis, autophagy, therapy resistance, and epithelial–mesenchymal transition. Several miRNAs have been found to be dysregulated in CCA and are associated with CCA-related risk factors. Accumulating studies have indicated that the expression of altered miRNAs could act as oncogenic or suppressor miRNAs in the development and progression of CCA and contribute to clinical diagnosis and prognosis prediction as potential biomarkers. Furthermore, miRNAs and their target genes also contribute to targeted therapy development and aid in the determination of drug resistance mechanisms. This review aims to summarize the roles of miRNAs in the pathogenesis of CCA, their potential use as biomarkers of diagnosis and prognosis, and their utilization as novel therapeutic targets in CCA.

AbstractClimate change in the Arctic is leading to earlier summers, creating a phenological mismatch between the hatching of insectivorous birds and the availability of their invertebrate prey. While phenological mismatch would presumably lower the survival of chicks, climate change is also leading to longer, warmer summers that may increase the annual productivity of birds by allowing adults to lay nests over a longer period of time, replace more nests that fail, and provide physiological relief to chicks (i.e., warmer temperatures that reduce thermoregulatory costs). However, there is little information on how these competing ecological processes will ultimately impact the demography of bird populations. In 2008 and 2009, we investigated the survival of chicks from initial and experimentally-induced replacement nests of arcticola Dunlin (Calidris alpina) breeding near Utqiaġvik, Alaska. We monitored survival of 66 broods from 41 initial and 25 replacement nests. Based on the average hatch date of each group, chick survival (up to age 15 days) from replacement nests (Ŝi = 0.10; 95% CI = 0.02–0.22) was substantially lower than initial nests (Ŝi = 0.67; 95% CI = 0.48–0.81). Daily survival rates were greater for older chicks, chicks from earlier-laid clutches, and during periods of greater invertebrate availability. As temperature was less important to daily survival rates of shorebird chicks than invertebrate availability, our results indicate that any physiological relief experienced by chicks will likely be overshadowed by the need for adequate food. Furthermore, the processes creating a phenological mismatch between hatching of shorebird young and invertebrate emergence ensures that warmer, longer breeding seasons will not translate into abundant food throughout the longer summers. Thus, despite having a greater opportunity to nest later (and potentially replace nests), young from these late-hatching broods will likely not have sufficient food to survive. Collectively, these results indicate that warmer, longer summers in the Arctic are unlikely to increase annual recruitment rates, and thus unable to compensate for low adult survival, which is typically limited by factors away from the Arctic-breeding grounds.
