This chapter explores the clandestine sex work that occurred in dance halls which were also referred to as “the child of Europeanization.” Whereas sex work in ả Đào singing houses was marketed to men who sought comfort in traditional culture, the sex work that occurred in dance halls appealed to men excited — even titillated — by modernization and Western culture. As their success derived from both an image of urban sophistication and a mostly peasant workforce, dance halls exemplified the urban–rural divide in colonial Tonkin. The growing economic disparity and cultural differences between urban and rural areas in the late colonial period gave rise to the all the elements necessary for selling unregistered sex work in dance halls.

Humans basically cannot break away from the past which gave birth to the thoughts and values.  These thoughts and values passed down continuously without any or with very little change that they become the customs and  culture of the people.  This kind of understanding is called traditionalism. It is assumed that traditionalism also exists in architecture as a product of human culture.  Gorontalo as a rapid growing city during the Dutch colonial period kept a number of buildings from that era. The Dutch colonial buildings are results of Dutch culture either in their pure form or those that have been combined with traditional culture and the condition of the surrounding environment. The results showed that traditionalism in Dutch colonial architecture has an influence in the city of Gorontalo.  These influences can be found in terms of the design of the floor plan, the shape of the building, the shape of the roof, the shape of the openings and the use of ornaments in buildings.

Moral Education is provided by major institutions within the civil society.  The social institutions include the family, religious bodies, the mass media and the school.  This paper examined the nature of Moral Education that has been provided in the Ghanaian basic schools  during the pre-colonial period (1820 up to 1850), the colonial period (1851-1956) and the post-colonial period (1957-2017).  A theoretical framework was provided for the study based on three approaches to moral education, namely: Indoctrinative approach, Romanticist approach and Cognitive-Structural approach. A content analysis of educational policy documents and interviews were used for the collection of data.  The findings of the research revealed that one of the colonial policies that promoted Moral Education in Ghana was the teaching of morality in public schools based on Christianity, using the Indoctrinative approach. However, this religious approach to morality changed to secular approach during the post-colonial period in Ghana, due to the pluralistic nature of the Ghanaian society.  This led to the introduction of “Moral Teaching”, “Civics” and later “Citizenship Education”.  The study welcomed the current policy of separating Religious Education from Moral Education by introducing the teaching of “Civic and Moral Education” and “Religious Studies” at the Colleges of Education, as proposed by the National Council for Tertiary Education.  It finally recommended that the Department of Arts Education of the University of Cape Coast began to train teachers who will teach these two courses at the Colleges of Education level. This will equip the teacher trainees with the pedagogical knowledge and skills required for the effective implementation of this new Moral Education programme in Ghanaian basic schools.

The concept of citizenship was introduced to the Arab and Islamic region duringthe colonial period. The law of citizenship, like all other laws and regulations inthe Middle East, was influenced by the colonial legacy that impacted the tribal and paternalistic systems in all aspects of life. In addition to the colonial legacy, most constitutions in the Middle East draw on the Islamic shari’a (law) as a major source of legislation, which in turn enhances the paternalistic system in the social sector in all its dimensions, as manifested in many individual laws and the legislative processes with respect to family status issues. Family is considered the nucleus of society in most Middle Eastern countries, and this is specifically reflected in the personal status codes. In the name of this legal principle, women’s submission is being entrenched, along with censorship over her body, control of her reproductive role, sexual life, and fertility.
