In making some researches into the migrations of the Norsemen in early times, I have been much struck with the apparent absence in the ordinary sources of information of anything which could resuscitate for us a picture of the condition of things in North Britain at the beginning of the ninth century, when the isles and coasts of Scotland were so terribly harried by the pirates. Recently the profound researches of Dr. Reeves and Mr. Skene, both of them worthy to rank among the greatest names in our historic literature, have accumulated a great mass of material, from which, and from other sources, it is possible to clothe with interest the somewhat dry bones of the early annalists, and I have thought that a careful survey of this seldom trodden field would be acceptable to the Fellows of the Royal Historical Society, and if they deem it worthy I hope to give in a second paper a similar picture of the Irish religious foundations, whose wealth and insecurity were the chief temptations to the rovers and buccaneers of the ninth century. In this paper I have gathered to a focus the information I have been able to meet with about the condition and surroundings of the Columban clergy, and described the doings of the pirates from the year 793, which I believe was the first occasion when they molested our shores, to the year 806, when “the family” or brotherhood of Iona, the mother monastery of the order, was burnt, and its inmates massacred and scattered.

In the course of extensive researches in which I have been engaged for some years on the subject of the history of the Rumbold family during the seventeenth century, and more especially at the period immediately preceding the Restoration, I came across a paper in the British Museum which has never, as far as I know, been made public, and is, perhaps, not unworthy to find a place among the Transactions of the Royal Historical Society. The curious document in question is headed A Particular of the Services performed by me Henry Rumbold for His Majesty.

Background: Children of parents with mental illness are not routinely included in psychoeducational and supportive family interventions provided by adult mental health systems. The family, therefore, is an important and, sometimes, the only source of information and support for them. Aim: To understand the experiences of well parents in talking to their children about parental mental illness. Method: This article presents the findings of a qualitative study of the experiences of well parents in talking to their children about parental mental illness. Ten well parents whose spouses were diagnosed with a severe mental illness participated in the study. Socio-demographic information, family details and history of the spouse’s mental illness along with their experiences of talking to children about parental mental illness, the perceived risks and benefits, challenges they faced and the role of others in the process were recorded. Qualitative data were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Findings: The themes of ‘distancing children from parental mental illness’, ‘avoiding conversations about the illness’, ‘giving and receiving emotional support’, ‘providing explanations of the illness’ and ‘regulating other sources of information’ show the complex ways in which well parents influence their children’s understanding of parental mental illness. The findings are examined in the background of what is known about this topic from the perspective of children or of the parent with illness. Possible ways to support well parents in families affected by parental mental illness are discussed. Conclusion: This study is a step forward in the understanding of how families talk to children about parental mental illness and provides the perspective of the well parent.

Objetivo: Revisar los aspectos epidemiológicos relevantes de investigaciones nacionales sobre consumo de heroína y cocaína en las dos últimas décadas, haciendo énfasis en la frontera norte de México. Material y Método: Se realizó una consulta automatizada, previo diseño teórico de búsqueda bibliográfica de trabajos sobre el tema. Se encontraron 72 materiales y tras una cuidadosa selección, quedaron 59, recuperando 83% de ellos. Para su análisis se diseñó una matriz de variables cualitativas y cuantitativas y se procesó en Excel para Windows 2000. Resultados: Sin ser un fenómeno reciente, el consumo de heroína esta alcanzando en últimas fechas proporciones considerables y diversas fuentes de información marcan esta tendencia, sobre todo en el norte del país. Asimismo el consumo de cocaína es cada vez mayor y se extiende por todo el territorio nacional en proporciones cada vez mayores según lo muestran diferentes indicadores. Comentarios: El panorama epidemiológico del consumo de heroína y cocaína es alarmante por sus repercusiones en lo individual, familiar y social y representa un reto principalmente para la planificación y funcionamiento de los servicios de salud en México. AbstractObjective: To review the relevant epidemiological aspects of national research regarding consumption of heroin and cocaine over the last two decades, with emphasis on the northern border of Mexico. Materials and Method: An automated consultation was carried out after the theoretical design of a bibliographic search for works related to the subject. 72 papers were found of which 59 were chosen after a careful revision representing 83%. For the analysis a matrix of qualitative and quantitative variables was designed and processed with Excel, Windows 2000. Results: Although the consumption of heroin is not a recent phenomenon, over the last few years it has reached such high proportions, especially in the north of the country, as many different sources of information indicate. Likewise, the consumption of cocaine is ever-growing and spreading throughout the country the same proportions, as show by several indicators. Observations: The consumption prevalence of both heroin and cocaine is alarming because its tremendous impact on the individual, the family and the society and it represents a challenge for the Mexican Health Services, particularly in planning and management.

The use of several sources of information (parents and children) is scarce in family studies. Child-to-parent violence (CPV) is still considered the most hidden and stigmatized form of family violence. One objective of this study was to analyze the prevalence of child-to-parent violence and perceptions of family environment as a function of the informant (parent or child), child’s sex, and parents’ sex in a community population. The study also aimed to analyze the predictive power of family conflict and aggressive family discipline in child-to-parent violence depending on the informant. A sample of 586 adolescents (49% boys, aged between 12 and 18) and their parents (40%) participated in the study. The Family Environment Scale and the Conflict Tactics Scales were administered. Results showed good consistency between adolescent reports and parent reports for physical CPV, but adolescents perceived worse family environments than their parents. Multiple regression models revealed that aggressive family discipline and family are important risk factors for CPV. Early intervention to prevent CPV is recommended, focused on promoting family relationships and avoiding harsh discipline practices. It is important that parents are able to ask for help when they need it.

Abstract  Inclusion of the family members in eating disorders (ED) treatment is a key recommendation of clinical practice guidelines for adolescents. The aim of this study was to observe and analyze roles, interaction patterns, and emotional response styles of family and patients, as well as the features of a menu brought to a family meal session (FMS). A total of 13 patient’s families from the intensive outpatient program for ED participated, patients aged among 12-29 years. Two therapists filled out a family meal observation matrix and took field notes. To improve validity, data triangulation strategies were used, including different sources of information (individual and group sessions contents) and triangulation of techniques (observation in vivo of FMS and a subsequent session with participants was carried out). The analysis of thematic contents revealed that regardless the type of ED and age of the patient the presence of avoidant behaviors in relatives and to a lesser extent, and especially in parents, aggressive, challenging or threatening patterns. However, the discrepancy between the behavior observed in the FMS and the one reported by the patients and their therapists was evident. In general, was observed that behavioral patterns may contribute to the maintenance of the disease. Resumen  Involucrar a la familia en el tratamiento de los trastornos del comportamiento alimentario (TCA) es una recomendación clave de las guías de práctica clínica para adolescentes. El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar los patrones de interacción y roles familiares, sus estilos de respuesta emocional y las características del menú traído a una sesión de comida terapéutica familiar (CTF). Participaron las familias de 13 pacientes con TCA, de entre 12 y 29 años de edad, asistentes a un programa ambulatorio intensivo. Dos terapeutas llenaron de manera independiente una matriz de observación de la sesión de CTF e hicieron anotaciones de campo; además fueron utilizadas estrategias de triangulación de datos, considerando diferentes fuentes (contenidos de las sesiones individuales y grupales) y técnicas (observación en vivo y entrevista familiar). El análisis realizado reveló, independientemente del tipo de TCA o de la edad de las pacientes, la predominancia de comportamientos evitativos en las familias; en menor medida, y principalmente en los padres, los patrones agresivos, retadores o de amenaza también estuvieron presentes. No obstante, resultó evidente la discordancia entre el comportamiento observado en la CTF vs. el reportado por las pacientes y sus terapeutas. En general, estuvieron ampliamente presentes patrones comportamentales que pueden contribuir al mantenimiento de la enfermedad.

Alberic of Trois-Fontaines was a thirteenth-century Cistercian and a well-read chronicler. He wrote about the happenings taking place in Europe, from Ruś to Wales. Among many subjects, he was especially keen on finding out the origins of the families and the genealogical relations. He not only summarised chronicles but undertook independent research on the topic of genealogies of rulers and nobles. The extent of his writing on this subject shows that it was one of his main interests. While his knowledge about the family connections was sometimes appreciated, it was also perceived as full of mistakes. There was almost no discussion about the meaning of the various genealogies presented by Alberic. This is regrettable, as Alberic expresses a very interesting idea in the text: the common ancestry for the whole European nobility. In the article I point out Alberic’s probable sources of information, the role genealogical matter had in the chronicle. Finally I discuss the inspirations for the special treating of genealogy in the chronicle pointing at Peter of Poitiers’ example.
