We examine the proposition that the expected value of future interest tax shields affects firms' preferences for long-term vs. short-term debt. We extend prior work that has focused on incremental debt issuances (Newberry and Novack 1999; Guedes and Opler 1996) by examining the maturity structure reflected in the portfolio of firms' outstanding debt at year-end. Thus, our study tests a wider range of capital structure activities and includes a much larger sample of firms than examined in prior studies. Our results indicate that firms with high marginal tax rates use more long-term debt than do firms with low marginal tax rates. These findings are consistent with the existence of tax clienteles for financing with debt of different maturities.

<p>Our paper examines what impact capital structure has on firms’ performance in selected firms listed on HCMC Stock Exchange. The data is collected from 147 listed companies during the period from 2006 to 2014. The study not only checks the impact the level of leverage has on firms’ performance, which is found to be negative in this study, but it also uses the short-term and long-term debt ratios to see the effect of debt maturity. However, there is no difference whether it is short-term or long-term. Tangibility is found to be negative with a very high proportion on average. With the suggestion that companies might invest too much in fixed assets and there is a lack of efficiency, this could be the alert for firms to improve their management process. Size and growth are found to be positive, since larger firms have lower costs of bankruptcy and higher growth rates associate with higher performance. Moreover, the study also adds the effects of industry and macroeconomics, and the result shows a correlation between the two factors and firms’ performance.</p>

This paper manipulate the effect of capital structure maturity on firm performance. Debt maturity is measured by three ratios (the long term capital structure, the short term capital structure and total debt ratio). We test a sample consisting of 116 firms from Malaysia and 92 firms from Mexico over a period of 7 years from 2005 to 2011. We could not find evidence on the effect of the long term debt ratio on firm performance. However, firms with higher short term capital structure ratio, are less profitable. This result is valid for firms from Malaysia and Mexico. The results of total debt ratio rare mixed. We conclude to a positive effect for firms of Malaysia and a negative effect for firms of Mexico.

This paper focuses on an important issue, which has generally received less attention in SMEs literature, being the effect of debt maturity structure on financial performance. The random effects model, as a panel data technique, is used to examine the relationship between debt and various measures of financial performance. The results reveal that it is not the level of leverage that determines financial performance, but rather the debt maturity structure. Specifically, the findings demonstrate that short-term debt and long-term debt have an opposite effect on financial performance and therefore tend to cancel out. This is the first study, to the best of knowledge, which offers empirical evidence regarding debt maturity structure not only in SMEs context, but also from an Egyptian perspective.

AbstractThis study examines how the institutional environment influences capital structure and debt maturity choices of firms in 39 developed and developing countries. We find that a country’s legal and tax system, corruption, and the preferences of capital suppliers explain a significant portion of the variation in leverage and debt maturity ratios. Specifically, firms in more corrupt countries and those with weaker laws tend to use more debt, especially short-term debt; explicit bankruptcy codes and deposit insurance are associated with higher leverage and more long-term debt. More debt is used in countries where there is a greater tax gain from leverage.

Abstract This paper shows that short debt maturities commit equityholders to leverage reductions when refinancing expiring debt in low-profitability states. However, shorter maturities lead to higher transaction costs since larger amounts of expiring debt need to be refinanced. We show that this trade-off between higher expected transaction costs against the commitment to reduce leverage in low-profitability states motivates an optimal maturity structure of corporate debt. Since firms with high costs of financial distress and risky cash flows benefit most from committing to leverage reductions, they have a stronger motive to issue short-term debt. Evidence supports the model’s predictions.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate how firms’ relationships with employees define their debt maturity. The authors empirically test the role of employee litigations in influencing firms’ choice of short-term versus long-term debt. The authors study employee relations by analyzing the importance of the workplace environment on capital structure. Design/methodology/approach The author’s test hypotheses using a sample of US publicly traded firms between 2000 and 2017, including 3,056 unique firms with 4,256 unique chief executive officer, adopting the fixed effect panel model. Findings The authors document that employee litigations have a significant negative effect on the use of short-term debt and a significant positive affect on long-term debt. Employee litigations, along with legal fees, outcomes and charging parties, matter the most in explaining debt maturity. In addition, frequently sued firms abandon the short-term debt market and use less shareholders’ equity to finance their operations while relying more on the longer debt market. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to examine the role of employee mistreatment in debt maturity choice. The study extends the lawsuit and finance literature by examining unique, hand-collected data sets of employee lawsuits, allegations, violations, settlements, charging parties, case outcomes and case durations.

The South African retail sector continues to experience a decline in sales and returns amidst growing external competition and a drop in consumer confidence stemming from the recent credit downgrades in the country. Yet, firms in this sector appear to maintain high debt to equity levels. This study investigated whether the capital structure practices of these firms influence their profitability. A Panel data methodology, using three regression estimators, is applied to a balanced sample of 16 retail firms listed on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE) during the period 2008-2016. The analysis estimates functions relating capital structure composition with the return on assets (ROA). Results reveal a statistically significant but negative relationship between all measures of debt (short-term, long-term, total debt) with profitability, suggesting a possible inclination towards the pecking order theory of financing behaviour, for listed retail firms. Additionally, retail firms are highly leveraged yet over 75% of this debt is short-term in nature. Policy interventions need to investigate the current restrictions on long-term debt financing which offers longerterm and affordable financing, to boost returns. While this study’s methodology differs slightly from earlier studies, it incorporates vital aspects from these studies, and simultaneously specifies a possible model fit.  This helps to capture unique but salient characteristics like the transitional effects of debt financing on firm profitability.  It therefore delivers some unique findings on the financing behaviour of retail firms that both in form policy change, while stimulating further research on the phenomenon.

This paper examines the relationship between capital structure and performance of firms. The study is confined to plantation sector companies in Malaysia and is based on a sample of 39 firms which listed in Bursa Malaysia for the period from 2009 to 2019. This study uses two performance measures which are ROA and ROE as the dependent variable. Besides, the capital structure measures are the short-term debt, long-term debt, total debt and firm growth, which as the independent variables. Size will be the control variable in this study. Moreover, a fixed-effect panel regression analysis has been used to analyse the impact of capital structure on firm performance. The results indicate that firm performance, which is in term of ROA, have an insignificant relationship with short-term debt (STD) and long-term debt (LTD). For the total debt (TD) and growth, there is a significant relationship with ROA. However, for the performance measured by ROE, it has an insignificant relationship with short-term debt (STD), long-term debt (LTD) and total debt (TD). Furthermore, there is a significant relationship between the growth and the performance firms from plantation sector in Malaysia.

The study aims at empirically proving and analyzing the balance model of Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM with the multifactor of risks, consisting of: outstanding stocks value, capital structure represented by Debt EquiQ Ratio (DER), market risk as represented by stock market beta, and the interest rate on company return on stock.This research uses a dynamic model approach considering the existence of the weaknessesin a classic linear model. Since the investment is related to investors behavior that need a lag to market change, the use of the dynamic model approach will be better. It is because the dynamic model uses autoregressive approach containing the lag. The dynamic model used here is Partial Adjustment Model (PAM) and Error Correction Model (ECM).  Based on the estimation of the PAM model it is proven that the model is inefficient in finding the evidence confirming the hypothesis. Subsequently,based on the result of the examination of the ECM model it isconcluded that outstanding stocks value has a positive and signiJicant impact in short term and a negative impact in long term. It means that in the short term outstanding stocks value serves as the consideration for investors in making an investment. However in the long term they are likely to believe that the use of smaller internal capital proportion will be more beneficial for them. The capital structure has only a longierm impact on the return on stock. It means that the impact of DER on stock return on miscellaneous industry sector needs the quite long lag to influence the investors in determining stocks return. It indicates that in the long term they believ:e that the use of increasing number of loan will causes the decrease in company liquidity. Consequently, the opportunity for the company to go bankrupt is bigger Beta stock in the study has a negative impact in the long term. Public utilities can claim a partial dividends-paid deduction on “old money” preferred stock (OMPS) but the 42 percent dividends-received deduction (DRD) allowed to corporate investors is lower than the 70 percent DRD allowed on other types of preferred stock. This study provides evidence that the implicit tax borne by OMPS is lower than that of other preferred stock and that the estimated implicit tax associated with the 70 percent DRD is much higher than prior research suggests. Evidence is also presented indicating that marginal investors in OMPS are corporations with marginal tax rates between 26.3 percent and 27.2 percent. Finally, this study provides evidence that public utilities use OMPS financing in addition to, rather than as a substitute for, other types of preferred stock. This result suggests that tax considerations influence public utility managers' capital structure decisions even though tax savings flow through to ratepayers in the rate-making process.
