The impact of the Helmholtz-Kohlrausch effect on the appearance of near-white paper colours

This paper investigates the impact of the Helmholtz-Kohlrausch effect on near-white substrate colours. As the luminance of the test colour (or its simulated reflectance in a softproof setup) approaches that of the adapting white point the viewing mode changes from 'surface mode' to 'aperture mode', and the appearance of the test colour becomes self-luminous. However, some substrates with optical brighteners fall close to this threshold between viewing modes, since the OBAs not only increase the perceived reflectance but also increase the H-K effect, where it is very prominent in bluish colours. For graphic arts content shown on a display system, this essentially breaks the soft-proofing paradigm. The practical application of this work relates to cross-media colour reproduction, where the lightness appearance of some substrates is not adequately described by their colorimetric values, and this may impact on choice of proofing strategies.

В статье представлена работа В.А. Фаворского над киргизским героическим эпосом Манас. В серии созданных художником рисунков нашли проявление его художественные и теоретические подходы к искусству графики и иллюстрирования книг. Для более глубокого проникновения в суть эпического произведения художник отправляется в Киргизию. Созданные им рисунки имеют не только эстетическую и этнографическую ценности. В них проявилась его теория графики, когда белый фон бумаги воспринимается в качестве белого пространства, а карандаш художника становится сродни резцу скульптора. Пространство белого повисает на штрихах рисунка. Эпический характер повествования привел к монументальности образов и композиций иллюстраций. В статье приводятся теоретические мысли художника о соединении разновременных состояний в произведении искусства, роли контура и пятна. The work of V.A. Favorsky on the Kirghiz heroic epos is presented in this article. There is a demonstration of his artistic and theoretical approaches to the graphic arts and books illustration in the series of these drawings. The artist goes to Kyrgyzstan for the deep insight into the essence of the epic work. His drawings have not only aesthetic and ethnographic value. His theory of graphic appeared there, when a white field of paper is taken as a white space, and the artists pencil became similar to a cutter of a sculpture. The space of the white paper hangs on the drawings strokes. The epic nature of the narrative led to the monumentality of the images and compositions of the illustrations. There are artists theoretical thoughts about the connection of the multitemporal conditions in the works of art, the role of contour and spot.

This study aims to identify the extent of the response of operating banks in Jordan to the anti-money laundering and terrorism financing instructions set by the Central Bank of Jordan, and to enumerate the effectiveness of these sets of laws, the echelon of cooperation with the relevant government agencies and the impact of contiguous political and security conditions on the anti-money laundering and financing of terrorism. To attain the objectives of this study and to test its hypotheses, a descriptive analytical method was followed based on related data of the Central Bank instructions and the engaged procedures by operating banks to combat money laundering and financing of terrorism. Therefore, a questionnaire was designed and distributed to the managers of anti-money laundering departments in operating banks in Jordan. The study shows various outcomes, the most important is the high responding of operating banks in Jordan to the instructions of the anti-money laundering and terrorism financing issued by the Central Bank of Jordan. The existence of practical application of money laundering and terrorism financing instructions fights against money laundering and terrorism financing in banks in Jordan at a soaring level. In addition to the functional cooperation by the competent governmental authorities in the fight against money laundering and terrorism financing, this study introduces a set of recommendations to reinforce the cooperation level for every related party to achieve a high level of cooperation in the field of the anti-money laundering and financing terrorism.

Purpose Advances in digital design tools enable exploration and generation of dynamic building facades. However, some processes are formally prescribed and manually driven to only visualize the design concepts. The purpose of this paper is to present a proactive framework for integrating parametric design thinking, paying particular attention to building facade patterning. Design/methodology/approach This work developed the PatternGen© add-on in Autodesk® Revit which utilizes an analytical image data (AID) overlay approach as a data source to dynamically pattern the building facade. The add-on was used to manipulate the placement rules of curtain panels on facade surface geometry. As means of validating this research model, a real-life design project has been chosen to illustrate the practical application of this approach. Feedback and observations from a short end-user questionnaire assessed qualitatively the facade patterning and panelization approach. Findings The proposed merge (or overlay) of AID images can be used as a parametric thinking method rather than just theory to generate and articulate dynamic facade design. The facade panelization responds to an AID that resembles design-performance data (e.g. solar exposure, interior privacy importance and aesthetics). Originality/value This work identifies a form of parametric thinking defined as the expression of geometrical relationships and its configuration dependent on the AID pixel Red Green Blue color source values. In this type of thinking, it explores the impact of the digital process and parametric thinking utility when driven by an AID overlay. The framework highlighted the practical application of AID pixel approach within a digital process to benefit both designers and computational tools developer on emerging design innovations.

INTRODUCTION:In Europe, the work done by the European Commission and the European Network for Health Technology Assessment (EUnetHTA) has consolidated the role of Health Technology Assessment (HTA), and promises to better harmonize its impact across European Union (EU) countries. However, more work is needed to improve patient involvement in assessing new health technology, and in developing research priorities.METHODS:The European Cancer Patient Coalition (ECPC) developed a model for engagement of patients in HTA based on the experience from: •ECPC's ‘Value of Innovation in Oncology’ White Paper, which includes input from ECPC's membership•ECPC's leading role in the Patient Preferences in Benefit-Risk Assessments during the Drug Life Cycle (PREFER) study, funded by the Innovative Medicines Initiative, to develop guidelines on how patient-preference studies should be performed throughout the development of new medical treatments.RESULTS:The ECPC ‘Value of Innovation in Oncology’ White Paper was launched in 2017. The paper provides ECPC's policy position on key obstacles to equitable access to meaningful innovation. The paper recommends the establishment of an EU-wide HTA body to reduce delays and variations in access and to avoid duplication of effort by individual Member States. The paper also recommends that patients should be formally and routinely included in HTA policy and operations at EU and at national levels. These recommendations were also submitted to the European Commission's public consultation on strengthening EU cooperation on HTA.Through its work in PREFER, ECPC is helping to improve how patient preferences are measured and valued to capture the impact of health technology on patients daily life. Patient preferences are concerned with measuring how patients value components such as treatment end points, route of administration, treatment duration, treatment frequency, frequency of side-effects, price, and quality of life.CONCLUSIONS:Patient organization involvement in HTA is vital. Patient organizations offer unique insights, experiences, identify unmet needs, and can help to produce practical recommendations

PurposeIn the age of digital media, customers have access to vast digital information sources, within and outside a company's direct control. Yet managers lack a metric to capture customers' cross-media exposure and its ramifications for individual customer journeys. To solve this issue, this article introduces media entropy as a new metric for assessing cross-media exposure on the individual customer level and illustrates its effect on consumers' purchase decisions.Design/methodology/approachBuilding on information and signalling theory, this study proposes the entropy of company-controlled and peer-driven media sources as a measure of cross-media exposure. A probit model analyses individual-level customer journey data across more than 25,000 digital and traditional media touchpoints.FindingsCross-media exposure, measured as the entropy of information sources in a customer journey, drives purchase decisions. The positive effect is particularly pronounced for (1) digital (online) versus traditional (offline) media environments, (2) customers who currently do not own the brand and (3) brands that customers perceive as weak.Practical implicationsThe proposed metric of cross-media exposure can help managers understand customers' information structures in pre-purchase phases. Assessing the consequences of customers' cross-media exposure is especially relevant for service companies that seek to support customers' information search efforts. Marketing agencies, consultancies and platform providers also need actionable customer journey metrics, particularly in early stages of the journey.Originality/valueService managers and marketers can integrate the media entropy metric into their marketing dashboards and use it to steer their investments in different media types. Researchers can include the metric in empirical models to explore customers' omni-channel journeys.

Teleroboticists have long argued that improved control and display performance would enhance telepresence and, thereby, telemanipulator performance. This study measured the impact of the DTI autostereo visual display system upon telemanipulation capacity, operator perceptions of system controllability, and perceived fatigue and discomfort, when faced with a wide range of movement amplitudes and end point accuracy in low and moderate variations in illumination levels. With introduction of stereovision, remote manipulation performance materially improved. Improvements were found only in the positioning phases of manipulations; not in rapid ballistic move elements. Improvements were found regardless of the level of illumination present at the remote work site in this study.

Within the previous few years major advances in the development of nanotechnologies and practical application of artificial nanoparticles (NPs) and nanomaterials (NMs) have resulted. As society becomes further aware that the use of nanomaterials is ever growing in consumer products and their presence in the environment, critical interest on the impact of this emerging technology has grown. A major concern is whether the unknown risks of engineered nanoparticles, in particular, their impact on health and environment, outweighs their established benefits to society. The goal is to evaluate their potential toxicity in the environment. Silver nanoparticles exhibit an important effect on microbial processes in environmental exposures. This study provides a brief review over the current state-of-knowledge about AgNPs from various studies in this area, including the history, analysis, source, transport, fate, and potential risks of AgNPs. In order to fully investigate the transport and fate of AgNPs in the environment, appropriate methods for the pre-concentration, separation, and speciation of AgNPs should be developed, and analytical tools for the characterization and detection of AgNPs in complicated environmental studies must be incorporated.

Abstract: Ambulatory oxygen therapy is sometimes needed when transferring inpatients. The prescribed administration rate must be maintained during the entire transit time. This implies that paramedical staff calculates the volume of gas remaining in the cylinder, based on the residual pressure displayed on the oxygen cylinders. This step carries a risk of errors and wastage. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of a digital autonomy display system on the use of oxygen cylinders at the hospital.: Two B5 oxygen cylinders (Air Liquide Santé France) were compared: Presence™ (regular manometer) and Takeo™ (digital display). This study was carried out in two wards; Presence™ cylinders were supplied for two months, and then Takeo™ cylinders for the next two months. For each period, we measured the turnover rates of the cylinders and their residual pressure. The economic impact of this change in practice was estimated by a cost study.: Use of Takeo™ cylinders resulted in a significant decrease in the turnover rate (69 % vs. 93 %,: A digital autonomy display increases the delivery performance of portable medicinal oxygen cylinders and generates an economic gain.
