The aim of this study was to describe and compare the succession of intertidal benthic communities in two areas at Guanabara Bay, RJ, Brazil: Urca, an area submitted to moderated organic pollution and Catalão, an extremely polluted area. Three transects in each area were scraped one month before the beginning of this study in order to evaluate the recruitment (recruitment-treatments). Three other transects were monitored without manipulation (monitoring treatments). Species composition and relative abundance were evaluated monthly between September and December, 2000. A total of 26 species was found at Urca and 13 at Catalão. The percent cover of the most abundant organisms was not similar between treatments at Urca after four months, while in Catalão, the similarity was 72% in the second month. The faster community development and recovery at the most polluted area was probably related to the existence of simple and resilient communities in more impacted areas.

AbstractStructure and diversity of sessile zoobenthic assemblages seem to be driven not only by chemical-physical constraints and biological interactions but also by substrate lithology and its surface features. Nevertheless, broadly distributed crustose epilithic corallines could mask the role of substrate on animal settling. To evaluate the direct influence of different rocky substrates, occurrence and coverage of several sessile species, growing on the dark (i.e. coralline-free) face of sublittoral limestone and granite boulders were compared in the Tavolara MPA (Mediterranean Sea). The analysis of photographic samples demonstrated significant differences in terms of species composition and coverage, according to lithology. Moreover, limestone boulders were widely bare, while the cover per cent was almost total on granite. The leading cause of observed patterns could be the different level of dissolution of the two types of rocks, due to their different mineral composition and textural characteristics. Limestone has previously been shown to have higher dissolution compared with granite, and consequently, a more unstable surface. Our results suggest that, in dark habitats, the absence of the crustose coralline layer allows more rock dissolution and consequent lower stability of the limestone compared with granite, which, in turn, reduces the zoobenthos colonization.

The coral reef environment has a strong influence on associated organisms such as fishes, mollusks, and others. Wherein, the butterflyfishes are marine fishes which closely associated with the tropic group as dietary specialization i.e. obligate coral feeder, facultative, and generalist. The obligate may respond only to change in preferred corals and not indicate others. However, generalist show in different response in habitat deteriorates and may allow switching feeding to a less preferred one. Many questions remain about food specific at the species level which may potentially as bio-indicator for coral conditions. Here, we studied the species composition among coral coverage. We explore the environmental degradation in Taka Bonerate National Park impact on food resources and fishes especially for butterflyfishes community. This study focused on family Chaetodontidae with UVC method and UPT method for coral cover. This study was carried out at Taka Bonerate National Park, South Sulawesi between May and June 2019. There were 342 individuals observed and dominated by Chaetodon kleinii, Hemitaurichthys polylepis, Heniochus chrysostomus, C. lunulatus, C. melannotus, C punctatofasciatus, and Forcipiger flavissimus. However, we found a site with diversity index and coral cover has across conditions. Whilst, these benthic communities mostly dominated by Acropora, which may be preferenced by specific species. Butterflyfishes have several types of foraging tasks and may impact in utilizing the coral reef and other social habitats used. The species composition and abundance of butterflyfishes had relations not only by coral coverage but also benthic compositions. However, factors that regulate its specific species distribution and species compositions are still under study.

Catchment areas of Icelandic rivers are mostly barren or with little vegetation cover in the highlands, but with heathland and mire vegetation in the lowlands. Chemical composition and nutrient availability in Icelandic rivers are influenced by geology, topography and vegetation cover in the river basins. This seems to determine the density and diversity of benthic invertebrates, species composition of anadromous fish and catch of salmon in Icelandic rivers. Species composition of benthic communities is determined by particulate organic matter drifting downstream from river head-waters. Filter feeding blackfly larvae dominate lake outlets, while algal grazing chironomid larvae dominate rivers not influenced by lakes. In well vegetated catchment basins, lake-fed rivers have higher catches of salmon than non-lake fed rivers. Only a few of the rivers flowing from poorly vegetated areas sustain salmon. Glacial rivers have the lowest density and diversity of benthic invertebrates of all river groups and do not sustain fish populations.

Mount Ciremai National Park has a high ecological function as a major catchment and water source areas. The objective of this research was to obtain information on floristic composition and structure in the edge forest of Seda Block, Mount Ciremai National Park. To carried out the research, the method used in the analysis vegetation was quadrat transect at an elevation of 602-614 m asl. The results showed that species composition dominated by the families of Euphorbiaceae and Moraceae, consisting of 3 stratas of heading A to C where strata A occupied by Elaeocarpus sp. (40 m) and Ficus involucrata (30 m). Ficus involucrata has the widest heading cover on the observation plot. The condition of the forest quantitative structure generally demonstrates good conditions by forming a reversed J curve, as well as a relatively moderate diversity of plant species and there are no species of plant that dominate the forest edges.

Species composition and quantitative structure of small-sized Cladocera community and their algal diet before, during and after cyanobacterial blooms were studied in highly eutrophic lake. The objective of the study was to investigate, how the mass development of toxin-producing cyanobacteria affect the abundances of small-sized Cladocera and their preferences within consumed algal cells. Cyanobacterial blooms were predominantly constituted by microcystin-producing genera Planktothrix, Dolichospermum, Microcystis. The concentration of intracellular microcystins in lake water ranged 0.0–23.61 μg dm−3. Bosmina longirostris, B. coregonii, Diaphanosoma brachyurum and Daphnia cucullata were dominant in Cladocera community. The highest abundances of B. longirostris occurred in periods without cyanobacterial blooms and B. coregonii during blooms and after them. The maximum abundances of D. cucullata were observed before and after the cyanobacterial blooms, while the abundance of D. brachyurum was the highest at the beginning of blooms. Small Bacillariophyceae, small Chlorophyceae and Cryptophyceae were the most abundant among identified algal cells detected in digestive tracts of the Cladocera dominants. Tracts of D. cucullata, B. longirostris and B. coregonii contained the highest number of Bacillariophyceae always before blooms. During cyanobacterial blooms, cells of small Chlorophyceae predominated in tracts of D. cucullata. After bloom, cells of Cryptomonas spp. were mainly consumed both by D. cucullata and by B. coregonii. Fragments of Dolichospermum spp., besides Bacillariophyceae and Cryptomonas spp. cells, were occasionally found in tracts of D. brachyurum. Our study indicated that blooms constituted by toxin-producing cyanobacteria may influence quantitative and qualitative structure of the small-sized Cladocera community.

Commercial dredging for blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) and oysters (Ostrea edulis, Crassostrea gigas) constitute the main bivalve fisheries in Denmark. These activities predominantly take place in Limfjorden, a large microtidal sound, and in the Inner Danish waters. Both areas are shallow, estuarine, receive high nutrient inputs from agriculture, and are of nature conservation interest (Natura 2000 sites), thus presenting challenges for an ecosystem approach to fisheries management. Using high-resolution fisheries data (~10 m), we investigated the effects of bivalve dredging on benthic communities at both local (Natura 2000 site) and regional (fishery-wide) scales. Regionally, our results showed that dredging intensity correlated with shifts in species composition and reduced community biomass. We were, however, unable to detect an effect of dredging on community density, trait richness, and trait composition. These metrics were significantly related to other environmental drivers, such as sediment organic content (negative) and mussel bed biomass (positive). At the local scale, the observed relationships between dredging, biomass, and species composition varied significantly. This occurred as dredging impacts were greater in areas that contained suitable reference conditions and experienced relatively low levels of disturbance. By contrast, communities which experienced high nutrient loading, regular anoxic events, and high natural variability were relatively unaffected by dredging. Our results therefore highlight the importance of spatial scales in fishing impact estimations. Furthermore, we demonstrate how targeted sampling, high-resolution fisheries data, and suitable reference areas can be used to detect fishery effects in coastal areas that are highly stressed by eutrophication.
